About the Author
Ken Liu is one of the most lauded authors in the field of American literature. A winner of the Nebula, Hugo, World Fantasy, Locus Sidewise, and Science Fiction & Fantasy Translation Awards, he has also been nominated for the Sturgeon and Locus Awards. His short story, “The Paper Menagerie,” is the first work of fiction to simultaneously win the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy Awards. He also translated the 2015 Hugo Award–winning novel The Three-Body Problem, written by Cixin Liu, which is the first novel to ever win the Hugo award in translation. The Grace of Kings, his debut novel, is the first volume in a silkpunk epic fantasy series set in a universe he and his wife, artist Lisa Tang Liu, created together. It was a finalist for a Nebula Award and the recipient of the Locus Award for Best First Novel. He lives near Boston with his family.

Beautifully written and greatly varied stories, from delicately imagined to depressing and thought-provoking

This book draws one in gently, but soon travels to dark places.

The first two stories introduce the reader to the delicacy, originality and beauty of Liu's imagination, expressed in science fiction and in fantasy. The more pervasive themes of this collection include the historical (and alt-historical) interactions between Americans, Chinese, and Japanese, in various combinations; the internal conflicts of those whose heritage or history includes two or more of these; and, more generally, the mystery of how human beings can commit and justify atrocities. When stories with such a focus introduce SF or magical elements, those elements are sometimes well integrated, but sometimes oddly incidental.

Liu is so compelling a storyteller that he pulled me into and through the horrific details some of these stories include. I hope this warning does not discourage many readers from taking the same journey.

Stunningly Gorgeous Stories That Have it All!

Paper Tiger is my new favorite short story collection. The title story and "Mono No Aware" are worth the price of the book (and I bought the hardback)! Liu develops complex characters faster than anyone I've ever read, and his stories have interesting plots. Some of them are science fiction, folkloric, strange, or fantastical. Others are pure literary. Either way, it's a tough book to put down because each story is better than the last. He employs rich language and complex themes that made me reflect on the stories long after reading them. It's a must read, and I'll be following Liu's career from here on.

Best book I've read all year

I just recently read this from start to finish during a five day camping trip along a river in the Sierra Nevadas. Something about being in nature, disconnected from technology, and having the mental space and silence to really take in Liu's ideas amplified how absolutely breath taking these stories are. I love the how he mixes the genres of sci-fi, detective drama, tech thriller, and Asian history. I've been recommending this to everyone. Beautiful writing combined with captivating plots. A++

Neil Moffatt was born in West London in 1957, moving to Cardiff in 1969 where he now resides. A degree in Electronics at Liverpool University took him to a 4+ year career as a Broadcast Engineer at BBC Radio in Central London. A career switch to programming involved a move to the IBM UK headquarters in Portsmouth, and the start of a 20+ year in IT. Health problems led to a self employed career as cabinet maker, artist, electrician, and more recently professional photographer and author. Neil is an emotional man, passionate about product usability, the Oriental game of Go, Liverpool FC and health. He still plays soccer regularly in his 50s. An Excellent Introduction to the Game and Strategy.

As a recent beginner in the game of Go, I have spent a lot of time looking for useful resources to learn. At their core, the rules of Go are actually pretty straightforward, and this book does a fine job of explaining them. In the process, there are picture examples of these rules in action, to help with understanding. Unfortunately, due to the basic limitations of a book, in comparison to the kind of interactive tutorials you find on the internet, the rules explanations, while perfectly adequate, don't really "sparkle." (This issue, though, appears to be addressed in some of the newer Go Ebooks.)

However, where this book truly does excel, is in the later sections. After the rules introduction, Moffatt proceeds to look at real life examples of games as learning tools. The book takes several games, played by real people over the internet on the KGS server, and examines them move by move. Mr. Moffatt explains not only the strategy behind each move, but also evaluates mistakes made, ways to avoid those mistakes, and examples of good moves as well. This methodical, analytical approach really gives a deeper understanding of the way to play the game beyond mere mechanical rules-practice. We are allowed to examine the thought process behind games, examine the flaws in the process and are helped to understand how we as new players may be able to avoid those mistakes in the future.

The value of this for me, as a learner, was immense. In practicing the game (using beginners-oriented software like the SmartGo iPhone app) I found myself making the same mistakes I had seen in the book, and was able to "unlearn" them quickly. I feel confident in saying that this book improved not only my level as a beginning player, but also helped reduce the frustration I was feeling as one.

For the analytically minded (and what person attracted to a game like Go isn't?) this book should be an excellent introduction to the playing of Go.

Comparing Neil's Books.. Unique in the field!

This review compares and contrasts Neil Moffatt's wonderful go books on playing the ancient game of Go. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you buy all of them if you want to progress in, and understand go! The prices are very reasonable for what you get, much more so than many other go books being sold today, and I have read and reviewed over 40, including some very rare and expensive ones, for the library purchasing database.
First, in general.

I am a strict 9 rated amateur at 6 kyu with loose/web ratings. I am a much better chess player, but even though both games are zero sum, full information, two player, non chance combinatorials, the similarities stop there! If you're new to go, you'll simply LOVE it, possibly more than chess, due to the subtleties in styles of play and the speed with which you'll be able to beat Crazy Stone and other software programs--you WILL GET GOOD FAST.

You'll still be challenged on the KGS server of course (online go play). Unlike in chess, there are even points where the game becomes cooperative, "somewhat" like stock openings, but much more subtle.
Moffatt uses a unique and one of a kind teaching method in all 4 of these books, right down to his own notation.

In fact, it IS a lot like the "missing" go notation that we see so often IN chess! At first, it might annoy you that he describes rather than details all the 1/2/3 moves in the diagram, but very quickly you find that all the numbers in the other books are distracting compared to Neil. You'll also find he uses triangles differently than "standard" (if there is such a thing in this rare little field in the West), and has his own little "circles" to point out the key discussion points.

If you're a beginner, you always ask questions you can't find answers to in books, like "so why can't I just plop pieces in the middle of that black territory and eat up his liberties? So what if I'm taken, making him surround me will force him to cover his liberties with his own stones, and eat up his own territory, won't it?" Until Moffatt, NO books gave details to these common sense beginner questions. For more advanced players, Neil gives analysis a LOT like chess--why here and not here, which is the Priyome (key strategic move, but instead of Russian, Japanese terms are used like Gote for taking the initiative, Atari like check, Moyo for seeing potential territory expansion, Seki for a stand off, tesuji like a chess exclamation point, and Joseki, like stock memorized openings or lines, normally in corners in go) and why, what "lines" happen if you fail to spot this cut or opportunity.

Because the combinatorial explosion is millions of times more in go than chess, you can't really "fully explore" what "might" have happened with different moves, or you'd exceed the atoms in the universe very quickly--the game is that much more combinatorially complex than chess. But Moffatt tries, in all his books, MUCH more than any other author I've studied.

The Moffatt books were published in 2009, 2010 and 2012, with the most amazing, and most advanced one first (Games of Go) and More Go by example: Improving single-digit kyu play the most recent in 2012. But I recommend you buy them all at once, then read them all, in this general order: 1. (Learn Go: Possibly the most played board game in the World); 2. (Go by Example: Correcting common mistakes in double digit kyu play); 3. (More Go by example: Improving single-digit kyu play); 4. Games of Go.

In the more advanced books you'll see comments like "don't forget that even with a starting handicap, your black stones will be on control, not profit lines." No further information is given on this (it appears in Go by example double digit), and you'd have to have read Learn Go first to understand it. Still, to be honest, ALL these books cover topics from 20 kyu to high Dan games you have to know! That means you can jump in and get something out of all of them right away if you want to get a feel for the bigger picture.

One thing very few go reviews talk about is that fact that go really contains about 4 to 6 or more "little" games going on at the same time. Moffatt (as well as many of the very fine Japanese Dans) is careful to keep pointing out that you don't always have to play where the opponent wants you to play! This is much like playing 4 simultaneous chess games--only in a few, you can have the space to yourself for a little while! The 12 games thoroughly analyzed in the most impressive book (Games of go) show both "gentleman" style and bloody cutthroat.

But even in the epic battles, there are twists and turns, and as you probably know, it is likely that in the 3,000 plus years of go by millions of players, no game has ever been repeated! We're talking 10^700 combinations here, notwithstanding very simple rules, which at 1,000 million teraflops a second for the 31 million seconds in each year, would take more time to brute force analyze than the projected 1,000 trillion years left in the universe!

Regardless of your go level, or current library, at the price/value ratio of Moffatt's fine books, all four are a MUST whether you're a beginner or advanced player. Moffatt humbly says the books are for 20 to 6 kyu, possibly because he's not a Dan, but that's simply silly--many Dan players LOVE his 3,000 plus diagram Games of Go book, and one high ranked professional Dan player told me at a go conference that he felt that book could be studied for a lifetime, just like the Japanese classics!

SPECIAL NOTE FOR GO BEGINNERS: Hundreds of books and articles on Go make a statement similar to: "Go has very few rules, which even a child can learn. The rules of play are MUCH simpler than chess, for example." These statements are true, but deceiving! If we separate those simple rules of play from principles or FACTS of play, Go has thousands more than chess! For example, a rule of play may state "you can't commit suicide by moving into Atari" (like moving into check).

A fact or principle, on the other hand, might state, "When neither black or white can make eyes, there are no kos, and all liberties are simple dame, with two competing groups where shared liberties are less than two, the black or white group MUST die." (Nowakowski, Games of No Chance (Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Publications), p. 249). Obviously "simple rules" do NOT mean simple play, strategy or tactics!

Paul F. Crickmore is the author both of the first detailed book to be published on the SR-71 Blackbird, and of the standard reference work on the subject - the much-acclaimed Lockheed SR-71: The Secret Missions Exposed. He is an honorary member of several A-12 and SR-71 veterans' associations. Paul is also the author of the first detailed book about the F-117, written in partnership with his wife Alison and published in 1999. The author lives in Woodbridge, UK.

This title completes the analysis of the extraordinary Mach 3 Lockheed planes by the “Air Vanguard” series.
Paul Crickmore details in a clear and authoritative way all the peculiarities of the SR-71 and traces its history since the days of the genesis as a bomber,then evolved in the strategic recce planes that still owns speed and altitude records after more than 40 years.
A very nice book that illustrates the intense and successful career of a plane that stands high in aviation history.

Done it again

I have been a fan of miss Atkinson ever since I stumbled upon her book Tangled up in you and fell in love with the Savioe family. Lost in the moment picks up about where Tangled up in you ends, but you get no less enjoyment from Marie and Marcus's dance of love as you did with Luke and Roxy's. Even if the book hadn't been offered as free, I was looking to buy this next installment and am patiently waiting for her to write the third novel. Marcus's character is developed a little rough around the edges, but a heart of gold and Marie comes across as both shy and determined with a side of tough as nails. I really enjoyed reading this novel and hearing more about the Savioe family and possible or existing love interests.

Drez and Marie finding out more about these two characters was a joy. He's a misunderstood new kid and she's a sheltered only girl in a rough and tumble family full of boys.This was a nice continuation of the series. Seeing the events of the previous book from a bit of an outsider's perspective was nice. Even seeing Mr. Saintshill from someone else's view helped me understand him a little more. Marie is not confident in herself, and for some reason is afraid getting hurt. I wonder if she's been hurt previously. Drez is understandably afraid after losing his entire family the previous year. The animosity between Jess and Beau is odd. In the first book she had a crush on him and he said he wasn't interested. I find Jess's actions puzzling she seems almost jealous of Roxy and Marie. She's becoming shady and I don't like it. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

The book flowed much better, again definitely better for the 18+ crowd. I see a few minor mistakes using the wrong word here or there. Nothing glaringly obvious. This book could be read without reading 'Tangled Up in You' because it does give an explanation of what happened then. But having read both books made it more complete.

Great Book of Master Work

Unbelievably expensive book , but the only want to get documentation of his intriguing work. really good, though of course i would like to see more floor plans at larger scale. but great, none-the-less.
