Basics Marketing 02 - Online Marketing by Brian Sheehan

This is one of the new (2010) marketing books from Ava Academia's celebrated "Basics" series.

Is it quality?

Ava books themselves are testament to best practice in terms of production, design and sheer inspiration. It is a pleasure to read these books and I usually spend a considerable amount of time admiring them - to me they are a measure of perfection in the industry - a truly beautiful product.

Is it just pretty pictures?

This does not mean this book is style over substance. In this particular edition, Online Marketing author, Brian Sheehan has distilled an ever growing and possibly overwhelming subject to the core and current essentials while still providing depth in its assessment of the various case studies. I am a fan of Sheehan's style - succinct and erudite which is further enhanced by the 2 column format in the page layout.

Things that stand out for me:

* The main case studies are topical and ground breaking examples e.g. Barack Obama campaign, Bing vs. Google, Burger King (hilarious examples) etc.
* Often case studies focus on just the success stories and not the bloopers - Sheehan provides excellent examples of both, the most memorable being the Mars Fling campaign.
* There are remarkable (in the memorable sense of the word) comments from industry leaders and pioneers - excellent for client presentations.
* The Running Glossary provides industry jargon in bit-size chunks that are useful for non-webby clients.
* The Discussion Questions, Exercises and Suggested Reading are clearly focused towards Ava's target audience but are still interesting drills in the working world for engaging in concept development when you have similar client scenarios.
* The Suggested Further Reading examples are a quick cheat to more in-depth knowledge without having to search, read and rate reviews yourself.
* The final chapter makes reference to ethical issues in the industry (which Ava is championing) through the example of the Geppetto agency/ Almar Sales case study. This was a very enlightening chapter but I felt that it was more about Geppetto's core philosophy than the case study, which to me was more interesting in terms of the ethical problems it resolved. However, although it hinted of being subjective it was not a serious bias as it merely illustrated that "ethical" agencies can and do exist.
* I believe reading should not be boring and this is a very enjoyable and an enlightening read. I will continue to use this book in my business.

Why would I recommend this book?

* Its chapters cover the core areas - the digital media revolution, search marketing, e-commerce and e-branding, advertising on the web, the social web, online applications and mobile marketing, measurement and analytics, as well as ethical approaches.
* I like my developers to be familiar with online marketing as it is now a critical feature of web development and this books allows them to get up to speed even if they have not formally trained in this area and have little or no experience of marketing campaigns.
* This book would also be very useful for interns and would provide a quick training platform.
* Sheehan's book helped me as a director/owner get up to speed with recent trends (click fraud, "cyber Monday", spinlets etc) while I have had my head down in non-web related projects and as well as pointing to future developments that I can now keep track of.
* There are useful statistics and scenarios to illustrate pertinent developments in this field to clients who are sceptical about online marketing campaigns.
* An excellent guide to start generating your own campaigns based on the advice and pointers that Sheehan has demonstrated.

Is it value for money?

Yes! This book is definitely worth your pennies.

What next?

Considering the utility and versatility of this book I am certainly looking at the other options in the Ava catalogue and I have already bought Design Management - Managing Design Strategy, Process and Implementation. On my wish list - Basics Advertising 01 - Copywriting.

Professor Butler's academic research has been profiled in the New York Times, Time, and Money magazines, and on the CNN and CNBC websites. He has a PhD in finance and also holds an MBA in finance from the College of Business, an MS in computer science from the College of Engineering, and a BA in psychology from the Honors College, all from Michigan State University.

Great, apart from the additional reading recomendations

A very thorough and interesting read. Butler is an excellent writer, and the text has very few grammatical and spelling errors. Explanations are clear, sources are typically given for further reference, and examples are almost always provided, and are very thorough as well. This book gives an introductory and then some to almost every area of multinational finance and investing. Be aware, this is not a book on international management practice, it is very much a book about currency conversion, hedging, international portfolios, etc. Although international corporate governance is touched upon, I would recommend something else if you want to learn about that area.

Why I gave it four stars: the additional readings. A textbook, especially an introductory one, is supposed to be a gateway to learn more about the topic. It is my pet peeve when authors include dozens of journals to read instead of books. The reason being is that it is mostly students reading these books. Students, if anyone isn't aware, are usually poor. They don't have money to be buying journal after journal. Give us something we can check out at our library, or at least find for a reasonable price at the bookstore. Recommending journals isn't helping anyone. There are some books recommended, but not many.

Other than that, I highly recommend professors adopting this textbook for an international finance class!

Stuart E. Prall's "The Bloodless Revolution" is an extensive and non-biased study of the seminal constitutional developments in 17th century England; which defined the constitutional monarchy in Britain in the age when absolutism reigned supreme elsewhere in the world. Author prepares the scene for the revolution by explaining relationship between king and the Parliament throughout Stuart dynasty starting from James I, thought Long Parliament, Civil War, Protectorate, Restoration, last years of Charles II, and the many encroachment on liberties and mistakes of James II which ultimately led to Glorious Revolution.
Emphasis is on developments in the legal system and relationship between multiple religious institutions and political parties during and after the Restoration period.

"The medieval and Tudor view of the dispensing power was premised on the distinction between malum prohibitum (a prohibited evil) and malum per se (an evil in itself). The distinction was essentially medieval, and the foundation was divine law and/or natural law. Restrictions considered man-made (malum prohibitum) could be dispensed with. Restrictions that were thought to have been authored by God or Nature (malum per se) were not to be dispensed with. These distinctions permeated both the secular and the ecclesiastical structures of the medieval worlds. The Tudor era, especially after the English Reformation, saw the gradual secularization of the political and legal thought and the gradual erosion of the distinction , because the whole conception of divine and natural law was one of the victims of the new age of science and its concomitant mechanical laws of nature, which were coming to the fore in the seventeenth century. One result of the pre-1640 struggle for sovereignty and the constitutional struggle of the Puritan Revolution itself has bee the triumph of the principle that sovereign power was identical with the lawmaking, or legislative, power. Neither the Long Parliament or Protectorate felt any divine or natural limitation upon their ultimate freedom to exercise total legislative authority. The lesson of the Restoration had been that the supreme or sovereign legislative authority did exist in the English state, and that it existed in the triple-headed institution of the King-in-Parliament. The problem was very complex. Because if the king-in-Parliament can make or unmake any and all laws, then there is no longer any practical distinction between the malum prohibitum and malum per se. All laws are merely malum prohibitum. The state is supreme, not God or Nature. The result is that the king could now feel free, at least in theory, to dispense with any law, while those who might oppose his particular use of this power ... would be thrown back upon the old medieval distinction between the human and the divine. English constitutional development was to be unique in seventeen-century Europe in that these same intellectual tendencies on the Continent were indeed leading to just this justification for royal absolutism, while in England the struggle for power between the king and Parliament would continue unabated ..."

This is a stupendous book. It reveals the Glorious Revolution in its entirety. From the Restoration to the Act of Settlement, nothing is overlooked. In addition, the book is written without any of the historical or idealogical predispositions which have long plagued previous studies of this seminal revolution.

The book explores the relation between the working of democratisation, by examining the role of ethnic identity and nationalism; increasingly cheaper and diversified means of media production, challenging state monopolies of the media; the reality of personalised and globalised media; and the challenging of the connection between a free media and democracy by global capitalism and corporate control of the media. The book argues that the dominant forces transforming Indonesia today did not arise from the singular point of Suharto’s resignation, but from a set of factors which are independent from, but linked to, Indonesia’s internal politics and which shape its cultural industries.

Md. Ziaul Haq is a senior software engineer, Full Stack JavaScript developer, frontend architect, speaker, and certified scrum master from Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is a passionate programmer who loves to work on web technologies, mobile application development, and new technologies in general. JavaScript is his current technology stack of choice, in which he is working with Angular, NodeJS, ES2015, ReactJS, VueJS, npm, and socket.io. He has also worked on LAMP technologies since an early stage in his career. Ziaul currently works with the Upwork platform development team as a JavaScript developer. He started his career in 2006 as a software developer and, in his 10-year-long journey, he has worked at different companies in various tech roles. Knowing our EQ help us to be a better parent, a better partner and be able to have better relationships in general.

This book was designed to be complimentary material for the EQ Profile that is designed by the Learning in Action Technologies [...].

Since I have assessed and provided a debrief of many EQ profiles for my coaching clients, I found that this book was valuable to develop the areas that my clients have wanted to work on.

For leadership coaches who don't have extensive EQ knowledge, I would highly recommend that you take an EQ profile assessment and use this book to develop your own EQ. It will make you a better coach and enable you to use this book to help your clients.

The ratings they use are derogatory. I cannot tell my clients they are "unfit" and expect to motivate them to improve. Also, their sampling for their research does not seem to be broad based and validated. There are far better instruments and books on the market than this.

Although I put the practice away for many years, it became a part of my life again after a healing crisis. (One can only shut down their gifts for so long before it becomes a problem :).). I read cards for people both professionally and privately and can say that I was quite advanced at one point.

Unicorns have always meant something intensely special to me, like the light and the magic and the beauty and wonderment that EVERY person deserves to experience in their lives. Opening these cards, looking at them, touching them...touched a very sacred, very personal, and very vulnerable place in me. In some ways, this space was all but forgotten. They spoke to the magical little girl within who knew innocence, and adventure...and awe. They returned to me the sense of wide eyed excitement and enthusiasm with which children eagerly pursue each day. All of this within the space of a few moments.

The artwork is truly breathtaking, the gilded edges a real treat. I felt like I was holding something very special in my hands. What I came to realize was that I was holding something that speaks to very deep place in my heart. (Perhaps they were speaking to that little girl who always secretly hoped that she would see a unicorn during a camping trip or other outdoor escapade).

The messages of the cards are very simple and I believe that is the entire point. We "grown-ups" like to overthink and complicate just about everything and the simplicity of this deck does not really allow for that. The interesting part of this is that, by virtue of its lack of complication, it allows for much more advanced, deep readings for others as well as the self. Why? Because this deck invites you to trust...and to trust your intuition. It has the potential to be that powerful. I believe that one does not even require the book to give accurate readings or insights for self or others. The book is simply a starting point. I want to encourage you to allow your intuition to lead you with these.

I am grateful to have read the reviews that helped me to make my decision to purchase these cards and wholeheartedly endorse every five star review. If you feel like the magic within you has been crowded out by the pressures of everyday living, if you feel like you have lost touch with something very special to you and can't seem to put your finger on it...do yourself a favor and buy these cards. They will be positive for you, positive for your kids, and positive for anyone else in your life who needs a lift.

I have had these cards, not even a week. But I am loving them. Now some reading this will think it's fluff and crap and others will get it.

The art work on these cards is stunning it's a collection of unicorn paintings and such. Some of them I even owned as a child so it was a nice flashback to those days. The messages are simple and clear.

I will be honest and say I haven't used the guide book much as I use my intuition more and than anything in my readings. I have found the readings to work well for others and I have done at least a dozen readings for others, and I worked with the energy of these cards and what they have to offer. The have felt to be true, and I have received some feedback on those readings and most of them were on point.

The cards are larger than Tarot cards and what I call the standard Doreen size/oracle size meaning they are the same size as all of Doreen's other cards, and other Oracle cards I have owned.

I had put off buying these cards for a year and I am not sure why but I am very happy that I did. I feel that they are going to a heavily used deck in my collection when I do readings for myself and others. I also like that gilded sides. Only thing I would note for others is my cards were stuck together with the gilding it wasn't hard to pull them apart just be careful as you don't want to damage your cards.

As with all of Doreen's cards and work this is very much in the light deck, and this isn't why it's a love and just a like. As I do wish that it had some in the dark in the deck as I personally feel that is missing.

there are also water and exercise cards as well and a mix of others. They are good and if you truly listen you will understand why you pulled them. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
