Great Human Factors Book!

I've read a lot on the subject of aviation psychology and human factors during my time as a student in aviation, and this book is among the best of what's available. Written by two active experts in the field of aviation psychology, the book provides an in-depth look at the subject, including summations of much of the significant research that has been done in the field.

For a student in the field on aviation, whether you're a pilot, a controller, or even just an interested researcher, I would highly recommend this book.

I used this book for a semester-long research assignment at my college. As an aviation student in the past, this has been by far the most informative and well-written book relating to aviation. I can appreciate the author's extensive knowledge on how different human factors effect our reflexes as pilots, especially the psychological factors with gender differences. Overall, excellent quality... would recommend reading and using for reference.

About the Author
Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (1903-1993) was one of the twentieth centurys leading and most influential Talmudic scholars, Jewish philosophers, and religious leaders. A descendant of the Lithuanian Soloveitchik rabbinic dynasty, The Rav, as he was widely known, served as Rosh Yeshiva of the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary at Yeshiva University, where he ordained nearly 2,000 rabbis over the course of almost half a century. Rabbi Soloveitchik advocated excellence in both Torah learning and Western, secular scholarship, as well as involvement in the broader community.

This book is a splendid addition both for people seeking an extensive commentary to their siddur (prayer book) and those who want to know more about the thinking of the famous and esteemed Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. Rabbi Soloveitchik (1903-1993), the scion of a famous highly respected family, was the Rosh Yeshiva (Dean) of Yeshiva University, which ordained more than a thousand Orthodox rabbis, and was the spiritual leader of the Rabbinical Council of America, the organization of Orthodox rabbis. Many Orthodox rabbis considered him to be their spiritual leader and even today, about a decade after his death, many rabbis continue to quote him and follow his practices.

Needless to say, people being people, not all Orthodox Jews agree with Rabbi Soloveitchik's world view. Rabbi Soloveitchik was somewhat mystical in his approach to Judaism and to life generally. He insisted that the views of the mystic other-worldly Nachmanides are correct and used them in interpreting the Bible, Midrashim, and the siddur. He rejected the views of the rational Moses Maimonides (in Maimonides' introduction to Perek Helek) when he interpreted the Torah. He insisted that Torah events as well as their Midrashic interpretations happened as described, literally, and should not be understood figuratively, no matter how fanciful they may appear. Jacob, for example, actually fought with an angel, and this was not a dream as Maimonides posits. He also insisted that Jews must obey all of the ancient commands, both biblical and rabbinical without any deviation or change because of modern situations and human needs. Thus, he insisted that Jews may not change the agunah law that only a husband may give a divorce decree, which results in hundreds of wives being unable to remarry because their husbands, although separated from them and sometimes even remarried, refuse to give their wives a Jewish divorce. One famous critique of his method is contained in Rabbi Dr. David Hartman's recent book From Defender to Critic, where Hartman describes why he rejects the Soloveitchik approach.

But whether one agrees with Rabbi Soloveitchik or not, readers of this extensive siddur and commentary will find much that will provoke them to think more about prayers, Judaism, laws, customs, and life generally.

This siddur contains, among many other things, an introductory essay by Rabbi Soloveitchik's son in law, Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein who quotes his father in law saying: "Prayer means sacrifice, unrestricted offering of the whole self, the returning to God of body and soul, everything one possesses and cherishes.... God the Almighty sometimes wills man to place himself, like Isaac of old, on the altar, to light the fire and to be consumed as a burnt offering." Rabbi Jonathan Sacks prepared the English translation for this and other Koren siddurs. He describes Rabbi Soloveitchik and his thinking in sixteen pages. Julius Berman, the Chairman of the OU Press Commission, Dr. Arnold Lustiger, the editor of this volume, Menachem Dov Genach, the General Editor of OU Press, and Matthew Miller, the Publisher of Koren Press, also add essays about and insights to Rabbi Soloveitchik.

Rabbi Soloveitchik had his own customs concerning the prayer service and this volume offers twenty-eight pages describing many of them. For example, while most siddurs have the opening words of the kaddish as yitgadal v'yitkadash, he pronounced them yitgadeil v'yitkadeish.

The following are a few examples of his commentary: Commenting upon the Shema, "Listen, Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is One," Rabbi Soloveitchik writes: "The commandment of reading the Shema involves both the act of reciting a series of words as well as maintaining the proper intention, namely, the acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven when reciting them."

Discussing the Amidah, the first formal prayer composed millennia ago, he asks how can man approach God "and list his petty, insignificant needs? Would he dare act in this way before a king of flesh and blood?" He replies that the only reason we can do so is because of "the precedent of our forefathers ... (who) established the very institution of prayer."

Why does a prayer state "Blessed is the Lord from His place"? Isn't God everywhere? This teaches that God is not transcendent; He is present everywhere and at all times. "We live and experience God in His full immediacy." (Some may see the words "from his place" indicating a specific locality and that the words do not suggest everywhere.)

There is no command for Jews to go to Jerusalem on the Shabbat, as there is for the festivals: "On Shabbat Shekhinah (God's presence) knocks on the door. All we have to do is let Her (sic) in." (Some might see this comment, stating a need to go to Jerusalem during holidays to experience God, as contradicting the previous commentary that states that God is present at all times and everywhere.)

The siddur concludes with a transliteration of the mourner's kaddish. This placement makes it easy for mourners who have difficulty reading Hebrew to find the kaddish and read it. Just prior to this Kaddish, there are over a hundred pages that explain the significance of the synagogue, many prayers, customs, rules, and special activities and prayers associated with certain days. In sum, this siddur is comprehensive, a veritable high-level course on Judaism and Jewish prayer as it was understood by one of its great leaders.

It also has all of the weaknesses (thin paper that does not withstand moisture (as from a slight wetting of the fingers which I find necessary to permit page turning), no BeHaB selichot, no translation of the Hoshanot circuits and too much space devoted to the counting of the Omer). I commented on the other siddur on December 10, 2010.

Respectfully, the publisher made a significant, regrettable, editorial decision not to include references to Rav Soloveitchik's tfillah practices in the prayer portion of the siddur. This despite the inclusion in the very long introductory section of descriptions of how the Rav's prayer practices differed from conventional Nusach Ashkenaz practices. For example, in Birkat HaShachar, the Rav did not say "shelo asani goy" (he said "shelo asani nacri") and he did not recite the koach blessing. And when saying the Shema alone, he did not say "Kl Mlch neman" (because doing so is an interruption between the blessings and the Shema), and he did not say "ki shem..." prior to his Mincha Amidah because the phrase is not found anywhere in the Gemara. These are interesting differences that enliven the prayer service. And surely one can hang onto the Rav's tsitsis without worrying about rebelling against accepted practices. What's more, one can adopt many of the Rav's practices without breaking continuity with a minyan.

As it stands, one must write notes about the Rav's practice in the margins of the prayer portion of the siddur - hardly what one expects in this siddur. Inclusion of these notations in the siddur as printed need not be intrusive, as demonstrated at the end of the Shacharit Amidah, when there is a brief comment about the Rav's preference to defer Hallel until after the Full Kaddish on Yom Ha'Atzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim. Other methods are available as well.

I encourage the publisher to modify future editions of the siddur to correct the current approach.

About the Author

Nancy Reyner has been a technical consultant and professional instructor for Golden Artist Colors, Inc. for the past 8 years, teaching artists techniques and tricks with acrylic paints. Nancy has had numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally. While living in New York City she created costumes and sets for Broadway and off-Broadway theater and film (including a Madonna film), coordinated public arts programs for New York State, and directed and performed with the Ragabash Puppet Theater. Nancy was selected for a two-year painting and drawing residency for the City of Phoenix, and is now a Santa Fe, NM resident, where she has lived for the past 15 years.

At last! The book on acrylics I've dreamed of finding!

As a watercolor painter for 20 years and now trying to learn to paint with acrylics, I'd read every book I could find but they often contradicted each other or had out of date information or demonstrated really ugly painting. This book is THE acrylic bible, written by a master artist and teacher. It's full of helpful tips and specific detailed information about how to achieve any technique that can be done with oil or watercolor in acrylic, along with things that you can only do with acrylics.

My goal is to be able to use acrylics more like oils and this book explains how it's done. Each technique includes "recipes" for how much of what mediums or additives to use to achieve the goals. The sample art work is superb and the writing is better and more clear than any art how to book I've read (and I have a huge library of them). I just can't say enough about how happy I am with this book and how much I appreciate the author's generous sharing of detailed, specific information.

Handbook for the Curious Acrylic Painter

This is the type of book that you can open at will and be immediately interested in the page that you see. I particularly like the one page format per project, the clear list of materials, the use of pictures for process as well as finished product. Definitely recommend it for acrylic painters who are interested in experimentation, or in just finding out details on how to a specific method. For instance, my purpose in buying this book was to get a better understanding of the difference among the many gels and medium products on the market. I learned so much more than that!

This book has some lovely finished pictures, and is full of ideas to add depth and texture to your paintings. There are techniques in here that have proven useful in taking a project to that finished stage. I did purchase a few items specifically to do a project related to one in this book and I was very satisfied with the results. A great reference for beginners and advanced alike.

The History of the U.S. Invasion of Iraq, 2003

A description of the U.S. invasion of Iraq might start with 9/11, Bush's Administration, the 1991 war, or Iraq's invasion of Iran. The history of the invasion, however, is not a description of the invasion itself but of what happened before. Robinson, Gallagher, and Denny provide that history.

"Africa and the Victorians" describes the UK's responses to fear of erosion of the British Empire. In the mid-1800s, British leaders assumed that modernization of the world economy would naturally strengthen the empire. Events of the late 1800s didn't work out that way. Rather, political developments outside Europe took a nationalist turn. In addition, the expanding world roles of Russia, Germany, and the U.S. threatened to cost the UK its global preponderance, unless the UK could count on all its traditional assets, especially India.

India was securely in British control internally, but the routes of British access to India ran through the Mediterranean, Egypt and, after 1869, the Suez Canal, or alternatively around South Africa. Nationalist politics in both Egypt and South Africa seemed, to British imperialist eyes, to make both routes less secure. In addition, both Germany and Russia were chipping away at Turkey and thus approaching the Suez Canal.

Thus, in 1882 Britain sent its armies to take over Egypt and safeguard the Canal. Many in London wanted to do this on the cheap by quickly withdrawing and then ruling through Egyptian elites, but the old India hands had their way and the UK undertook direct rule and military occupation.

Although it technically falls in Asia and thus outside the book's African focus, the story continued a few years later on the other side of Suez, with the fall of Turkey and Britain's annexation of the lands that lay on Russia's path to the Canal. Both in South Africa and Suez, Britain entrusted territorial defense to colonists -- Britons in the Cape Colony and Israelis east of Suez.

British troops stayed in Egypt until 1954, at which point the Egyptian politics of 1882 replayed themselves almost exactly. Britain and Israel, along with France, invaded again in 1956 to reoccupy the Canal, but by then the shift in world power already feared in the late 1880s had come to pass, and the invaders were ordered out of Egypt by the U.S. and the USSR. By that time, the U.S. had assumed the UK's role as guarantor of Turkey, Israel, and Suez.

The invasion of 2003 repeats this pattern in terms of taking a supposed overseas interest, perceiving an indirect threat to it, invading to overthrow a nationalist government, and then staying supposedly to develop the country but more practically because the invader looks down on the local political alternatives. The U.S. invaders don't seem shy about potentially repeating Britain's experience of a 72-year-long military presence.

Access to India was, of course, no longer an issue even in 1956, but once started these things take on lives of their own.

In their last pages, Robinson, Gallagher, and Denny make this observation: "Fundamentally, the official calculations of policy behind imperial expansion in Africa were inspired by a hardening of arteries and a hardening of hearts. Over and over again, they show an obsession with security, a fixation on safeguarding the routes to the East. What stands out in that policy is its pessimism. It reflects a traumatic reaction from the hopes of mid-century; a resignation to a bleaker present; a defeatist gloss on the old texts of expansion." This also describes U.S. policy toward the world as of 2003, compared to the Marshall Plan days fifty years earlier.

Note that this book has apparently been published under two subtitles: "The Climax of Imperialism in the Dark Continent" (U.S.) and "The Official Mind of Imperialism" (UK).

a landmark study of British imperial expansion

Many readers of AFRICA AND THE VICTORIANS have tended to view the book as little more than a textbook-like chronology of the British scramble for Africa. But the true significance of the book is to expand the highly influential theory of British expansion that the authors originally articulated in "The Imperialism of Free Trade," an article which first appeared in the Economic History Review in 1953.

The main argument of the book holds that British expansion in Africa occurred when crises on the periphery led the British government to intervene in defense of Britain's economic and strategic interests. Robinson and Gallagher argue that official thinking during the period of expansion after 1870 represents an essential continuity with the earlier mid-Victorian era, which was characterized by a belief in the benefits of free trade, and by a conviction that British informal influence would secure these economic benefits at the lowest possible cost for the British government. British leaders throughout the nineteenth century thus held the conviction that the government was responsible to intervene in imperial matters only when it was necessary to safeguard the empire of free trade.

Expansion in Africa therefore presents a paradox: it remained the continent of least importance to British trade. For Robinson and Gallagher, the answer lies in the prominence accorded to India by British ministers, who rightfully recognized the subcontinent as the linchpin of the Empire. India attracted one-fifth of British trade and overseas investment. It provided for a self-financing Army. It held the key to power in the East.

According to this interpretation, the imperial "scramble for Africa" after 1882 occurred not as a result of British ministers pursuing economic or commercial interests on the continent, but rather to defend Britain's strategic routes to India from local revolts and from increasing European rivalry. The British occupation of Egypt in 1882 became the decisive event in the imperial revolution in Africa, because it disrupted the European balance of power and set off a scramble. In Egypt and the Nile Valley, the British responded to Mediterranean instability and local revolts by occupying the territories crucial to the protection of the Suez Canal. In southern Africa, the British responded to the growing political preeminence of the gold-rich Transvaal republic by first attempting to cut it off from foreign support, and eventually by pushing the Dutch republic to the brink of war over the issue of British imperial influence on the Cape sea route to India. According to Robinson and Gallagher, there exists little evidence for public demand for empire in Britain, and even less evidence for a direct economic link between British ministers and colonial economic interests. In each of these instances, British motivations for imperial expansion in Africa traced to strategic interests, centered on India and its trade, in response to crises on the "periphery."

The main weakness of this otherwise magnificent account lies in its reliance on "the official mind" - the statements recorded by British ministers in official documents. This methodological approach supports Robinson and Gallagher's attempt to create a unified theory of British imperialism, but it assumes that the rationale articulated by British ministers in official documents necessarily corresponded with the true motives for expansion -- a shortcoming that later books, especially Cain and Hopkins's BRITISH IMPERIALISM, have made more obvious.

In its time (1961), the book was a valuable corrective to the commonly held view of empire, which assumed that British expansion was driven by the search for markets (an influence mainly of J.A. Hobson and Marxist theory). AFRICA AND THE VICTORIANS' emphasis on the "periphery" also anticipated the growing influence of "area studies" and post-colonial scholarship, both of which, in different ways, emphasize the "agency" and importance of the non-Western world in shaping imperial outcomes.

Nearly fifty years later, this book is still considered one of the most important contributions to British imperial history ever written.

About the Author
Stephen Jenner has 25 years experience in finance and programme management roles in the public sector including as a member of the Senior Civil Service since 1999. From 2005-08 he headed the CJS IT portfolio, a £2bn investment in modernising justice. The approach adopted won the 2007 Civil Service Financial Management award and has been recognised internationally in reports to the European Commission, the OECD and in a short case study by Gartner. More recently he has participated in the development of Portfolio Management as part of the Cabinet Office's ICT strategy and he co-ordinates the cross-government Project Portfolio Management Special Interest Group as well as playing a leading role in the development of OGC guidance in this area.
