Computational Fourier Optics: A MATLAB Tutorial (SPIE Tutorial Texts Vol. TT89), by David G. Voelz

Computational Fourier Optics is a text that shows the reader in a tutorial form how to implement Fourier optical theory and analytic methods on the computer. A primary objective is to give students of Fourier optics the capability of programming their own basic wave optic beam propagations and imaging simulations. The book will also be of interest to professional engineers and physicists learning Fourier optics simulation techniques-either as a self-study text or a text for a short course. For more advanced study, the latter chapters and appendices provide methods and examples for modeling beams and pupil functions with more complicated structure, aberrations, and partial coherence.

For a student in a course on Fourier optics, this book is a concise, accessible, and practical companion to any of several excellent textbooks on Fourier optical theory.

Very finely written!
By deskswirl
I think the goto for Fourier Optics is Goodman' s text. I am not saying that this book supersedes that book but I think this makes an excellent companion. There is something to be said for being able to "see" diffraction results. Something that is much hard to "see" from the purely analytic results found from working problems in Goodman's book. Voelz has done an excellent job in helping the student of Fourier Optics see what a diffraction pattern looks like from the comfort of a desk chair! Very good job sir.

Best Packaging in 5 min or less.
By Jennifer Becton Cronenberg
This book takes all the stress out of figuring out how to put unique and traditional packages together and lets you focus on what interest you the most instead of fidling with technical details. Its easy to read, and has nice large illustrations. I have found it really easy to trace these illos in adobe illustrator instead of starting from scratch. It is thick and comprehensive. There are so many examples it is hard to find one that isn't in the book.

Make a package for anything
By wiredweird
This incredible reference shows hundred of patterns for boxes, cartons, tubes, displays, etc. I don't mean "four sides and a bottom", though you have plenty of those. I mean things with internal dividers, things the hold together by themselves, decorative, utilitarian, and the entire range.

This book has an industrial orientation, as if you're planning a die-cut paper product. It also assumes that you're a fairly skilled designer. Although the patterns are given in full detail, you'll have to make lots of adjustments. That includes sizes, cardboard thicknesses, customization, and proportions. That last can be tricky, because so many of the measurements interlock with with each other, and Roth hasn't given any indication of what the dependencies are. Some of the more complex pieces also appear to assmble in non-obvious ways, which you'll have to work out for yourself.

Still, many of these patterns are well within the reach of a home crafter, and offer some exciting possibilities for gift boxes and other kinds of containers or stands. The patterns aren't the kind you can cut out directly from the book, but can be scanned and scaled, or just act as a conceptual inspiration.

Whether you're a commercial designer or a paper-crafting hobbyist, this is a unique and incredibly rich resource. Even if it doesn't solve your design problems directly, it shows hundreds of techniques that can be adapted to your own solutions.

Good material, bad presentation
By A. Gomes
The information is a great database for packaging design, but, it comes in a very thin paper. As you use, handle it, you'll feel as if your book is melting in your hands. And you'll miss a CD-ROM with the patterns, in a vetorial format. I have no idea why they didn't provide that.

Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future, 1940–1990From Brand: Getty Research Institute

From 1940 to 1990, Los Angeles rapidly evolved into one of the most populous and influential industrial, economic, and creative capitals in the world. During this era, the region was transformed into a laboratory for cutting-edge architecture. Overdrive: L. A. Constructs the Future, 1940–1990 examines these experiments and their impact on modern design, reframes the perceptions of Los Angeles’s dynamic built environment, and amplifies the exploration of the city’s vibrant architectural legacy.

The drawings, models, and images highlighted in the Overdrive exhibition and catalogue reveal the complex and often underappreciated facets of Los Angeles and illustrate how the metropolis became an internationally recognized destination with a unique design vocabulary, canonical landmarks, and a coveted lifestyle. This investigation builds upon the groundbreaking work of generations of historians, theorists, curators, critics, and activists who have researched and expounded upon the development of Los Angeles. In this volume, thought-provoking essays shed more light on the exhibition’s narratives, including Los Angeles’s physical landscape, the rise of modernism, the region’s influential residential architecture, its buildings for commerce and transportation, and architects’ pioneering uses of bold forms, advanced materials, and new technologies.

Los Angeles’s ability to facilitate change, experiment, recalibrate, and forge ahead is one of its greatest strengths. Future generations are destined to harness the region’s enviable resources to create new layers of architectural innovations.

The related exhibition will be held at the J. Paul Getty Museum from April 9 to July 21, 2013.

The land of sitcom suburbs
By Robin
I found this chunky book a fascinating and comprehensive look back over several decades which helped form the city as it is known today. Based on an exhibition at the Getty Center (where the book's two editors work) the title is in two parts: fifteen essays followed by a plates section of seventy-two pages with one image to a page.

The strength of the book are the illustrated essays and I was surprised at how detailed the coverage was and a really nice touch was not making them too long. For example, Eric Avila's essay on freeways says it all in twelve pages or Sandy Isenstadt, who covers, in fifteen pages, LA at night in her 'Incandescent city' essay with an emphasis on neon.

Any historical look at the city must cover architecture but as the book's remit doesn't go back further than 1940 the great architectural pioneers who were drawn to the West Coast are not included (Thomas Hines's 9780847833207 is the definitive volume about them) but there is coverage of the Case Study Houses, commercial buildings and two excellent essays by Becky Nicolaides and Dana Cuff looking at the massive increase in suburbs during the forties, fifties and sixties. Becky Nicolaides calls them' sitcom suburbs' followed in the eighties and nineties by edge cities and corporate suburbs, all of them totally car dependent. Avila, in his Freeway essay, makes the interesting point that it was the streetcar, in the early decades of the last century, that really created the sprawl of the city by extending tracks for miles into the countryside which allowed developers to have a their new developments connected to downtown.

It's hard to think of anything about the making of modern LA that isn't included in these pages. For example LAX gets twenty pages, consumer entertainment and shopping in the San Gabriel Valley: ten, preserving modern structures in the city: seven. The seventy-three images in the Plates section don't really follow the themes in the book but are a selection of architectural photos and renderings from the Overdrive exhibition at the Getty Center. The final pages have a very thorough index.

Overall I found the book an excellent look back of why Los Angeles looks (and feels) like it does.

Extensive Examination of the Emergence of Los Angeles
By Leon Czikowsky
This book provides an extensive look at the economic and social development of Los Angeles. It thoroughly presents this from numerous perspectives including the changes in architectural styles. This should be of interest to readers wishing to learn more about Los Angeles history.

The following are notes from the book that may be of interest to City Planning students:

Los Angeles, unlike European cities, does not have a town hall and religious buildings forming its center. It is a spread out city using much vehicle traffic. It is a city focused on mobility.. Reyner Banham observes that billboards, parking spaces, gas stations, etc. are an important part of Los Angeles’s fabric.

Philip Ethington notes downtown Los Angeles was a center hub in 1915 reaching out to Pomona, Ventura, and Santa Anna. Many real estate developers added new neighborhoods that took away the idea of a central hub. This growth was fueled by the rising importance of the aircraft industries and movies.

William Deveral observes Los Angeles planned poorly for open spaces and parks. Business leaders ignored such plans. Support for parks emerged which successfully influenced creating, in 1978, the Santa Monica Mountains Natural Recreation Act. in 2000, a $2 billion statewide bond issues was approved by voters for preserving and improving beaches, the coast, and parks.

Eric Avion noes there are seven freeways built through East Los Angeles neighborhoods and none in Beverly HIlls, whose residents are more economically and politically influential. While some argued against the environmental impacts of freeway, others such as writer Joan Didion saw freeways as allowing women to escape suburban drudgery

Los Angeles rose from being viewed as a city of drab architecture to one with many examples of notable modern architecture. Architectural influences are found from Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere.

Aviation helped Los Angeles grow by making it more accessible. The Los Angeles International Airport opened its first jet-age airpot in 1961.

The Final Revelation: The Sun Project, by RJ Teles

In this new and controversial book, The Final Revelation; The Sun Project a group of former military and intelligence analysts break the code of silence and share their knowledge of what could be the most closely guarded secret in the history of mankind. And while some people may dismiss these claims, the evidence is growing every day that intelligent extraterrestrial life exists based on almost daily feedback from the fleet of space probes NASA has scattered throughout the solar system. In fact, NASA estimates there are conservatively 14 billion earth-like planets within our Milky Way galaxy alone.

The questions regarding UFOs, UFOs and the US Government, alien abductions, and the truth about the Roswell incident, as well as secrets concerning Extraterrestrials on Earth, their relationship with the church, and ET involvement in the origins and destiny of humankind are addressed here. These highly regarded sources address some of the most popular topics concerning the UFO phenomenon including recently discovered Roswell Base Logs and Reports, what is real and what is not regarding some of the most infamous UFO Reports like the Hudson Valley sightings and the flying triangles as well as classified reports concerning UFO Abduction Cases such as Betty and Barney Hill and Travis Walton, the Apollo 13 mystery, the government sponsored archaeological Search for Extraterrestrial Artifacts (SETA) and the secret SETI missions assigned to every space probe, the government's weapon's initiatives for Managing an ET Threat including the Inspiration for the HAARP Project, the Church's Long-Standing Involvement in the UFO Phenomena and association with the notorious Men in Black, secret programs for achieving Global Dominance using the ET Advantage, and Evidence of ET Involvement in Human Evolution & the Ecosystem.

For UFO believers and skeptics alike, the information presented will challenge the reader's sense of reality and change the way in which one views the world. Everything we have been taught tells us this is not possible. Even true believers will question their convictions and struggle to accept the reality presented here. And, admittedly some of this information raises more questions than it answers. But, as we are learning more about the Universe the real question has become, "Why not?"

The people who shared their experience were quite sure no one would believe it. But, after they observed a UFO conference, said, "The truth has become indistinguishable from the fantasy. So, we've decided it was time to tell our side of the story." Regardless, after reading this story, believe it or not, you will never view a sunset in the same way.

Review
I have known RJ for almost five years and we have worked together on numerous UFO investigations. I am pleased to say that I have not met a person with a more impeccable character. His research has always been diligent and comprehensive. As a researcher myself, I can attest to the difficulty of conducting research in regards to the UFO Phenomenon. Original sources are scarce, and finding witnesses in the government or private sector willing to disclose their actual experience is even more difficult. In this book, RJ has obtained both. His decision to use a narrative format to present this factual information has created an action intensive story that will keep the reader engaged from start to finish. This is not a dry academic dissertation; rather it is a page turner that will finally shed light on the true story of the UFO phenomenon as told by those that worked behind the curtains. I cannot underestimate how invaluable this book will be to the UFO community in bringing the truth of what is happening in our skies to light.

Great New Information
By UFO Researcher
I think there are secrets here that neither the government nor some "ufologists" want us to know. I found this book to be quite interesting because of the new UFO/ET information I've not seen anywhere else, especially in regards to Roswell, the US Government's secret programs and the involvement of the church with the Men in Black. The ET-human connection is definitely a shocker. At the same time, it also strikes a controversial chord in regards to the revelations concerning some of the most infamous UFO incidents and the Betty/Barney Hill and Travis Walton abduction stories. The arguments in support of the information presented are quite compelling. And, if all this is correct, the ending can be very disturbing to those blissfully unaware of our ET connection and its potential impact on our future. Quick and easy read.

GREAT BOOK!
By Dave H
This was a great book to read!! I preordered looking forward to reading this book. And wow...it really does take you out of reality at points. I found myself taking the red pill just to see how far down the rabbit hole it goes with UFOs and extraterrestrials. The story was nicely wrapped together in a fun, easy to read package though at times I had to slow down to digest all the info. Highly recommend it!

If you want to quench your UFO thirst....!
By Heynow03
I enjoyed this. It was interesting. Nothing exactly new. A decent attempt at packaging several readily available essays into a quick read (3 hours, maybe?).
If you enjoy watching the UFO files (or whatever these shows are called), this will give you a little lift, much the same as listening to a recording artists "lost tapes" (that are the same "un-produced" recordings that were released as the finished product earlier)

O'Ryan... delightfully campy name! (Not a spoiler..)

If you dig UFOLOGY, Chariots of The Gods, and Coast To Coast AM, DEFINETLY read it! This will entertain you and give you a little more fuel to occupy your thoughts during insomnia.

I would be interested to hear/read/know what Whitley Strieber's critique would be!

EDIT: A justification for the 3 stars... only the literary flow, and the word "SEPERATE(ly)" always capitalized? Otherwise a great read

Film: A Very Short Introduction, by Michael Wood

Film is arguably the dominant art form of the twentieth century. In this Very Short Introduction, Michael Wood offers a wealth of insight into the nature of film, considering its role and impact on society as well as its future in the digital age. As Wood notes, film is many things, but it has become above all a means of telling stories through images and sounds. The stories are often quite false, frankly and beautifully fantastic, and they are sometimes insistently said to be true. Indeed, many condemn movies as an instrument of illusion, an emphatic way of seeing what is not there. And others celebrate the reverse: that film brings us closest to the world as it actually is. "Photography is truth," a character says in a film by Jean-Luc Godard. "And cinema is the truth twenty-four times per second." But they are stories in either case, and there are very few films, Wood observes, even in avant-garde art, that don't imply or quietly slip into narrative.

Review
This is an excellent short guide that manages to cram in a vast amount of information into a very small space. It never pretends to offer a history of film but is a superb resource for getting students to think about film as a medium, and to think about what makes film distinct as a means of conveying information, emotion, ideas at the same time as generating wonder, admiration, controversy, or ire. An unrivalled introduction to thinking about film as a medium. / Matthew Woodcock, University of East Anglia

A very technical introduction.
By JCCAM
I have read a number of these "A Very Short Introduction" books, and this is the worst of them.
Too technical and heavy duty. Written by an academic, who can't write for a broad range of readers.
A book by a mainstream knowledgeable film reviewer maybe more useful.

Betrayals: The Cainsville Series, by Kelley Armstrong

The exciting fourth novel in bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's "impossible-to-put-down" Cainsville series.

When Olivia's life exploded--after she found out she was not the adopted child of a privileged Chicago family but of a notorious pair of convicted serial killers--she found a refuge in the secluded but oddly welcoming town of Cainsville, Illinois. Working with Gabriel Walsh, a fiendishly successful criminal lawyer with links to the town, she discovered the truth about her parents' crimes in an investigation that also revealed the darker forces at work in the place that had offered her a haven. As if that wasn't enough, she also found out that she, Gabriel and her biker boyfriend Ricky were not caught in an ordinary sort of love triangle, but were hereditary actors in an ancient drama in which the elders of Cainsville and the mysterious Huntsmen who opposed them had a huge stake.
Now someone is killing street kids in the city, and the police have tied Ricky to the crimes. Setting out with Gabriel's help to clear Ricky's name, Olivia once again finds her own life at risk. Soon the three are tangled in a web of betrayals that threatens their uneasy equilibrium and is pushing them toward a hard choice: either they fulfill their destinies by trusting each other and staying true to their real bonds, or they succumb to the extraordinary forces trying to win an eternal war by tearing them apart.

Review
Praise for Kelley Armstrong's Cainsville series:

"Impossible-to-put-down. . . . Bring on the next Cainsville volume, please." —Sarah Weinman

"[Kelley Armstrong's] dispatches from this village filled with sinister secrets are going to be keeping her readers up well into the night." —Linwood Barclay

“Kelley Armstrong has paranormal elements in her classic mysteries but there are no ghouls, ghosts, werewolves or fairies and that’s why readers who loathe crossovers will love this series. [Deceptions is] smart, cleverly plotted and really well written and you don’t have to ignore the vampires to get to the good stuff.” —Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail

“Sometimes big, bad things really do come in small packages and no one is more adept at unwrapping them than she, making Deceptions a paranormal tale beautifully written and told.” —Providence Journal

“I am not a fan of mysteries that cross over into other genres, and I don’t like books that begin with infant narrators. So when I tell you that, despite that, Omens kept me reading on, you can bet it’s a good book. . . . A clever whodunit with some very nice twists and the fantasy actually works.” —Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail

“Armstrong creates heroines who are smart and strong, but with real weaknesses and vulnerabilities. They may be wrapped up in the supernatural, but they are realistic and relatable.” —Joanne Kelly, Winnipeg Free Press

“One of the best new series debuts this year! With its compelling characters and completely original set-up, Omens delivers a powerful combination of suspenseful thrills and supernatural chills. I can’t wait to read more!” —Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Touch & Go

“Like the creepy, spooky town of Cainsville, Kelley Armstrong’s Omens lured me in. I was busy, way too busy for this book, which, through a series of surprises and sleights of hand, had me conspiring for ways to get back to the gripping story, the colorfully bizarre cast of characters, and the clever, strong, smart heroine at its center. Don’t pick this book up if you have anything else to do. It will grab you by the collar and won’t let you up for air until it’s good and ready. And once you’re done, you won’t soon forget it.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of In the Blood

Worth every second of lost sleep
By Michelle
From the second that Betrayals was delivered to my Kindle, I knew I had to settle in for a long night. As a longtime fan of Armstrong's, I was so excited to finally have this installment in my hands. Little teasers through her facebook page, and the preorder freebies (if you're not her fan on facebook, go sign up for her page now) only made the wait worse.

I was awake until 5 am, and can promise that it was well worth the lost sleep.

Betrayals finds our beloved trio still embroiled in the tug of war between the Cwn Annwn and Tylweth Teg. Since Deceptions, Olivia (Matilda) has been trying to avoid her fate and the impending choice that she must make between Ricky and Gabriel (Arawn and Gwynn). Betrayals picks up with Olivia in a place of avoidance; in trying to avoid her choice, she's also trying to avoid her relationship with Gabriel. However, when Ricky is accused of murdering a young woman that none of them knows, she has no choice but to refresh her connection with Gabriel, and thank god for that.

In Betrayals you will find murder, new myths, a little romance, sex, and humans (and fae) who make mistakes. You will also find Armstrong's characters growing and becoming stronger. Gabriel, in particular, was a highlight of Betrayals for me. He's one of my most-dear characters, and I thought this installment gave him tremendous opportunity for growth and character development as he does a lot of introspection and comes to some vital realizations.

Olivia, as per usual, holds her own. Her relationships with Ricky and Gabriel both progress in their own ways (which will lead some readers to rejoice and some to be furious) moving the story forward and setting us up for some amazing choices and action in the final book.

As Rose has noted before, Ricky is transforming from a lesser tarot card into the king that he was meant to be. Betrayals sees him taking more of an assertive role in discovering his own backstory and connections to the Cwn Annwn. Like Gabriel, he must also do some introspection and ultimately makes a choice that will directly shape the trio's future- and the future of the Cwn Annwn and Tylweth Teg.

I am already counting down the days until the final installment will be delivered. I knew that Armstrong would give us a fantastic story, and I was not disappointed. If you haven't started reading yet, get your copy so you can laugh, sigh, scream, and rejoice with the rest of us as we get ready for this awesome series to come to an end.

and simultaneously terrified that I would hate it. I mean
By Amazon Customer
I was both really excited to finally read this next installment of the Cainsville series, and simultaneously terrified that I would hate it. I mean, Armstrong's writing is always stellar, but this book had the clear potential to be infuriating. Love triangle! Fate! Reincarnation! All the stuff I hate.

In a froth of trepidation, I stayed up till 2 pm on release date to finish, and--and--it was so worth it. It could have gone so wrong, but it didn't. It was amazing. I thought after #3 that this book would be bogged down in more love triangle nonsense: Ricky is awesome and Gabriel does everything wrong even though he means well and Olivia misunderstands everything. And of course, with a title like this one, who wouldn't think of Gabriel and his unfortunate track record? Clearly he's going to prove that he's willing to risk his life for Olivia, and I was afraid it would be belabored and maudlin and awful. Nope. It flashes by almost unnoticed as he deals with one risk after another in a nightmare sequence, with classic Gabriel competence and endearing refusal to give in to emotion.

Similarly, I've never been fond of Ricky. He's too charming. It's unnatural, even without the added dislike that comes from watching Gabriel get misunderstood fifty thousand times. But this book redeems him. This book made me feel that, while nothing is going to stop me for rooting for the other team, I could at least understand what Olivia sees in him.

In general I felt that this book was great for character development. They all grew so much between the first book and this one. And there were some really lovely moments (and a couple of really painful ones). The plot was kinda weak--though I have to admit, a lot of the Cainsville plots strike me as kinda silly. This was not really a thriller mystery. But the character development, and interactions between the three main characters, were so strong that I didn't even care.

It was wonderful, and I'll read it again many times I'm sure. Can't wait for the next one!

Cainsville Part 3
By P Chez
This continuation of the saga furthers the story and cements the triangle between the three friends. This is not a standalone novel. You'll want to read the first books in order. In a way, this series of books is one great mystery published as a serial which gives the author plenty of time to make us care for each character.
I have no idea how the plot will end. This alone justifies three stars. Betrayals is perhaps the weakest novel in the series. There is a lot of explanation in the writing. The protagonist explains every detail of the plot to us so that we don't miss a beat. This isn't always a bad thing because the motives need explanation. It's all a bit far fetched and the writing doesn't let me get as lost in the story as I'd like.

I love Cainsville and its characters. I like the premise of the fae, the huntsman and his hounds, the mystery of how the love triangle may be resolved without dire tragedy. I certainly won't miss the next book, the conclusion of the story.

Great book - easy and understandable examples
By Corry Macfarlane
This book was exactly what I needed. I have plenty of programming experience but TCL is new to me. This chapters in this book walked through a series of examples that gave me all the information I needed to get the job done. Downloading the code examples from the web site helped to make it even easier.

I don't consider this book as a reference guide but instead a great primer on the TCL language. That's exactly what I was looking for and that's what I got.

Very Disappointed
By Timothy Denton
This book is poorly organized. In the discussion of Tcl, important terms are not defined or explained. Different data types and structures like strings, lists and arrays are given entire chapters, but it is not explained why they are different and when they should be used. The truly difficult topics like substitutions and grouping are not clearly explained. This would be horrible for an absolute beginner.
The reviewer who liked the discussion of Tk may have a point. The section on Tk seems to make more sense and may be of some use.
