Robin McKinley is best known for her tales about the mythical land of Damar, and the occasional retelling of time-honored fairy tales. This collection includes both -- the stories about Damar, "The Hero and the Crown" and "The Blue Sword," and Sleeping Beauty with a twist in "Spindle's End."
"The Blue Sword" introduces us to Harry (Angharad) Crewe, a bored, rather plain young woman in the remote colony of Daria. That changes when she encounters Corlath, the golden-eyed Hill-King of Damar, and the powerful young man realizes that she is a part of his future. So he kidnaps her, and Hary soon begins experiencing visions of the hero queen of Damar, Aerin -- and those visions will lead her to her destiny.
"The Hero and the Crown" is the story of Aerin, the daughter of a king and a witch -- allowed to remain, but never accepted. Despite this, she yearns to be a hero, and her discovery of a fireproofing agent gives her the chance to be one. After slaying the Black Dragon, an ancient monster, Aerin pays a price and must go to the mysterious wizard Luthe for help -- only to find herself embroiled in a battle against a dangerous foe.
"Spindle's End" takes readers to a lighter place. Princess Rosie is under a curse put on her by an evil fairy: on her 21st birthday, she will prick her finger on a spindle and die. In an effort to save her, Rosie is given to matter-of-fact good fairy Katriona, and grows up as a strong, independent girl who can speak to animals (a remarkably well-done touch) and assists a blacksmith. Needless to say, things get complex as the deadline for the curse approaches...
The range of McKinley's writing is shown in this collection. "Hero" and "Sword" are grittier, more complex, more mature and more nuanced. Damar is a lot like India, and McKinley clearly worked on making the cultures and conflicts believable, while dashing in some interesting magic. "Spindle's End" is frothier and lighter. The kingdom is more generic, and the magic more cutesy. But all the books have quirky, unconventional heroines, realistic animals (especially horses), and detailed writing.
Robin McKinley's works usually hit the mark, whether they are light and sweet or darker and grittier. This collection will entertain and amuse fantasy fans who appreciate a sword, a strong hero (of either gender), and plenty of unusual twists.

The first thing you need to know is that this is not hardcover. Its three books.
Spindle's End is a very good book (all of robin mckinley's books are), but not as good as most of her books. It's a twisted Sleeping Beauty, where sleeping beauty is named Rosie. After Pernicia casts the curse on her, she is kidnapped by a fairy named Katriona. She grows up without knowing her identity, until her 21st birthday, when it is revealed who she is. They then have 2 find a way to outsmart Pernicia.
In The Hero and the Crown, Aerin is the daughter of the king of Damar and a witchwoman of the North, and is barely tolerated as the king's daughter by the people of Damar. After discovering a secret recipe for dragonfire protection, Aerin starts slaying the small dragons of Damar, and when the Black Dragon, Maur, shows up, Aerin kills her and is nearly killed herself. She has to be healed, and defeat her uncle, Agsded, who is bringing all of the trouble on Damar. This is Robin Mckinley's second best book in my opinion.
The Blue Sword is the best of her books. Its about a girl named Harry (Angharad) Crewe, who lives a bored life in the Homelander part of Damar, many years after Aerin's time. She is seen by the Damarian king, Corlath, a young man of great power, and is kidnapped by him. He then learns that she has kelar, the royal Damarian magical Gift. Harry then has to do some really cool stuff, that i wont tell u wut, but its good.
All three of these books are really good. And, to all of you romantic freaks like me, all three of these books are quite romantic.

I LOVE MCKINLEY'S BOOKS!!!

What a GREAT collection! I had already read The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown, but I didn't have a copy and those two are MUST HAVES! Spindle was totally different than a simple retelling of Sleeping Beauty - in fact, TOTALLY different doesn't express the difference enough! The new world and characters are enjoyable and the friendships grow. The fast-paced parts are... really fast! Everyone should have these in their library.

Roberts worries about our vast and overworked [food] system and proffers the usual solutions: eat less (land-based) meat, farm more fish, support regional (not just local) agriculture and pressure food policy makers to fund research into more sustainable farming methods (including genetic modification). Once again, Roberts Delivers (and it's not hyperbole)

The End of Food follows on Paul Roberts' End of Oil. Ok, so this guy seems to be finding a lot of ends of things, so isn't this just an exaggeration? Sadly, no.

With the same comprehensive, reportorial style as his fantastic The End of Oil: On the Edge of a Perilous New World, Roberts delivers a compelling and chilling view of where things are headed in the world of the food all of us eat every day. Nuances, details, linkages and causalities are all explored dispassionately and fairly.

You might think of this book as just another apocalyptic view of the world. There are plenty of dark views to be had on the bookshelf, to be sure. But End of Food is as complete, solid and factual as End of Oil.

I read End of Oil when it came out in 2005. Many of its observations, predictions, and revelations, were dismissed by many as overblown and sensational. Some were difficult to understand and accept. But three and a half years later, his observations are widely accepted.

End of Food has the same quality -- one can hardly complete this book without having a deep and important understanding of one of the most basic elements of the human race. This is a must-read book for anyone who would like to peek into the future -- and take some actions now that will benefit not just the environment, but your health and well being.

Excellent work. Very informative and nicely written. Easy to read, fun to pursue and very enlightening.
I learned a tremendous amount about our food system and how it works which makes it easier to understand some of the difficulties we are encountering.
Highly recommended to anyone with an interest. That would be any of us as we all eat, don't we.

I have purchased more than 2 dozen copies of this title and given them to friends, politicians and food industry people. A balanced and often scary analysis of the global food system. From water, to industrialization to disease to hunger and obesity Roberts covers it all. Exceptionally well written. No time for reading ---- get the audio book! Just read it!

Kerry Madden is the author of Gentle’s Holler, Louisiana’s Song, and Jessie’s Mountain (all Viking). She spent several weeks in Monroeville, Alabama, researching Harper Lee. She lives with her family in Los Angeles, California.

Not much new here

I just read "Mockingbird" by Shields and "Up Close" back to back. Shields book was done in 2006, "Up Close" in 2009. There was very little new in "Up Close" that wasn't covered much better and in more detail by Shields. In fact, a lot of the authors' comments seemed almost exact. It's quite amazing that most the citations used were exactly the same. The photo cover for "Up Close" is also the same photo on the back of "Mockingbird," just a mirror version. This version seems a summary of the earlier book. If one wants the shorter version, apparently geared to younger than adult readers, "Up Close" will do, but Shields has also done a "for young readers" version. "Up Close" does update Lee's status since 2006, but that's only 5 or 6 small pages in the last chapter. Madden acknowledges Shields' work as an "unofficial biography," but Harper Lee also declined to cooperate with Madden's work, only wished her "the best, whether [she] pursued the project or not." Regardless of which you read, so far, there are no definitive answers to readers' most often asked questions. Facts are provided as available; some suppositions are drawn. The conclusions are up to the reader.

Advancements in the efficiency of digital computers and the evolution of reliable software for numerical computation during the past three decades have led to a rapid growth in the theory, methods, and algorithms of numerical optimization. This body of knowledge has motivated widespread applications of optimization methods in many disciplines, e.g., engineering, business, and science, and has subsequently led to problem solutions that were considered intractable not too long ago.

About the Author

Andreas Antoniou received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of London, UK, in 1966 and is a Fellow of the IET and IEEE. He served as the founding Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, B.C., Canada, and is now Professor Emeritus in the same department. He is the author of Digital Filters: Analysis, Design, and Applications (McGraw-Hill, 1993) and Digital Signal Processing: Signals, Systems, and Filters (McGraw-Hill, 2005). He served as Associate Editor/Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems from June 1983 to May 1987, as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2003, as General Chair of the 2004 International Symposium on Circuits and Systems, and is currently serving as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He received the Ambrose Fleming Premium for 1964 from the IEEE (best paper award), the CAS Golden Jubilee Medal from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, the B.C. Science Council Chairman’s Award for Career Achievement for 2000, theDoctorHonoris Causa degree from the Metsovio National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 2002, and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society 2005 Technical Achievement Award.

Wu-Sheng Lu received the B.S. degree in Mathematics from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, in 1964, the M.E. degree in Automation from the East China Normal University, Shanghai, in 1981, the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Control Science from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1983 and 1984, respectively. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada, in 1985 and Visiting Assistant Professor with the University of Minnesota in 1986. Since 1987, he has been with the University of Victoria where he is Professor. His current teaching and research interests are in the general areas of digital signal processing and application of optimization methods. He is the co-author with A. Antoniou of Two-Dimensional Digital Filters (Marcel Dekker, 1992). He served as an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1989, and Editor of the same journal from 1990 to 1992. He served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Part II, from 1993 to 1995 and for Part I of the same journal from 1999 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2005. Presently he is serving as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing. He is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Practical Optimization

Basically I liked the book. As a practicing "front-line" grunt aersospace engineer for a large Fortune 500 Company this book is a good and practical book for the control systems analysis I do. The big problem with optimization books like this one is that the examples are very contrived and trival. What a book like this is suppose to do is help one figure out if the the problem he/she is currently working can be "cast" into an optimization problem and then solved by any of the algorithms presented. This book is a little weak in that respect. But it is still useful and I am glad I have it in my collection.
