While most modern mysteries set in Alaska concentrate on the damage done to the ecology or the strange personalities who take refuge in this arctic vastness, Sue Henry's books are more straightforward and usually more fun. In such stories as Deadfall and the Anthony Award-winning Murder on the Iditarod Trail, Henry follows in the sled and snowshoe tracks of writers like Jack London and Robert W. Service, who realized that Alaska was the last great frontier of adventure. Her characters, like champion sled-dog racer Jessie Arnold, are welcome throwbacks to a simpler period when physical challenge was a healthy way to measure self-esteem.

Jessie is testing herself in the thousand-mile Yukon Quest race, which follows the old mail trail from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, when one of the other racers is kidnapped and held for ransom. The kidnappers insist that only Jessie can deliver the money, and it has to be on the most dangerous leg of the race. Any attempt to involve the police will result in the victim's death. Of course, the worst blizzard of the year blows up just as the race gets to that point, and it goes without saying that Jessie risks herself and her beloved dog team to recover the victim and capture the bad guys. Early in the race, novice musher Debbie Todd is captured and held for $200,000 ransom. The kidnappers demand that Debbie's frantic stepfather give Jessie the money for delivery during the race, warning them both that Debbie will die if they inform the police. But Jessie secretly notifies her good friend, Inspector Charles Delafosse, before she tackles the race's most demanding leg. In a climactic finish, Jessie almost loses her life when she confronts the criminals on American Summit during a blinding blizzard. Throughout this turmoil, Jessie is also trying to sort out her feelings for her lover, State Trooper Alex Jensen, who's at his father's funeral in Idaho. Henry decorates her novel with glorious evocations of Alaska, believable characters, interesting mushing lore and deft explanations of dogsledding mechanics. But the story suffers from a thin plot that leans on obvious clues and unlikely coincidences. Go to the dogs, sled style with a mystery

Another good sled dog racing tale by ann author who knows her region and makes the background real. If you are a long distance race fan, you won't be able to find many slip-ups in her description of the race from a musher's point of view. The mystery is absorbing and kept me guessing although I am a bigger sled dog than mystery fan. The characters have depth and realism, no stereotypes, and the subtle romance works well.

Another winner from Sue Henry!

I discovered Sue Henry only a few months ago and devoured all her books in a short period of time. I read them in almost one sitting.
Ms. Henry's books concentrate on Alaskan history and an environment few of us can imagine, fabulous characters, and page-turning mystery and excitement. I find that I'm torn between Evelyn Wood-ing it to find out what happens and re-reading passages again and again because of the flow of the words and the descriptive phrases and language.
Jessie Arnold is taking her team on the Yukon Quest this year, instead of the familiar Iditarod. The Yukon Quest is run shortly before the Iditarod and she's decided to try the race from Canada into Fairbanks, Alaska. It's earlier in the year, the trail is rougher and the conditions harsher, but she's eagerly up to the challenge.
Racing, or involved behind-the-scenes, are several friends and acquaintances, legends and loners. It's exciting when you realize that this race, like the Iditarod, honors people who forged this area for the rest of us. A wonderful mix of history and current events, the race gets going and a novice racer is kidnapped and Jessie is singled out by the kidnappers to be the go-between.
Plus, Jessie's got her own personal problems to sort out. Gee, as if running the race for the first time weren't enough to deal with!
I love this book and was truly sorry to get to the end of it. July 5th can't come fast enough for me - that's when Ms. Henry's next book comes out.

Leaves You Wanting More

Ms. Henry is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Beginning with Murder On The Iditarod Trail, her tales of life and death in Alaska have never failed to impress me. In this story, Jessie Arnold is once again testing herself and her dogs on a long and difficult race, the Yukon Quest. The courage and stamina needed for such an endeavor is brought vividly to life by Sue Henry. The mystery, although a good one, is almost secondary to the wonderful descriptions of the snow covered wilds of Alaska. It leaves you wanting more.

On Christmas morning, Nora Winters is found shot to death in her bedroom. The previous evening, she had been talking about how she might take her own life, and since she was shot at very close range, her family initially assumes that she committed suicide. However, the police quickly discover that the gun that killed her is fifteen feet away from where her body was found. With most suicide victims, the gun is found either in their hand or very close to their body, and certainly, if the victim places the gun to the right side of their head, the gun should not end up fifteen feet to the left of their body.
The police are completely baffled by the case because it has all the elements of a classic locked-room murder mystery. The only door to the room has a deadbolt and two sliding steel bolts that are fully engaged; the two windows are securely locked from the inside of the room; and after an extensive and thorough investigation, no hidden panels in the floor, walls, or ceiling can be found. Sure, Nora Winters might have let her killer into her bedroom, but how did he leave? And the gun…the very puzzling position of the gun. Why had it been left behind two books at the far end of the room? What was the point? Since even a cursory examination of Nora Winters’ body showed that she had been shot at close range, why hadn’t the murderer left the gun near her body? If this person had taken the time to think about it, he could have placed the gun in a position where the medical examiner would have ruled her death a suicide. Or maybe the official ruling would have been that it was either a suicide or a murder, but given the fact that the room could not have been left without unbolting the door or unlocking one of the windows, everyone would have signed off on the death as a suicide.
Why would a murderer go to the trouble of mysteriously exiting a room and yet leave a very telltale sign that he had been there? The two things—the placement of the gun and the locked room—don’t go together. If one is going to perform a Houdini-like stunt, then one might as well take advantage of what that stunt offers and leave the gun close to the victim’s body. Why bring attention to oneself when it isn't necessary? Why even leave the gun behind unless you were going to place it next to the victim’s body?
Detective Nick Slater is an experienced investigator who will leave no stone unturned in his search for the killer. He has five suspects—the four children of Nora Winters and Chad Winters, her husband. Gradually, Nick begins to zero in on Chad since he had a strong motive to kill his wife, and of all the suspects, he has the weakest alibi.
Eventually, after the discovery of a key piece of evidence by Nick, Chad is arrested and brought to trial. But what happens after that will prove far more shocking than anything that has gone before...

Good book to read!

I love to read it’s my favorite pastime. I’m an avid fan of murder mystery stories and I quite enjoyed reading this book. The storyline is great, I love the twist I didn’t expect that. All in all this is a good book to read, I really love it. I loved it so much I’ve finished reading it in less than a day.

This was a really brilliant and creative plot line. I was thoroughly entertained, intrigued and engaged the whole read!!! I have read other books by this author and find his work to be most enjoyable. Highly recommend this book. What a great murder mystery and I love a great who done it story! Bravo!

About the Author

Galit Shmueli, PhD, is Distinguished Professor at National Tsing Hua University’s Institute of Service Science. She has designed and instructed data mining courses since 2004 at University of Maryland, Statistics.com, Indian School of Business, and National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Professor Shmueli is known for her research and teaching in business analytics, with a focus on statistical and data mining methods in information systems and healthcare. She has authored over 70 publications including books.

Peter C. Bruce is President and Founder of the Institute for Statistics Education at Statistics.com. He has written multiple journal articles and is the developer of Resampling Stats software. He is the author of Introductory Statistics and Analytics: A Resampling Perspective (Wiley) and co-author of Practical Statistics for Data Scientists: 50 Essential Concepts (O'Reilly)

Inbal Yahav, PhD, is Professor at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Bar-Ilan University, Israel. She teaches courses in social network analysis, advanced research methods, and software quality assurance. Dr. Yahav received her PhD in Operations Research and Data Mining from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Nitin R. Patel, PhD, is Chairman and cofounder of Cytel, Inc., based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Dr. Patel has also served as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the Computer Society of India and was a professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, for 15 years.

In his straightforward approach to analysis, Professor Mets begins his discussions of three better-known airpower thinkers of the 1920s—Giulio Douhet, Hugh Trenchard, and Billy Mitchell—with a close examination of their personal backgrounds. He pays particular attention to their professional education and operational flying experience. Mets then lays out the salient elements of each thinker's aerial theories, again paying particular attention to the views of each on the relationship of air warfare to warfare in general, its potential for independent decisiveness, target priorities, the air arm's suitability for organizational independence, command arrangements, and air superiority. With those bodies of theory laid out for easy summation and comparison, Dave then does the same thing for John Warden. His subsequent comparison of the four individuals—three whose context was the dawn of military aviation and one whose context included precision munitions and space surveillance—is revealing. Although Warden's professional education and direct operational experience far outshine those of his predecessors, his core theories reflect as much continuity with their ideas as they reflect differences and accommodations to contemporary technology. These relationships are obscured sometimes by terminology differences, however, and it is one of Professor Mets' more important contributions that he cuts through them to show where Warden draws more from his predecessors than is obvious at first.

Don’t work alone. Create a low-friction environment for rapid feedback loops with other programmers.

Keep the "bus factor" high. (Bus factor = the number of people that would have to get hit by a bus before your project is completely doomed)

Practice humility, respect, and trust. Almost every social conflict can ultimately be traced back to a lack of one or all of these behaviors:
Humility: You’re not the center of the universe. You’re neither omniscient nor infallible. You’re open to self-improvement.
Respect: You genuinely care about the people with whom you work. You treat them as human beings, and appreciate their abilities and accomplishments.
Trust: You believe others are competent and will do the right thing; you’re okay with letting them drive when appropriate.

SET THE STAGE FOR SUCCESS

Build a strong team culture. Base that culture on humility, trust, and respect— and consensus-based decision making.

Write a mission statement. It's just as important to agree on what you're NOT doing as what you are.

Run efficient meetings:

Only invite people who absolutely need to be there.

Have an agenda and distribute it early.

End the meeting early if possible.

Keep the meeting on track.

Try to schedule the meeting near other interrupt points in your day.

Build strong processes and tools around team communication. They're just as important as your software tools.

Never underestimate the bandwidth (and power) of a face-to-face conversation. It trumps all forms of electronic communication.

BE A TRUE LEADER

Remove roadblocks for the team. Strive to be a "servant leader."

Be a leader, not a manager. Managers worry about *how* to get things done, while Leaders worry about *what* things get done, and trust their team to figure out how to do it.

Provide direction and intrinsic motivation. Figure out how much guidance the people on your team need to stay on track—and happy.

MANAGE PROBLEMS WITHOUT DRAMA

• Reject behaviors, not people.
• Guard your team's attention and focus.
• Ignore trolls and stick to facts.
• Don't sacrifice long-term culture for short-term convenience.

MANAGE UP & OUT

Ask for forgiveness, not permission.

If you can't take the path, make the path.

Connect to the right people. Take advantage of the favor economy.

Cut to the chase. Make requests using "3 bullets and a call to action" method.
Example:

• There is a pony deficiency.
• Lack of ponies makes people sad.
• Ponies increase productivity.

Please get us a pony.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR USERS

When marketing your product, under-promise and over-deliver. Be aware of how people perceive your software; it determines whether they’ll even try it out.

Make your software easy to use. If your software isn’t easy to try, fast, friendly, and accessible, users will eventually walk away.

Listen to your customers. Users want to be heard and acknowledged. Proactive engagement with long-term users has a positive effect on the evolution of your software, and on retaining your customers.

Great advice, not easy to apply outside of Silicon Valley

Strengths: Geek "mentality" (hide my code until it's perfect) is summed up well, the team experience and culture are explained throughout with useful metaphors.

Weaknesses: Much advice is based on utopic premises, i.e., oriented towards large open source projects or Google (where candidates with dysfunctional team culture are theoretically weeded out during job interviews). It would be good if there was more realistic advice that applies to the 99% other software companies, e.g., where customers are government, military, etc. and companies are small businesses operating outside of silicon valley without the biggest talent pool.

Enjoyable book that is worth a read

The book was quite an enjoyable read. The mere fact that I finished reading it was a good sign. The book kept me enthralled with its rich anecdotes even though they can be applied to pretty much industry. I really enjoyed the section about dealing with poisonous coworkers as this seems to be a common problem in companies. I also enjoyed learning about the HRT principle and how it can ensure a healthy culture within a software development team.

I would recommend this book to pretty much any one but more so to software developers. It's a good refresher on how to deal with common problems within software teams and how to participate in or lead a solid, lean software development team.

The books had some great points but I often thought that most of the advice and anecdotes were based on common sense. This is why I gave it four stars.

Quick read for creating a cohesive software development team

I found this book enjoyable and appropriate for helping me understand how to improve my "social graces" in my development team environment.

There are a lot of common sense things contained in here, however, because of the personality types that gravitate towards IT/software it sometimes feels like we live in a different world and normal rules don't apply. It commonly feels like if we wait long enough, since most of us are non-confrontational, our social infractions will fix themselves or go away. That's rarely true and can eventually lead to unsatisfying work (and who wants that?) and burnt bridges.

Being a person that loves my career cocoon I've created in development, I found the section that urges the reader to break out towards leadership - a swift kick in the pants. It might take more planning, but I see value in their argument, "Your career is in your hands".

These tips help getting along in any walk of life. I am just glad they came from the perspective of seasoned software pros whom I can empathize with.

Heartwarming, lovely short story

"Wedding Favors" (sequel to "Perfect Day") packs so much emotion, masterfully balanced with tender moments and the occasional bit of humor. What i loved best is how Wyatt's turmoil is soothed and kept in perspective by Graham's love and steadfastness, and, in the very last scene, how past, present, and future are expressed in simple, loving gestures.

Perfection!

I love this book and this series! It's a sweet little novella that is, well, perfection. It's like Mr.Lanyon too a full sized novel and ripped out the unnecessary stuff (fluff, angst, and the annoying sidekicks) leaving/gifting his readers with pure gold.

I really enjoyed watching Wyatt "ruin" the wedding

This is a Josh Lanyon novella/short story. For me, that's enough said but since not everyone has his work as an immediate "1-click", I'll expand my review a wee bit. Now, normally when I come across a story, no matter how short or long, is based on a bride or groom's cold feet, it's not overly appealing to me. I know that "cold feet" is a real thing that every bride or groom deal with and for that reason I find it a bit cliche. Now, having said that, this is a bit different. Yes, Wyatt is having cold feet but in his mind I think it has more to do with his inner fear that Graham is doing the wedding thing simply to please him combined with his paranoia that there will be three people in the marriage because he can't completely let go of the idea that Graham isn't over his deceased lover Jase. I really enjoyed watching Wyatt "ruin" the wedding, work it out in his brain and heart, and then have to "fix" everything-and all under 10000 words. If you liked Perfect Day, you'll love Wedding Favors and if you haven't read it yet, now is a perfect time to check it out.
