The Best $3 you'll ever spend on this subject

I bought this book as I read this author's EXCELLENT section in the Men's Health book on Cardio Strength Training (By Robert Dos Remedios - also well worth a look by the way). It was so simple, practical and concise I wanted to read more.

I bought this book 40 mins ago and have read it cover to cover. His six pillars of nutrition are simple, science-based and he avoids all the faddish nonsense that people who write 'diet' books normally aim for.

His section on organic food is very good and even includes a list the fruit/veg that are best to buy as organic (The Dirty Dozen) and the ones you don't need to waste the extra dollars on (The Clean Fifteen). Brilliant.

I've lost count of the health/nutrition/fat loss books I've read, and as far as I am concerned this is the best $3 and 40 mins you'll ever spend on a book on the subject.

Dr. Roussell has a very simple and effective method

Dr. Mike Roussell has explained his method of fat loss and healthy living very well in this short and sweet book. The 6 Pillars of Nutrition could have been explained in much more scientific detail if that was his goal, but instead Roussell speaks a language we can understand and gives information that can be put to use immediately.

As a trainer, Roussell and his methods have impacted the approach I take with my clients and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with weight loss and is ready for a better solution.

I like simplicity of the book. Its just 30 pages and yet explains nutrition very well. Suggests diet that can be easily followed and see results.

About the Author
Timothy Beatley is Chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning and Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities at the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, where he has taught for over twenty-five years.�His primary teaching and research interests are in environmental planning and policy, with special emphasis on coastal and natural hazards planning, environmental values and ethics, and biodiversity conservation. He has published extensively in these areas, including the following books: Ethical Land Use; Habitat Conservation Planning: Endangered Species and Urban Growth; Natural Hazard Mitigation; and An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management.�In recent years much of his research and writing has been focused on the subject of sustainable communities, and creative strategies by which cities and towns can reduce their ecological footprints, while at the same time becoming more livable and equitable places. His books that explore these issues include Biophilic Cities, Resilient Cities, and Green Urbanism (Island Press).

Fantastic Read! I couldn't put it down!

Even though I had to read this book for an Ecology class, it was a thrilling read. I learned a great deal from this book, and got a fantastic perspective on how the future may (and should) be if biophilic techniques and cities catch on.

I did write a ton of notes in this book, even though it's a thin book. It's packed full of information, and it's read-friendly with sections for each concept. The author also uses a lot of interesting exactly from countries all over the world that you can actually do further research in (if you're into that).

All in all, I expect to keep this book for a long time and keep up with the updates in the field of biophilic urban design. Go green!

nice book but hey it just talking about a new luxurious term of ecological design. We had the professor himself given the lecture in Virginia Tech. I tell you that this book doesn't give a real worthy knowledge as I expected. I was fooled by the fancy title.

Relying on prisoners' firsthand reports, Hornblum (urban studies, Temple Univ.) has written a thorough account of the questionable medical experimentation carried out in Philadelphia's Holmesburg Prison from the mid-1940s to 1974. Research on everything from cosmetics to chemical warfare agents was conducted there, often with minimal or no record keeping. Such research raises serious ethical issues. Throughout, Hornblum asks whether prisoners can give informed consent, particularly when the potential consequences of the research are not fully explained. Although most of the book centers on Holmesburg, Hornblum does cite other prisons across the country where similar practices took place before they received widespread condemnation in the 1970s. What is shocking about this is that it did not happen in the distant past but in our own generation, with the doctors involved still in practice. Frighteningly, Hornblum reveals that at the Nuremberg trials Nazi doctors cited American prison practices as a defense for their nefarious medical experiments in the camps. Thanks in good part to the Freedom of Information Act (and many interviews, too), Hornblum tells the story of medical experiments, ended in 1974, on prisoners in a Philadelphia prison. Most of the experiments involved the effects of chemicals on the skin (hence the title), but they also included military trials, stopped in 1966, of LSD and other mind-altering drugs. Kligman and those prison administrators who knew about the experiments always claimed that no prisoners were coerced, informed consent was required, and any prisoner could withdraw from any experiment at any time. Hornblum punches holes in each of those statements. He compares some of the experiments with those of Nazi doctors during World War II, showing how, in one case, a Nazi physician apparently saved his life by describing some of the U.S. prison experiments to the judges in the Nuremberg trials. Great read, but printing issues.

The book itself is absolutely fantastic. However, I've had problems getting one that's printed correctly. The first copy I got had pages that were so faded you couldn't read them, so I got a free replacement. The replacement was missing pages, and when I looked at the faded one (which I hadn't sent back yet) it was missing exactly the same pages. For $50 that sort of thing is not acceptable.

It is a deep look into the inside of something that many do know know about and have never thought about. It is well written, and pictures are included. I highly recommend it.

Shocking!

We are all aware of the nuclear experiments done during the cold war, right? Well insight shows from this book that many prisoners and people of lower social classes were experimental guinea pigs in the name of Modern Science. It is horrifying to read, and yet interesting at the same time. We also brought over experimental Nazi Doctors from the Holocaust to help the US Government on some experiments and were even given alias names to keep their identities and whereabouts secret. This is even happening today believe it or not, and it is horrifying to think what they have done during the Cold War, I come to think, what ... are they doing now? It's a scary thought!

Very good!

Maybe because he has always written the lyrics in the various projects in which he participated, GIllan wrote a sensitive and simple history, educately not losing much time describing the others members of Purple, but focusing mainly on the music industry, the ideas behind the records, his ideas about rock'n'roll. It's very, very good reading.

outstanding in every way

Ian Gillan has been not only one of rock's all-time greatest vocalists, also a lyricist of great talent and a true rock and roll personality for the ages. As a member of Deep Purple's key Mark II lineup, and through his various solo projects, he's been everywhere, done everything. An honest autobiography covering his life and times would make for a wild roller coaster of a read. And so it is.

So many musicians seem to know how to play their instruments, but don't know how to string a few words together on paper. Gillan's book, by contrast, is well enough written, positively brimming with his personality and great sense of humor, and stuffed with hilarious stories. It is a joy to read.

Gillan's story begins with his family, his cronies in the neighborhood, and early stabs at becoming rich and famous, initially not terribly successful in either direction. Following his major career breaks, getting into Purple and the success of the Jesus Christ Superstar recordings, he covers it all: his bumpy (to say the least) relationship with the legendary Ritchie Blackmore, life on the road, various incidents of band misbehavior, quitting the band, the various business failures which left him broke once more, and then rise back to the top of the hard rock music business (and lifestyle). He goes into management issues, the various bands and musicians, tour management, the girls on the road, you name it. Even some stories on some of the bands they toured with - like the wild days of the tour supporting the Faces - are included, every one of them hilarious. I would have liked to read a bit more on some particular issues, but as an overview, he seems to strive to cover all stages of his long career fairly evenly. At close to 300 pages, including a discography, he gives us a lot. Throughout the book the voice is unmistakably Gillan, jokester, drinking buddy, musician, emotional and touchy sparring partner. If you want to know about life on the road, all over the world, with one of the most successful touring bands of the last 25 years, this is the book to read. It is outstanding.

Fascinating look at a rock lead singer's life.

Ian Gillan's first success was in Lebanon with Episode Six in the mid-sixties. Returning home to a largely indifferent England, he then signed on with Deep Purple, which went on to become one of the best selling bands of its time.
The book tells the story of the good times as well as bad. There were successes with other bands like Gillan and Black Sabbath, and his lead role in the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. There were also tough times: money problems, internal conflicts and the recurring musical and professional conflicts with legendary Deep Purple guitar wizard Ritchie Blackmore.
The band continues on today -- with Gillan but without Blackmore, (replaced by the equally amazing Steve Morse) and the book takes us right up to present day. The writing is understated but the tales are fascinating. A must-have for any hard rock music fan.

Epiphany

When I was a small boy living in London over 25 years ago, my father used to take me to the Science Museum in South Kensington almost every Saturday to attend the afternoon lectures. One Saturday it was not a lecture that we attended but a film by a gentleman named Jacob Bronowski. I sat mesmorised by the episode of the 'Ascent of Man' that was shown that afternoon. I understood much of the science which was being discussed and already had a good grounding in the subject. But within the despcription of man's pursuit of understanding was a humanity that I had never experienced before. At the end of the film, Bronowski crouched by a pond in a concentration camp and scooped a handful of ashes from the pool of water and, fixing his steady eye on the camera, said, 'I beseech you in the bowels of Christ, consider you may be wrong'. Bronowski was quoting Cromwell, but in that brief moment was encapsulated the escence of science, humanity, art,and understanding. The Ascent of Man, in the 1970s an attempt to bring a deeper and wider understanding of science and humanity to the public, is now confined to Open University television schedules. The book remains available to all. It is a revelation. Bronowski was a giant. Read this book and you may come closer to an understanding of the world around you, but when you finally put it down, having formed an opinion,'consider you may be wrong'. As for me, I went on to study physics as a first degree and the arts as a higher degree. I share Bronowski's atheism but there is never a day that passes or an opinion I offer when I do not heed that advice and question the world around me.

Evolution of knowledge

One of my all time favorite books from college that is definitely a keeper and still relevent after all these years. If you read each chapter and view the corresponding video text it produce sa truly amazing insight into the development of mankinds knowledge. Similiar in style to "Connections" it is quite possibly more engrossing. The book is a fascinating journey , written in a style that illuminates the darkest and distant passages of time with lucidity and foresight. My personal favorite chapter(6) was The Starry Messenger which was eventually about(like knowledge Bronowski builds on the past) Galileo and his relationship with the Catholic Church as a result of his theories.I love this book and the understanding it gave me to subjects I felt less than interested in. This book has the power to make even the most abstract and esoteric theories interesting. A beautiful book that puts all the knowledge of the past into perspective in an entertaining manner that can lead a young mind into areas of interest they may never have persued. The book is also full of richly detailed photographs, full color prints and other visual aids that further explain the topic duscussed.I would recommened this book for any young student in high school or approaching college who is even remotely interested in the connections between science and the evolution of mankind. A great gift idea for that budding scientist or historian on your list.

An Outstanding and Important Book

Jacob Bronowski was a genuine Renaissance man. This, his most famous book, looks at the history of science from the perspective of Bronowski's deep, humanist philosophy. Bronowski--along with C.P. Snow--saw art and science as two aspects of the same human enterprise: that of understanding the world and expressing that world in human terms. Here Bronowski shows those connections: why Mendeleev's periodic table was part of "the greatest collective work of art" in history--that is, physics; why the Watts Towers of Los Angeles are like the molecules in a copper wire. THE ASCENT OF MAN is a symphony for which SCIENCE AND HUMAN VALUES was merely a prelude. An outstanding, and vitally important book. "I am infinitely saddened," Bronowski writes, "to find myself suddenly surrounded in the West by a terrible loss of nerve." We must not turn our backs on science--we must finally discover it. Whether you are new to emergency US or you run an emergency fellowship, this is the book for you. It was hard to imagine that the previous editions could be improved, but the authors have well and truly done it. Comprehensive, readable, with very high standards of schematics and ultrasound images, this book covers the breadth of ED US practice very well and goes into a great amount of depth in the always-popular areas of critical care and echocardiography. My copy is chained to the bookcase in our education office and there's always a queue to read it. Well done to the authors for an outstanding achievement. Cheers Justin Bowra, Sydney Australia
