This book is the deepest most comprehensive and heady analysis of designer engagements and experiences I have found. It lacks a step by step process (which is understandable and would be the only thing that could make this book better, if developing a universal process is even possible). This book covers media theory and interface design in practical and conceptual ways. Full of references to people who have written scientific papers on interaction, experience, media, usability. intrface design, art, emotion, cognitive science, you name it - this book is about constructing realities and understanding how they are perceived. It may have intended to focus on virtual worlds but I found it applicable to sociaty and communication as a whole. Not necessarily an easy read, but for people who are fans of Marshall Mcluhan, Edward Tufte, and Jacob Nielsen this is heady enough for you. The bibliography alone is a treasure trove of media design information.

Great Novel!

This is a great novel about an african-american who is growing up at the time where slavery has been abolished but discrimination is still very real and very openly practiced. Now, I had bought this novel for my English class as we analyzed the author's writing and there are quite a lot of interesting thing the writer does to depict the main character's personality and motives. The novel, like many other novels out there, takes a few chapters to spark an interest. Albeit, I must add that the ending is slightly disappointing and rather slow. To be honest, I did not finish the final part of this book for that reason (I spark noted it so I have a general idea of how it ends). I must also add that this is by far not a children's book, or for a preteen (My opinion and suggestion only). This is more for the young adult or adult as there are several instances of sexual content throughout the first two parts of the book. In fact, I would say that the main conflict in this novel is brought on by the protagonist's untamed sexual desires. In addition, there are several cases of violence, ranging from an assault with a knife meant to assert dominance, to gruesome murder. This is a great novel and I highly recommend it.

Still Relevant in 2016

This book transcends time...set in the 1930s and I'm reading it in 2016 and seeing the same similarities to this very day. Bigger Thomas, a poor black boy, a native son..........takes a job as a chaffeur for Mr. Dalton who so happens to own the real estate company his Mom works her fingers to the bone to pay. They pay 8.00 a month in rent for a dilapidated apartment not fit for anyone to live in. Bigger goes through life wanting more...wanting something but being denied everything because he was black. Only when he took the job did he open his eyes and see just how poor they really were and how much better white people were living than them. His first night on his job he accidentally kills Mr. Dalton's only daughter and heiress to the Dalton fortune.........and tried and cover it up by burning her in the furnace. We take the journey with Bigger from that crime on to another crime and subsequently his stint in jail while he is awaiting his trial. Here in prison, Bigger gains insight on his life and his reasons for doing the things he has done. His lawyer Max, a Communist, shows him that all white people are not the same. This book is very thought provoking if nothing else. Reading Mr. Wright's explanation for why he wrote this novel at the end gave me more insight. I think this is a must read!

The Truth That Hurts

Native Son is truly an eye-opener to the extreme effects of racism in the early 1900’s. Although slavery ended long before this book was written, racism did not. Even nowadays, many people believe that along with slavery, discrimination and prejudice ended along with it. Richard Wright’s novel uncovers the truth behind the life of a black person in 1930 Chicago.
All throughout the novel, the word “blind” is used several times. Mrs. Dalton is literally blind, but almost everyone is figuratively blind. They are so caught up in their own daily struggles that they are blind to the rest of the world around them. When Bigger is eating breakfast with his family the day after he kills Mary, he ponders on the thought that “…a lot of people were like Mrs. Dalton, blind…” (Wright 107). He first notices the blindness in his little brother, Buddy, but quickly sees it in his mother and sister as well. None of these people are actually blind, but blind to the world around them. They all lived in a cycle, and nothing but the cycle mattered to them. This blindness comes into play again when Mary says that she wants to know how black people live. She thinks that black people “…must live like we live. They’re human.” (Wright 70). Mary is so blind to the fact that black people live in a hellhole while she lives in a mansion. She cannot put herself in the shoes of black people since she has never even seen it.
Native Son also emphasizes the idea that generalization of a race leads to terrible consequences. The white race in the book generalized black people as being apes and non-human creatures. The black race on the other hand thought of the white people as being arrogant, filthy rich, and prejudiced jerks. Neither of these was correct at all. A white man that contradicts this prejudice is Boris Max, and a black man that contradicts his prejudice is Bigger. Bigger is not a terrifying ape; he is a man that killed on accident and experienced hardships because of disgusting white people. Generalizations are rarely correct, and Richard Wright proves that in his book.
This novel truly gives an insider’s view on what racism actually is. Racism is not only about lynchings and violent murders. It is about prejudice and how it destroys a society. Native Son could not be a more perfect example of racism and its effects.

Great book for medical epidemiology!

I bought this book because I had no training in statistics and was feeling frustrated by having to memorize meaningless things for exams. I mean, that the short term memorization of sensitivity/specificity, prevalence, odds rations, these kinds of things was hard for me and then I would forget what they meant immediately after the exam.

That is not the best way to learn medical stats. So, in despair I looked for a good book to actually learn what is behind the short-hand notation I had been learning. This book actually teaches what it all means! The author is also pretty friendly and funny and I found that his humor was really helpful for absorbing the points he was making. He took the basic information and expanded it, so that now I really do understand the different studies and how to interpret their results. Well, I am no expert but at least I have a decent working knowledge of what is behind a research article. Good book, and it explains things very well.

I've used this book numerous times while I was pursuing my Doctorate degree. It is very concise and helpful for evaluating medical literature and clinical studies. There are many great examples of poor studies of which you should be critical.

Very Beneficial Book!

I purchased this book for my Literature Evaluation course in grad school and it has proved to be extremely helpful and beneficial. I've talked to some of the upperclassmen who purchased the book last year and they still use it on rotations and for journal clubs. From my understanding, none of the upperclassmen were willing to sell their books because they felt it was such a valuable resource for them. If you spend time actually trying to understand the material in the book, it will be of great benefit to you. One of the great things about it is the use of an abundant amount of examples from studies and trials to outline the points made by the authors. This really helps facilitate better understanding of the concepts presented. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning how to critically evaluate studies and trials for the purposes of topic discussion, case presentations, or journal clubs.

The book turns wireless hacking into a child’s play for the advanced users who already have the experience as a network administrator. If you are a newbie, please do not be afraid of using Kali Linux. Using this book as a manual and following its helpful screenshots will surely accomplish your task quite easily; there is no doubt about it. Yes, Sir! This book makes Wi-Fi pentesting quite an easy job by making you familiar with the modern attacking techniques. But, don't get me wrong! This is not a definite Bible, but a helpful guide with step-by-step instructions (indeed, you will have to use Google for more details on the topics). In other words, please be aware of the fact that a 100-page book is far too less to provide you with the theoretical background needed to understand how things work behind the machine, but this one starts directly with an in-hand approach. Having said that, you also need some basic knowledge of Linux command line and sys-admin skills in order to avoid unnecessary frustration.
The reason I am giving 4 out of 5 stars to this book is because I would like to see a chapter about how to properly set up and configure a testing environment that could be used as a target for the techniques described in this book

I obtained this book directly through the Packt Publishing website. Once again I am very impressed with the quality of the books that they publish. This book, although somewhat shorter than others I've read with the same topic, it was still very informative. Despite the being a shorter book it contained information that was new to me, and covered topics that was not included in the other half dozen or so other books I've read about the Backtrack/Kali Linux distribution for penetration testing. The information was presented in a clear and easy to follow format that I find typical of books published by Packt. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in penetration testing.

Kali Linux Wireless Penetration Testing Essentials provides the reader a good roadmap from planning phase to reporting and everything in between. It covers basic theories of wireless vulnerabilities and attacks using tools found in the popular distro Kali Linux. The book is very easy to read and follow and include an installation guide with a VM version of Kali and network card installation. One thing that would've been great is to include a chapter on how to setup a lab environment but overall a good resource. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an introductory level wireless penetration and security understanding.

About the Author
Maurice Obstfeld is the Class of 1958 Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. His interests are in international finance and macroeconomics, areas in which he has published numerous research articles. Professor Obstfeld received his Ph.D. from MIT and later taught at Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard before moving to Berkeley. He has served as a consultant for the IMF, World Bank, European Commission, and several central banks. With Kenneth Rogoff, he is the author of Foundations of International Macroeconomics (1996). He is also the author, together with Paul Krugman, of International Economics: Theory and Policy, which has been translated into several foreign languages. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (London), and a Fellow of the Econometric Society.

Comprehensive but Convoluted

This is not a self-study book. Although it has some "friendly" figures and examples, it is not concise and this tends to confuse students. Sometimes it does not explain models from the simple to complex, and it has very long sentences that may confuse the reader. Moreover, the order of ideas explained in each chapter is not always clear, and the reader has to find out by himself what is the relevance and connection between those ideas. It is important to note that many classmates shared my opinion, and some friends who used the international edition (outside the U.S.) also thought that the book was confusing and convoluted.

On the other hand, if you have a teacher this book may be useful. It also has a very comprehensive, interesting and useful content. I would just suggest to have another source (teacher, textbook, online material) to complement Krugman and Melitz' book.
