Language Change: Progress or Decay? (Cambridge Approaches to Linguistics), by Jean Aitchison

This is a lucid and up-to-date overview of language change. It discusses where our evidence about language change comes from, how and why changes happen, and how languages begin and end. It considers both changes which occurred long ago, and those currently in progress. It does this within the framework of one central question - is language change a symptom of progress or decay? It concludes that language is neither progressing nor decaying, but that an understanding of the factors surrounding change is essential for anyone concerned about language alteration. For this substantially revised third edition, Jean Aitchison has included two new chapters on change of meaning and grammaticalization. Sections on new methods of reconstruction and ongoing chain shifts in Britain and America have also been added as well as over 150 new references. The work remains non-technical in style and accessible to readers with no previous knowledge of linguistics.

Really Terrific -- Sticklers Should Read This
By Anne Mills
This is an illuminating survey of language change, looking at how languages change and whether or not this is the "bad thing" that so many believe it to be. It spends a lot of time looking at current examples of change (mostly in American and British English, but also in other languages) which I at least find far more interesting than the usual focus on past changes. As to why languages change, the author has no firm answers, but who does? This book helped me in my intellectual progress from a stance that says "good English is under attack" to one that says "language is a living thing". Many thanks to the author [Review by a non-professional with a strong interest in historical linguistics].

Written at a fairly simple level, but the information is useful even to experienced students
By Christopher Culver
While it's title might make the book seem a collection of papers taking sides in a debate, LANGUAGE CHANGE: Progress or Decay is a textbook written by Jean Aitchison introducing contemporary study of language change to beginning students of linguistics. The book has proven quite popular for its gentle tone and its clear summarization of important work in the field, and is now in its third edition.

This reviewer is a graduate student of historical linguistics, and I've several years of experience in the field. For all its simplicity, however, Aitchison's book was relevatory. Those with training in the Indo-European or Uralic language families tend to think of language change as some abstract sequence of events that are cleanly reconstructed with the comparitive method. Our traditional handbooks are rather divorced from contemporary research and don't consider the "why" and "how" of language change. Aitchison remedies this by considering language as a product of human beings, with all of their social pressures and insecurities. She first presents the work of William Labov, who viewed language change in progress in 20th-century new York. His work tells us about how varying standards of pronunciation in a given population spread or die depending on social prestige.

Another matter this student of historical linguistics was unclear about is exactly why sounds tend to change along the same lines in all language families. Everyone knows that final consonants tend to be lost, labiovelars stops may become /p/ or /b/, and /l/ often shifts to /w/. Aitchison explains the physical causes for these common phonetic and ultimately phonological changes. By far the most rigorous and useful chapter for me was "The Mad-Hatter's Tea Party", an admirably easy-to-grasp explanation of push chains and drag chains with plenty of examples.

As for the question in the subtitle, Aitchison ceaselessly stresses that language change is natural and unavoidable. She quotes from a long line of English-language purists, from Jonathan Swift to William Safire to show the absurdity of seeking to freeze language at a given moment. At the same time, she emphasises that languages do not evolve towards some ideal, but rather endlessly wheel about from one configuration to another.

I highly recommend this book to any student of historical linguistics. Even if you have some training in the field, you're bound to find something new and exciting in Aitchison's text.

The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, by Robert C. Scaer

Measure the neurophysiological changes associated with PTSD and whiplash!

Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this groundbreaking book describes the alterations in brain chemistry and function induced in individuals by what is known as traumatic stress or traumatization--experiencing a life-threatening event while in a state of helplessness. The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease presents evidence of the resulting and relatively permanent alteration in neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuronal organization.

This book convincingly demonstrates that these changes create lasting effects on the emotional and physical well-being of the victim--changes correlated with many of the most common, yet poorly understood, physical complaints and diseases, including whiplash, migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and other painful, difficult-to-treat conditions. Further, the causes and effects of retraumatization are explored, clarifying the reasons some patients suffer fresh trauma over relatively minor incidents while others handle major traumas more easily.

This groundbreaking volume backs up its new theory of PTSD neurophysiology with cogent theory and persuasive evidence, including:

  • case studies correlating clinical features of trauma and dissociation with compelling physiological rationales for the symptoms
  • solid documentation drawing from the medical and psychiatric literature of PTSD, whiplash, brain injury, epidemiology of trauma, and a variety of disease processes linked to trauma
  • in-depth discussions of medical traumatization of patients, including the results of pediatric procedures and ineffective anesthesia
  • demonstrations that somatization and conversion are not imagined symptoms but result from measurable autonomic physiological alteration of the affected organ
  • a well-documented exploration of the effect of prenatal and neonatal trauma on later emotional development, response to traumatic life events, and disease and mortality
This impressive empirical evidence that body, brain, and mind are a continuum offers a powerful new paradigm to medical and mental health professionals, as well as new hope to sufferers from trauma. With a foreword by Bessel van der Kolk and helpful figures, The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease is an essential resource for the in-the-trenches professionals who confront the effects of trauma and resulting somatic consequences. It will be of compelling interest and usefulness to family practice physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, speech and physical therapists, counselors and psychotherapists, and any medical or mental health professional who treats physical or emotional trauma.

Review
REMARKABLE . . . provides clinically relevant descriptions of the mind/body dysfunctions of both the central and autonomic nervous systems of traumatized patients. Even more than a comprehensive overview, the author presents an integrated neuropsychobiological model of the underlying mechanisms of trauma pathology, which he demonstrates in numerous case histories and applies to various trauma therapies. A CREATIVE, CUTTING-EDGE WORK -- Allan N. Schore, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine

About the Author
Robert C. Scaer, MD, received his BA in Psychology, and his MD degree at the University of Rochester. He is Board Certified in Neurology, and has been in practice for 36 years, twenty of those as Medical Director of Rehabilitation Services at the Mapleton Center in Boulder, CO. His primary areas of interest and expertise have been in the fields of traumatic brain injury and chronic pain, and more recently in the study of traumatic stress and its role in physical and emotional symptoms, and in diseases. He has lectured extensively on these topics, and has published several articles on posttraumatic stress disorder, the whiplash syndrome, and other somatic syndromes of traumatic stress. His books include The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, which presented a new theory of dissociation and its role in many diseases, and The Trauma Spectrum: Hidden Wounds and Human Resiliency, which addressed the broad and relatively unappreciated spectrum of cultural and societal trauma that shapes every aspect of our lives. He is currently retired from clinical medical practice, and continues to pursue a career in writing and lecturing in the field of traumatology.

An exceptional eductional and reference work from a skilled neurolgist and trauma expert
By NH Doc 4385
By way of full disclosure, I am a plastic surgeon with an interest in patients troubled by disturbed body image and an addiction to cosmetic surgery. When I first wrote about that topic in my 2009 surgery textbook, I made the case from a few of my own patient studies that childhood trauma was one of the causes of an obsession for plastic surgery and postoperative dissatisfaction, but it was Dr. Scaer's work and that of others in the trauma field (Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Pia Mellody, Pat Ogden, Bernice Andrews, and others) that has subsequently helped me piece together a stronger theory and then provide evidence for it, some of which will be published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in October. Dr. Scaer and I have subsequently traded a few emails and he has encouraged my further research

Dr. Scaer is a physician but not a psychiatrist, which gives him the distinct advantage of being able to review the relevant mental health literature from the standpoint of another specialty. A neurologist with an obvious command of neuroanatomy and physiology and all of the abnormalities that developmental and accidental trauma produce, he can write compellingly to make the case, which I believe most physicians do not appreciate, that trauma is not universally perceived. The response to trauma depends upon its meaning to the victim and his or her sense of helplessness in a perceived life-threatening situation. It's like the lion chasing the antelope--the same physiological reactions are occurring--the pupils are dilated, the muscles are pumping, the adrenaline and cortisol are high--but the meaning to the lion is lunch and to the antelope it is survival.

Dr. Scaer has drawn the same link to whiplash and other disease of traumatic stress, and leads the reader through the relevant physiology, trauma and attunement theory, and the way traumatic reactions manifest themselves in a variety of common diseases. As a hand surgeon for many years, I saw the effects of trauma--dissociation, re-experiencing, and avoidance--displayed in many injured, depressed, and angry patients suffering from what is now called "complex regional pain syndrome" and struggled to treat it. All hand surgeons knew that these patients were "difficult", but even now more of them should read Dr. Scaer's work. "Tormented" would be a more accurate term.

The third edition is significantly improved and elaborated over the second, which itself was exceptional. I have read every word of both. There are new chapters on bonding and attunement. The whole text is more "dense", literature references updated and exhaustive. Yet somehow it is still smooth reading for a relative novice to the field. That is the author's skill.

Dr. Scaer seems aware that not all allopathic physicians will subscribe to his ideas, but in my opinion they should. These patients have lifelong afflictions that they did not cause, and until some compassionate physician recognizes it, too many will be discounted as "crazy." They deserve better, and it is pioneers like Dr. Scaer who will educate all of us.

Massage therapists, PTSD survivors, chronic pain sufferers, anyone who has been abused--READ THIS
By ETG
This book is a must read for PTSD survivors and their loved ones. While it can be very technical, you will gain an understanding of what is going on in your body. Mainly, if you have ever suffered trauma, it is literally living in your body and manifesting as pain. Massage therapists have long known that some clients cry when a certain body part is massaged. This book explains cellular memory and demystifies PTSD survivors' longing for solitude and inexplicable behavior. It offers some hope with new therapies that it turns out are not quackery, discusses pharmaceuticals and psychiatry. I see it is selling out. I know many therapists have it on their shelves but we as lay people need to know what's happening to us, too. It's worth the $30 and much better and an easier read than the first one.

Great book, needs more recent references
By Paige
I throughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a great reference on the topic and I particularly liked that it had references at the end of every chapter to back up his claims. It is a theory grounded in neurobiology, animal studies, and physiology. The only complaint I have is that the book is a 2014 updated version, yet I have not found works cited after the year 1999. It doesn't actually seem to be updated with current research in my opinion, and I will be getting another book in addition to this one so I have more recent information. This book was exactly what I was looking for at the time.

Adrian Masters continues his relentless march toward the bitterly cold Northlands of Starlight. Ravaged by a deadly disease and accompanied by two children, Adrian carries Marcelle in a vegetative state, hoping Alaph, king of the Northlands, will supply
a way to reunite her near-death body with her wandering spirit.

Time is of the essence. Invading soldiers from Major Four are marching toward the Southlands village to do battle against the dragon slave masters, but two great dangers await—the inescapable disease and the unpredictable Benefile, ageless and mysterious white dragons who will kill any infected humans.

All the while, Drexel, the murderer of Marcelle’s mother, has taken on an impervious disguise as a male Starlighter and is using hypnotic powers to gain control of Mesolantrum with his sights set on the entire kingdom. Adrian and Marcelle must battle to free the slav es on one world and protect their own world from Drexel’s malevolent plan or else the freed slaves will return to Major Four only to find another slave master. Performing both tasks seems impossible.

Hope remains in the guise of the little Starlighter Regina. Guided by Cassabrie, Starlight’s great liberator, Regina hopes to accompany Adrian step by step to thwart the plans of slave masters on both worlds.

Exodus has risen!
By Jennifer Thrall
Exodus Rising was everything that I hoped it would be. I fell in love with the characters in this story. Adrian and Marcelle have grown so much since the beginning, in terms of their faith and character. Exodus Rising completes the Tales of Starlight series as well as the Dragons of starlight series. Every question is answered. This story was stirring, exciting, romantic, and powerful. I related to Adrian and Marcelle so well, because I am the same age as they are. Mr. Davis' jump from young adult fiction to Adult fiction was no jump at all. I look forward to more. A must read beautiful and compelling series.

Exodus Rising
By Alex Carter
Exodus Rising by Mr. Bryan Davis was amazing. It had me turning the pages late into the night. The characters were well developed and likable which is always very important. The story line was complex, but explained well. Action packed and exciting, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to go on a fantastic adventure and step into perils of danger. I learned a lot from Marcelle and her struggles, I enjoyed watching her learn and become comfortable and more secure in who she is.

This ending to a fantastic trilogy was great, everything tied together nicely in the end. Readers will be pleased.

Excellent Conclusion!
By Amazon Customer
This third book in the Tales of Starlight is a fulfilling conclusion to the journeys of Adrian and Marcelle. Incidentally, Bryan Davis did a masterful job in weaving this series with its companion, Dragons of Starlight. However, it is a refreshing change to be able to read an engaging series for adults which captures both the imagination of fantasy and simplicity of everyday life, yet remains clean.

Tragedy at Devils Hollow: And Other Kentucky Ghost Stories, by Michael Paul Henson

This is the first book of Kentucky ghost stories by acclaimed author Michael Paul Henson. He tells the bewildering tale of the tragedy at Devil’s Hollow in Kentucky. Henson has added a selection of other ghost stories and unexplained phenomena. The narratives contained in this volume are relatively unknown for two principal reasons—first, no one has previously taken the time to collect and compile them; second, these are stories generally limited to certain localities and have seldom been told outside the area of occurrence. While many stories may have been transmuted through the years of telling, the essence remains the same and the fascination and intrigue provoked by these tales of wonderment has not been diminished.

I love this complilation of Ghost Stories/Unexplained from around Kentucky. It really makes me want to get out and explore the areas around me now. It broke my heart to hear that Mr. Henson passed away in 96 (found out in "More Kentucky Ghosts"...another excellent read). When reading his first book I kept thinking that he lived in Kentucky with me and that I'd like to meet him someday. Now I see that won't be happening.......well maybe......you never know!

For the lover in you!
By LaBellaEsq
I've read both of the poetry books written by this author. Both are undoubtedly filled with Christian love, the kind that makes even a non believer like myself understand fully what Agape Love stands for. While you can see the author’s faith in God as her Creator and the ultimate source of love in her writings, she fortunately doesn't come across as preachy or judgmental allowing you to relate to her love and tragedies as a human. In conclusion, I recommend both books in this series, Poetry in Infancy to anyone who believes in love, is passionate about love, or even needs a reminder that true love does exist even through life’s storms.

Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastards), by Scott Lynch

In his highly acclaimed debut, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch took us on an adrenaline-fueled adventure with a band of daring thieves led by con artist extraordinaire Locke Lamora. Now Lynch brings back his outrageous hero for a caper so death-defying, nothing short of a miracle will pull it off.

After a brutal battle with the underworld that nearly destroyed him, Locke and his trusted sidekick, Jean, fled the island city of their birth and landed on the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But even at this westernmost edge of civilization, they can’t rest for long—and are soon back to what they do best: stealing from the undeserving rich and pocketing the proceeds for themselves.

This time, however, they have targeted the grandest prize of all: the Sinspire, the most exclusive and heavily guarded gambling house in the world. Its nine floors attract the wealthiest clientele—and to rise to the top, one must impress with good credit, amusing behavior…and excruciatingly impeccable play. For there is one cardinal rule, enforced by Requin, the house’s cold-blooded master: it is death to cheat at any game at the Sinspire.

Brazenly undeterred, Locke and Jean have orchestrated an elaborate plan to lie, trick, and swindle their way up the nine floors…straight to Requin’s teeming vault. Under the cloak of false identities, they meticulously make their climb—until they are closer to the spoils than ever.

But someone in Tal Verrar has uncovered the duo’s secret. Someone from their past who has every intention of making the impudent criminals pay for their sins. Now it will take every ounce of cunning to save their mercenary souls. And even that may not be enough.…

From Publishers Weekly
Like its roguish protagonists, Lynch's colorful sequel to 2006's The Lies of Locke Lamora is charming, unpredictable and fast on its feet and stands surprisingly well on its own given its convoluted plot. Initially poised to rob the Sinspire, the notoriously thief-proof casino where the penalty for cheating is death, Locke and his partner, Jean, are unwillingly sidetracked into joining and then leading a pirate crew, swindling their way across the sea as they had previously done on land. The cinematic influences on Lynch's fantasy setting are evident, the borrowing is mostly ingenious and the prose frequently enthralls, but tone and pacing suffer from odd inconsistencies. A handful of dark moments clash uncomfortably with the overall devil-may-care atmosphere. Most frustrating of all is the handling of key secondary character Ezri Delmastro, who shines too briefly as an energetic romantic interest for Jean. The ending promises at least one more installment, but fans may be unhappy if the saga strays too far from its amiable roots. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The science-fiction caper novel constitutes a small genre to begin with (Keith Laumer and Harry Harrison may be its best-known names), but Lynch added something entirely new to it with his debut, The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006). That novel, which told the story of a young boy taken under the wing of a master thief, was set on a distant planet but at a stage in the planet's history roughly equivalent to our own pirate age. Now Locke, the talented boy who became a world-class thief, returns with a caper so big it defies all reason—to penetrate the vault of the Sinspire, the most protected casino on the planet, and take its contents. If the first novel had undercurrents of Oliver Twist, this one is more in the vein of Ocean's Eleven or The Sting: fast paced, colorful, funny, with a fiendishly intricate plot containing plenty of right-angle turns. Locke and his partner, Jean, trade banter like Redford and Newman and work their light-fingered magic with charm and panache. Lynch hasn't merely imagined a far-off world, he's created it, put it all down on paper—the smells, the sounds, the people, the feel of the place. The novel is a virtuoso performance, and sf/fantasy fans will gobble it up, though they'll have to fight with caper novel aficionados for every crumb. Pitt, David

Too Many Competing Plot Lines
By Robin Snyder
I really enjoyed the first book in this series but Red Seas Under Red Skies was a bit meh for me.

Don’t get me wrong, the dialogue between Locke and Jean is still amazing and I love the utter devotion those two have for one another. But the story was a little all over the place and I think my biggest issue is probably that the flashbacks were to a time not that long ago instead of when they were growing up gentlemen bastards. So things got a little but jumbly

***“Know something? I'd lay even odds that between the people following us and the people hunting us, we've become this city's principle means of employment. Tal Verrar's entire economy is now based on messing with us.”***

And therein lies the problem. They aren’t between a rock and a hard place but A Rock, A hard place, A cliff and an erupting volcano. There are too many adversaries and sub plots and side scams and….well I think you get what I’m saying.

I found myself getting really distracted. I’d read a little bit and then I’d wonder off into another book or three before I remembered to come back to it. It took me forever to get through the section that involved learning how to fake being a pirate.

☯ The + side ☯

☞ - Locke and Jean are ever entertaining. They have a great bromance and even though they have been through some tough times they are still like brothers.

☞ - There are always strong women in this and I was happy to see that the pirates are equal opportunity employers and there were a fair share of deadly female pirates.

☞ - The world building is really wonderful with all the alchemical concoctions and such as well as the deadly and cruel games that the nobility of different lands like to play. I will never look at a chess game in quite the same way after this.

☯ The - side ☯

☛ - Took way too long to get anywhere in the story. With far too many overlapping plot lines. It was a little hard to follow who was on whose side and how they were messing with Locke and Jean.

☛ - There was no Sabatha. Look we didn’t really get to see her in the first book but I was thinking she is Locke’s long lost love and I keep thinking she is going to pop up sometime….but she didn’t. I wish I would have known that going into this book.

☛ - The ending. Well it was unexpected that things played out like they did. I will give Scott Lynch that but idk it made most of the story seem a bit pointless to me.

Overall:

The writing and dialogue is really good I just don’t think I liked the story all that much. But this is maybe a story that you like better the second time you read through it since you knew where things are going.

If nautical nonsense be somethin' you wish...
By The Mad Alchemist
I bought this book when I was less than 200 pages into The Lies of Locke Lamora. I adored it; the world, the characters, the intricacies of the cons. It was something I didn't know I was looking for until it was in my hands.

I'd regard the second book as highly if the story that was built up within the first 200 pages is the story we got. The first chapter was brilliantly written, and spurred me to shirk my adult responsibilities as I was drawn deeper into the narrative. Fans of the first book knew there was plenty of room for raising the stakes, and it seemed as though Red Seas Under Red Skies would deliver on that.

Unfortunately the main plot - as well as all the characters I'd grown to care about - were told to bugger off around 300 pages in while Locke and Jean meandered out to sea.

I'm torn. I don't hate everything about the middle section of the book, and though I wish the story had gone in another direction (primarily because there were too many plotlines and too many things that weren't followed up on or not given nearly as much development as I'd have liked), I can see why Lynch went in the direction he did.

The book's biggest problem is that you could cut around 200 pages of content and wind up with a much stronger product. All the time spent on explaining sailing and nautical terms and this and that was time I'd have rather spent reading about the intricacies of a new con, or delving deeper into Locke's backstory.

It didn't help that time skipped about however it wished. There's a particularly bad instance at the beginning of chapter eleven where the narrative jumps forward by several hours following the last chapter, but then the second scene goes right back to the end of the last chapter without warning, and it took me a minute to figure out what was happening. Confusion mixed with long passages about things I don't care about do not make for a pleasant time.

I'll say this - Lynch did a marvelous job of describing things I don't care about. He simply couldn't make it interesting in a context where it ground the main plot to a halt.

I can't help but get the feeling he felt so much pressure to up the stakes following a first novel where things went to hell in fantastic fashion that he went too far with this one and couldn't keep the plot focused as a result. It's not a bad book by any means, but the best parts largely copy the formula from the first book, and the second act lull is long and dull enough I had to flip back to earlier pages to remind myself what was going on when the plot kicked back into gear.

If you haven't read The Lies of Locke Lamora, pick it up. It's well worth your coin. If you enjoy the banter between Locke and Jean, Red Seas Under Red Skies is worth a look. The dialog is as sharp as ever, and despite my overall feelings about the tale, I love the characters more than I did going into it.

If you enjoyed Lies more for the con, the consistent pacing, the gradual escalation of the main threat, and the steady build that led to an explosive (and immensely satisfying) conclusion, you'll find some of that here, but it's not going to thrill you half as much as the first book. You could skip from chapter seven to chapter thirteen or fourteen and not miss much of importance.

Lynch is a solid writer and world builder. He has a great vision for this series, but for whatever reason things didn't quite gel in this entry. I'm going to read the third book despite seeing several middling reviews because the characters and the world are strong enough to keep me hooked despite the flaws, but I have to admit parts of Red Seas Under Red Skies were slogs nearly on par with the sections of Lord of the Rings where Tolkien was so charmed by a particular arrangement of stones or trees he had to write about them for several pages, or have characters sing for whole chapters. This isn't a book for the casual Locke Lamora/fantasy enthusiast.

Pretty good
By Heather M. Head
For me, this was a let-down after the first Locke Lamora book. Where the first captured and held my attention from the first moment, this one was slow to gain speed, and, once it did, was so full of complexities and plots within plots and characters within characters that I had a hard time staying with it. Once the main characters get on the ship and develop interesting relationships with the interesting characters there, it speeds up and becomes interesting, but it takes half the book to get there. And then, before it's over with again, the reader is forced to return to the mind-exhausting complexity of plots within plots in order to make sense of the ending.

I still give it 4 stars because I love this character and several of the secondary characters, and the good parts were worth wading through the meh parts. However, I will probably not read the third book, as I fear it is likely to be equally or even more complex, and ... I'd rather spend time with characters than plot twists.

Love it!

A few friends used this book as an itinerary in NY and they were all raving about it.
At the moment I can only dream of going to the Big Apple, so for now I use it as a cookbook (the oxtail stew is insanely yummy!).
In the meantime I make up my wish list of places I want to check in the – hopefully – near future!
