Enchanting & Romantic short story...

This short story was originally in Love Stories From Hell, a YA paranormal romance anthology. I loved it then, and I love it now.

Melissa Marr does mildly dark/tragish romance well!

I'd never read a story about selchies (men/women who also turn into seals) but I found this short story to be just as enchanting and romantic as Marr's Fairie Series Wicked Lovely, and I totally wasn't expecting that. Seals, don't sound romantic to me, but Marr does such a good job crafting this short romance that it didn't feel like a love story involving sea-mammals. Okay, so that probably made this story sound really weird, but it's not. It's well written! And it's about a teenage girl who accidentally get's involved with two very different selchie's who are both attractive, but not equally good for her.

If you are a fan of Marr's other young adult works then I am sure you will enjoy this as well. Just remember it is a short story and it is YA. But it's sooo very enjoyable.

Selchie, Selkie, Silkie Oh My!

Awwww! What a sweet story!

Love Struck is where Alana meets a Selchie aka Selkie aka Silkie aka a magical being who shifts from Seal to human. The lore has been that Silkies shed their seal skin to kidnap a lover and takes them back to see with them or binds them and live on land together. Either way it never seems like the ideal love situation, you knowing being forced into a love situation. BUT ANYWAY! Alana accidently steps on Murrin's skin and just like that they are magically bound to one another.

The rest of the story is one where Murrin works on earning Alana's trust, friendship, and love but not without some obstacles. JUST READ TO GET THE DEETS!

I think what I liked most about this story was the message that love does not have to be complicated and that there is no need to self sabotage, making something that is right so wrong. Alana had to learn to allow happiness and love into her life. Love does not have to be complicated... it's not always perfect, more often than not this is the case but it should never be complicated.

At any rate I say read it! This story made me want to read more stories where Silkies were involved. It was a nice change. :-)

Stops just as it's getting good

I did enjoy the read (and I've loved all her other "Wicked Lovely" books), but it was just too short. Just as I felt I was starting to get into the story, it was over and I felt a little cheated (not because of the price. $2 wasn't a bad price at all to pay for this story), mostly because it seemed like there were so many places that the story could go and then BAM! It's over. Not that it isn't worth reading, but it's not very satisfying.

A+ - Best in it's class!

Living in the Village was easy an read and gave me a clear understanding of what I need to do with my finances. The thing is that much of what the author discusses, we already know. It's just common sense. However, reading it and putting these practices to work for you is another story. My husband and I are just starting out and we've decided to use this book as a guide to help us attain our financial goals. I've always been practical when it comes to saving, but there are so many other nuances that I now realize that I've overlooked. This book is right on time especially with the state of the economy. I'm sure I'm not the only person that would like to have more than a few years stashed away for a rainy season. We've been going through a tumultuous storm for the past 3 years and this book can truly help put a lot of people back on track...if you heed to the solutions provided in the book. I felt like I was talking with a financial advisor without the huge fees attached. The testimonies gave me tons of food for thought and inspiration for my life. They made financial literacy real to me. Definitely a great read!

Well, personally being a finance professional myself I usually find myself in the self improvement section at my local borders, B&N, etc....I've read Dave Ramsey, Suzy Orman and a few others...The only thing I have to say about this book is I really enjoyed the ''estimated budget'' section...That was helpful to me and I noticed it is an a lot more helpful than Dave Ramsey ""total money makeover section''....I just wished Mr Mack expanded on that a lot more. I guess you can't always get everything you want.I will say,I found chapter 6 very helpful to me particularly four and five when he went on to talk about the credit cards. I must admit I do have not only my american express , brooks brothers card and Jc Penney. I need to get rid of the ...JCP like YESTERDAY. After reading chapter 7 I noticed one thing that I am a total victim of ....when Mr Mack mentioned '''whichever card you choose do not use for everyday purchases....My weakness is American express...the reward points are like DRUGS. All in all, the book I would give it a B+ only because I really wish he would have expanded a lot more on actually breaking down your spending diary(pg 281)

I have always been interested in the dark area of science and spirituality, the explanation of why we are here and who thinks our thoughts is it our brain or our mind? what makes us move and think? where's that energy coming from and who created it, who is in my mind and why we think what we think?

This book covers these questions and more from a scientific point of view but from a more open minded and advanced scientific thinking. The quantum mechanics has opened a new door of knowledge to understand many mysterious and unknown events in life. Mr. Mensky goes deep into the many questions, and answers with the help of Everett's many worlds interpretation giving a fresh breath of air to the old mechanistic and materialistic scientific point of view.

This books asks and unveils many unknown subjects that even some day to day people (non scientists) have never even asked themselves.

Great start to this series!

This isn't a holiday book per se, but it does take place in snowy Alaska during the holiday season, so I snuck it into my holiday read pile. This book was a really good contemporary romance. It is the first book in a trilogy and you get to see glimpses and see the beginnings of all three romances that the series is going to follow. This book is about Sloan & Walker. Sloan is a NYC girl who has come to Alaska to give moral support to her friend Grier (her book is the second in the series, Come Fly With Me, and will be out Nov, 2012.) Walker is the hometown boy who is the lawyer representing Grier in the battle over her father's will.

There were certain things that I really loved about this book. Sloan is a freelance travel writer and her trip just happens to coincide with the town's annual bachelor/bachelorette competition. As a result, Sloan both enters and is writing on the competition as a journalist. This allows her to observe a lot of the relationships in the town and those that are having issues. She dispenses some wonderful no-nonsense, tough-love advice pretty much throughout the entire book that I loved. She ruffles more than a few feathers this way too, but I loved the honesty that came through the book because of it. Romances tend to follow a lot of games, especially in romance novels, but Sloan's character kept everything real and in perspective. I really loved that about her character.

She's an awesome, self-assured chick, but even she realizes that is not her in real life in NYC. She is a better person in Alaska. It was wonderful to watch her growth as a character because the book starts out at her mother's over Thanksgiving when the pressures to get married are dragging her down and her self-esteem down. As a former ugly duckling, she has a hard time standing up for herself in her real life where everyone always expects more.

I think that personal growth is going to be the main theme in all these books. It certainly was the case for Walker too as he adjusts his attitude toward commitment and what he wants out of life.

There are two other couples to come...Grier & Mick, and Avery & Roman. Both couples already have serious issues and I can't wait to read their stories. The little bits that you already get to see through this book and definitely tantalizing! I definitely have found another new author that I am excited about. This was a fun one. I recommend picking it up for a sit-by-the-fire-and-read kind of day!

Cold outside, lukewarm romance inside...

Sloan McKinley seems to have it all: looks, money and a successful career as a free-lance travel journalist. The one thing that the thirty-something New Yorker doesn't have is a husband, and her mother never misses an opportunity to point this out to her. Sloan is not looking forward to the upcoming holidays and more of her mother's pointed comments about her single status.

Sloan's best friend Grier is stuck in Indigo, Alaska (population 700+) trying to settle her late father's estate, and is encountering some hostility from the locals. Sloan decides to pay her friend a visit to provide some much needed moral support. Sloan arrives in Indigo just as the town is gearing up for its annual Bachelor Competition and the journalist in her senses a story.

Meanwhile, Sloan's arrival in the tiny town hasn't gone unnoticed by the local bachelors, especially Walker Montgomery. Walker is fascinated by Sloan, and the attraction is mutual. There's just one little problem...Walker has decided that marriage and commitment are not for him. Has Sloan found true love in quirky little Indigo or will she have to settle for a vacation fling?

While I didn't think this was a bad book by any means, I felt that it was missing that certain "something" that can make a contemporary romance stand out from the hordes of others just like it. While the writing was certainly competent, the story didn't pack much of an emotional wallop and I had some real issues with parts of the storyline.

This is one busy little romance! We are following not one but FOUR relationships, which was about two too many for me. I felt that the other couples detracted from the main romance and the development of the two lead characters. I think the author missed a great opportunity with the setting - a small town in Alaska should have had a lot of potential, but most of this story takes place in the town's upscale hotel. ( And don't ask me why a town of 700 people in a remote area would need a large hotel/conference center, but that's another issue). The few scenes that did take place outside of the hotel felt rather awkward. A day spent having a town-wide snowball fight when the temperature is in the single digits with spectators sitting outside in lawn chairs? Hey, I live in snow country...it's gonna take more than a down jacket and a wool cap to keep you warm for hours on end!

This is picky, but what's with the names in this story? Sloan, Avery, Grier, Walker...I had the feeling that the author picked them out of a book titled "Trendy Names for Your Newborn".

Bottom Line: The writing is fine, and there are some funny scenes, but this is a fairly generic contemporary romance. Don't expect too much from the Alaskan setting; this could have taken place in just about any hotel lounge anywhere. This is the first book in a trilogy (Book 2, Come Fly With Me: An Alaskan Nights Novel is due out later this year) and a lot of time is spent laying the foundation for the next two stories.

Walker is a lawyer up in Alaska and he's working with Sloan's best friend, Grier, in an inheritance battle with Grier's half-sister. It sounded interesting but I was disappointed.
The book doesn’t just focus on one couple but a lot of other couples. The main couple is Sloan and Walker but the reader doesn’t see a lot of them until a little past the midway point of the book. The author decided to introduce readers to Grier and Mick, Avery and Roman, and Jessica and Jack instead of focusing on Sloan and Walker. There’s romance hinted at with Julia and Dr. Cloud, plus Amanda and Skate. So, the other books of the series are pretty much ready to go with little other romances intertwined. All I kept thinking was ‘Where the heck is Sloan and Walker, the couple in THIS book?’ We even get a sex scene with Grier and Mick before we get one with Sloan and Walker. The author wrote the POV shifts correctly, meaning she started a new chapter or used a scene break to change POV, but I don’t like reading books in minor characters’ POVs when the main couple is ignored.
I couldn’t connect well with any of the characters because the author kept jumping from heroine to heroine, hero to hero, for me to understand and fall in love with any set couple. I also didn’t like how ALL the characters kept secrets from each other. I understand creating suspense for the reader but, by the time some of the secrets were revealed, I just didn’t care anymore or I’d already guessed it.
The book is repetitive. The same characters kept saying the same thing, thinking the same thing and using the same excuse as to why they shouldn’t do something. And I didn’t understand the rules behind the bachelorette competition/bachelor auction. Rules were hinted at but not fully explained even as the festivities happened. Maybe I just missed it as I read.
What I liked about the book was the nosy grandmas and the town’s inhabitants. Indigo, Alaska sounds like a wonderful place to live. Even though it’s freezing, it’s warm with company and love. I thought it was weird, however, that the grandmas who are in their sixties or seventies and a few other older people dropped the F-bomb as if it was no big deal. Just didn’t make sense.
The book was very well written with no typos, which is a breath of fresh air for me since I’ve read a lot of books lately with typos and grammar issues, and I like the author’s style of writing. I just didn’t like that she included so many characters with their own stories in book 1 of the series.

A Useful Guide to Applied Self-Hypnosis

The book arrived promptly and in very good condition. I bought this book to replace several that I have given away. I liked Lecron's book because the methods for inducing hypnosis and most of the applications were clearly explained; the ones that I tried worked for me. I found post-hypnotic suggestion a particularly useful tool. Some of the successful applications were the use of hypnosis to reduce my extreme fear of flying, to be able to sleep and wake up refreshed in a different time zone, or to prepare for a business briefing. I have also used it for enhanced concentration. The psychology in some instances is antiquated and possibly offensive to some, however one must take into account the period and attitudes of the time it was written. I am sure there are a number of good, if not better sources on the subject, but this one was adequate for my immediate needs.

I bought my copy of LeCron's _Self-Hypnotism_ when I was a sophomore in college, back in the late 1970s. It has become dog-eared over the years since, and the binding is starting to come loose, but it is one of my most treasured reference books, and I own a LOT of reference books. This book was old and dated when I bought it, but even when I pick it up today and read through it, I realize that it sticks to certain fundamental concepts and truths that it will likely always have value.

This was the first book I ever bought on hypnosis or self-hypnosis. I've added several more volumes on this topic over the subsequent years, some of which are quite good, but I keep coming back to LeCron because of his easy, down-to-earth and comfortable writing style, his practical approach, and his useful applications. I have used his examples and techniques to successfully overcome a number of personal difficulties. I'm a musician and stage fright has always been a problem for me. I used his techniques to overcome it and to build confidence in my playing ability. It helped me to stop smoking. When working through a mountain of material I needed to assimilate for my Master's thesis, I turned my subconscious loose on the problem before turning in for the night, giving myself the suggestion that my subconscious would find what I was looking for. It worked while I slept and came up with an insightful and unique theory, which became the foundation for my Thesis. While not strictly self-hypnosis, it was because of what I learned of the workings of the subconscious mind from this book that gave me the idea to do this. I've even used his pendulum technique during exams. I recall asking my physics professor if he minded if I used a pendulum for an upcoming mid-term. Not only did he not mind, he encouraged me to do so, and even took a moment out from his lecture to mention the technique to the class and the theory behind it -- namely that the subconscious mind likely already knows the answers and using the pendulum was one successful technique at getting to the truth. I was not the only student who used a pendulum for that mid-term. :) I scored high on it, too, and I've made occasional use of this technique ever since.

My attitude toward LeCron and the topic of self-hypnosis is, "What have you got to lose?" Nothing. The book is cheap, it's a rather slender volume that reads easily, so it's something that can be knocked off in a weekend, and the techniques certainly can do no harm, but can only help. Once you've had a taste of success with this book, you'll want more and it will provide you with the foundation to achieve your goals. To me, LeCron is a must read. Pure and simple.

One of the best books of its kind....

One of my favorite books from decades ago. I think this is the beset book written on hypnosis that I have been able to discover. I have used it to quit smoking forty years ago. Through the years I have used it on less stubborn problems but it has become an effective tool in my arsenal of self-help techniques. I recommend the book highly.

The book contends that, contrary to much US rhetoric, China’s actions in these areas is often much more flexible and accommodating than the US position, and that the Chinese are much more knowledgeable about, and understanding and appreciative of, the United States than vice versa.
