Epiphany

When I was a small boy living in London over 25 years ago, my father used to take me to the Science Museum in South Kensington almost every Saturday to attend the afternoon lectures. One Saturday it was not a lecture that we attended but a film by a gentleman named Jacob Bronowski. I sat mesmorised by the episode of the 'Ascent of Man' that was shown that afternoon. I understood much of the science which was being discussed and already had a good grounding in the subject. But within the despcription of man's pursuit of understanding was a humanity that I had never experienced before. At the end of the film, Bronowski crouched by a pond in a concentration camp and scooped a handful of ashes from the pool of water and, fixing his steady eye on the camera, said, 'I beseech you in the bowels of Christ, consider you may be wrong'. Bronowski was quoting Cromwell, but in that brief moment was encapsulated the escence of science, humanity, art,and understanding. The Ascent of Man, in the 1970s an attempt to bring a deeper and wider understanding of science and humanity to the public, is now confined to Open University television schedules. The book remains available to all. It is a revelation. Bronowski was a giant. Read this book and you may come closer to an understanding of the world around you, but when you finally put it down, having formed an opinion,'consider you may be wrong'. As for me, I went on to study physics as a first degree and the arts as a higher degree. I share Bronowski's atheism but there is never a day that passes or an opinion I offer when I do not heed that advice and question the world around me.

Evolution of knowledge

One of my all time favorite books from college that is definitely a keeper and still relevent after all these years. If you read each chapter and view the corresponding video text it produce sa truly amazing insight into the development of mankinds knowledge. Similiar in style to "Connections" it is quite possibly more engrossing. The book is a fascinating journey , written in a style that illuminates the darkest and distant passages of time with lucidity and foresight. My personal favorite chapter(6) was The Starry Messenger which was eventually about(like knowledge Bronowski builds on the past) Galileo and his relationship with the Catholic Church as a result of his theories.I love this book and the understanding it gave me to subjects I felt less than interested in. This book has the power to make even the most abstract and esoteric theories interesting. A beautiful book that puts all the knowledge of the past into perspective in an entertaining manner that can lead a young mind into areas of interest they may never have persued. The book is also full of richly detailed photographs, full color prints and other visual aids that further explain the topic duscussed.I would recommened this book for any young student in high school or approaching college who is even remotely interested in the connections between science and the evolution of mankind. A great gift idea for that budding scientist or historian on your list.

An Outstanding and Important Book

Jacob Bronowski was a genuine Renaissance man. This, his most famous book, looks at the history of science from the perspective of Bronowski's deep, humanist philosophy. Bronowski--along with C.P. Snow--saw art and science as two aspects of the same human enterprise: that of understanding the world and expressing that world in human terms. Here Bronowski shows those connections: why Mendeleev's periodic table was part of "the greatest collective work of art" in history--that is, physics; why the Watts Towers of Los Angeles are like the molecules in a copper wire. THE ASCENT OF MAN is a symphony for which SCIENCE AND HUMAN VALUES was merely a prelude. An outstanding, and vitally important book. "I am infinitely saddened," Bronowski writes, "to find myself suddenly surrounded in the West by a terrible loss of nerve." We must not turn our backs on science--we must finally discover it. One of those writers whose every page contains a brilliant idea, Bronowksi is well worth reading. Whether you are new to emergency US or you run an emergency fellowship, this is the book for you. It was hard to imagine that the previous editions could be improved, but the authors have well and truly done it. Comprehensive, readable, with very high standards of schematics and ultrasound images, this book covers the breadth of ED US practice very well and goes into a great amount of depth in the always-popular areas of critical care and echocardiography. My copy is chained to the bookcase in our education office and there's always a queue to read it. Well done to the authors for an outstanding achievement. Cheers Justin Bowra, Sydney Australia

Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses) tells the remarkable WWII story of Jan Zabinski, the director of the Warsaw Zoo, and his wife, Antonina, who, with courage and coolheaded ingenuity, sheltered 300 Jews as well as Polish resisters in their villa and in animal cages and sheds. Using Antonina's diaries, other contemporary sources and her own research in Poland, Ackerman takes us into the Warsaw ghetto and the 1943 Jewish uprising and also describes the Poles' revolt against the Nazi occupiers in 1944. She introduces us to such varied figures as Lutz Heck, the duplicitous head of the Berlin zoo; Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, spiritual head of the ghetto; and the leaders of Zegota, the Polish organization that rescued Jews. Ackerman reveals other rescuers, like Dr. Mada Walter, who helped many Jews pass, giving lessons on how to appear Aryan and not attract notice. Ackerman's writing is viscerally evocative, as in her description of the effects of the German bombing of the zoo area: ...the sky broke open and whistling fire hurtled down, cages exploded, moats rained upward, iron bars squealed as they wrenched apart. The Zookeeper’s Wife, a true story set in Warsaw, Poland at the onset of WWII, is both horrifying and endearing on a scale I’ve not experienced in years. Antonina lives with her husband and small son in a villa on the zoo grounds. They are extremely knowledgeable about the animals in their care; each one with their individual quirks, and all loved like family. The zoo is well ahead of its time in providing natural habitats for its residents. Laid out like a lush garden, it’s a world famous showplace, a haven for both people and animals. Then the Nazis come with their tanks and bombs and total disregard for life. Drunken Gestapo agents shoot animals in their cages for sport. A pig the son is caring for is snatched away and butchered. But somehow the family manages, by one clever ploy after another, to remain at the villa where they daringly rescue Jews and work in the resistance. Yet through all the fear and deprivation, the spirit triumphs.
Yes, at times Ackerman indulges in excessive scene-setting, eulogizing linden trees, for instance. Or she'll go off on a pages-long explanatory tangent - which, despite my impatient nature, nearly always proved fascinating. But all-in-all, I'd have to rank The Zookeeper's Wife right up there with Leon Uris' Mila 18 for a story that will haunt you forever.

Just started reading and already CAN'T PUT IT DOWN! I love how Ms. Ackerman captures small details, that really do help the reader visualize what is being read (authors are amazing)! Looking forward (not really, hate when great books have to end) to finishing and then watching the movie! Kudos to Diane Ackerman on a well written book!

Will post an updated review once I am done, but unless Amazon adds a 6th star to the rating, I can assure you, you won't want to put it down either!

Not in original key, and CD doesn't have standard files

We bought it thinking it would be fun to play along to the classics. The back cover lists songs with their famed artists, like "I Love Rock 'N Roll" with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and "Smells like Teen Spirit" with Nirvana. Unfortunately, the sheet music inside and the "Sound-Alike CD Tracks" are not in the same key of their famed counterpart.

The disc comes with a proprietary speed slow-downer lite, and there aren't any typical files that can be exported (i.e. Midi or MP3). Mind you, it almost didn't matter, seeing as how they weren't in the original key anyhow and also had no melody (vocals) to follow along with as a guide for beginners.

I can't recommend this product over the many better ones out there.

Hardy turns to Glitsky for help, but when Holiday is implicated in the grisly killings of two more men, their pleas fall on hostile ears. To avoid arrest, Holiday turns fugitive, and the police believe three things: that Hardy's a liar protecting Holiday, that Holiday is a cold-blooded killer, and that Glitsky's a bad cop on the wrong side of the law.

And as the deadly pursuit for a murderer intensifies, Hardy, Glitsky, and even their families are directly threatened by the forces that want to see Holiday brought down. Cut off from the system that they both served, denied justice from the corridors of power, and increasingly isolated at every turn, Hardy and Glitsky face their darkest hour. For when the law that is meant to shield and protect those closest to them fails, they must look to another, more primal law in order to survive.

Murder and mayhem in San Francisco.

In John Lescroart's new thriller, "The First Law," San Francisco resembles the Wild West. A corrupt and malicious individual named Wade Panos wields tremendous political power. Panos and his gang rob and murder whomever they please with impunity, and the police either cannot or will not stop them.
Abe Glitsky, a veteran detective, has been moved out of homicide and into the payroll department of the police force, much to his chagrin. However, when Sam Silverman, an elderly friend of Abe's father, is robbed and murdered, Abe takes a look at the case. Much to his surprise, Abe is stymied in his inquiries at every turn; it soon becomes clear that his colleagues on the force do not want Abe interfering in their investigation. To make matters worse, Abe's good friend, Dismas Hardy, represents a man who is being framed for killing Sam. As Abe and Dismas continue to challenge Wade Panos, dead bodies begin piling up and it becomes clear that if Dismas and Abe do not back off, they may be risking their lives.
I love the characters of Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky. They are macho and sensitive as well as intelligent and compassionate. I admit that the plot of "The First Law" is a bit far-fetched. It is difficult to believe that such lawlessness would prevail in a city as cosmopolitan as San Francisco. However, Lescroart makes the point that evil people with no conscience do exist. If normally law-abiding citizens are to fight such individuals, they sometimes have to act in unorthodox ways in order to survive.
At four hundred pages, "The First Law" is a bit too long. However, the plot and the dialogue are lively and compelling and the characters are nicely drawn. Lescroart maintains a high level of suspense and excitement until "The First Law" reaches its dramatic and action-packed conclusion.

WHO WILL REMAIN ALIVE BY THE END OF THIS STORY ?

THE FIRST LAW is the latest book in the series involving San Francisco lawyer Dismas (Diz) Hardy and police lieutenant Abe Glitsky. However, it is neither a legal thriller or courtroom drama as the earlier books have been, but is a straight police procedural (with the investigation handled in a totally inept way) interspersed with fast paced action. Glitsky has recovered from the severe wounds suffered in THE OATH, but has been replaced as head of the Homicide Unit during his recuperation and is now head of payroll. When his father's best friend is murdered during a robbery at his pawnshop, Glitsky soon finds his requests and suggestions during the investigation are viewed as interference and an attempt to regain his former position. Meanwhile, the detectives in charge uncover evidence that points to a good friend and former client of Diz, John Holiday.
As subsequent murders occur and Hardy uncovers evidence that calls into question Holiday's guilt, he tries to convince an increasingly reluctant Abe to enlist the help of the police and subsequently their mutual friend DA Clarence Jackman. However, these leads point in the direction of the family of Wade Panos, the politically well connected head of the Patrol Special, a private SF police force which has been the source of much of the information being used to develop the case against Holiday. Concomitantly, Hardy and his long time mentor and associate David Freeman are pursing a multimillion dollar civil case against Panos and his organization (and also the police department as their liaison) based on allegations of brutality and evidence tampering. Thus, when apparently conclusive evidence against Holiday appears and Holiday subsequently disappears, Hardy is viewed as having lost all credibilty because of his conflict of interest. Further murders and violence incidents occur, eventually both the Hardy and Glitsky families are directly threatened.
This story is filled with the characters that we have come to know through the course of the previous books, including Diz' wife Frannie and kids Rebecca and Vincent, his brother-in-law Moses McGuire, Treya Glitsky, and Gina Roake. They and their relationships are further developed and are an integral element of this story. The reader has to accept the premise that police investigators can be so totally misled, and the compounding of their errors is extremely frustrating at times. However, the story proceeds in a way that is totally internally consistent, and it will immediately resonate with any reader who has either has experienced police incompetence/malfeasance or knows someone who has.
In the author's preface preceding the story, Lescroart acknowledges the inspiration derived from BLOODY SEASON, a book about the gunfight at the OK Corral. THE FIRST LAW then begins with a brief scene involving Diz and Moses that takes place chronologically very near the end of the story, and that effectively creates the tension that will build for the rest of the book with regard to whether the faith in the law upon which Hardy and Glitsky have relied their entire lives is misplaced. Midway through page three Moses defines "the first law" for Diz as "you protect your life and the people you love", and we immediately are aware that this story may well end with the modern day equivalent of the OK Corral shootout. Thus, there is never any real mystery of who the murderers and criimnals are, although there are a few minor surprises. The real question is who will be left standing and who might suffer collateral damage, and it is not pretty. In fact, even several of the good guys and long time characters in the series are not immune from the violence which results from the original botched robbery and murder.
So, if you want an action filled story with some legal twists and are a fan Hardy and Glitsky, you should like this book.

A welcome first exposure to Lescroart

I picked up a copy The First Law in an airport bookstore when faced with an unexpected flight delay. I had not read any of Lescroart's other works and did not know what to expect. The storyline was intriguing, effectively bouncing back between the present and the past while building to the final scenes in the book. Character development was solid, although I suspect that the book would have been better is I was more familiar with some of the characters that clearly had been part of Lescroart's previous works. The First Law was not spectacular but it was definitely good enough that I will be back to sample more of Lescroart's works.

In such stories as Deadfall and the Anthony Award-winning Murder on the Iditarod Trail, Henry follows in the sled and snowshoe tracks of writers like Jack London and Robert W. Service, who realized that Alaska was the last great frontier of adventure. Her characters, like champion sled-dog racer Jessie Arnold, are welcome throwbacks to a simpler period when physical challenge was a healthy way to measure self-esteem.

Jessie is testing herself in the thousand-mile Yukon Quest race, which follows the old mail trail from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, when one of the other racers is kidnapped and held for ransom. The kidnappers insist that only Jessie can deliver the money, and it has to be on the most dangerous leg of the race. Any attempt to involve the police will result in the victim's death. Of course, the worst blizzard of the year blows up just as the race gets to that point, and it goes without saying that Jessie risks herself and her beloved dog team to recover the victim and capture the bad guys. The kidnappers demand that Debbie's frantic stepfather give Jessie the money for delivery during the race, warning them both that Debbie will die if they inform the police. But Jessie secretly notifies her good friend, Inspector Charles Delafosse, before she tackles the race's most demanding leg. In a climactic finish, Jessie almost loses her life when she confronts the criminals on American Summit during a blinding blizzard. Throughout this turmoil, Jessie is also trying to sort out her feelings for her lover, State Trooper Alex Jensen, who's at his father's funeral in Idaho. Henry decorates her novel with glorious evocations of Alaska, believable characters, interesting mushing lore and deft explanations of dogsledding mechanics. But the story suffers from a thin plot that leans on obvious clues and unlikely coincidences. Go to the dogs, sled style with a mystery

Another good sled dog racing tale by ann author who knows her region and makes the background real. If you are a long distance race fan, you won't be able to find many slip-ups in her description of the race from a musher's point of view. The mystery is absorbing and kept me guessing although I am a bigger sled dog than mystery fan. The characters have depth and realism, no stereotypes, and the subtle romance works well.

Another winner from Sue Henry!

I discovered Sue Henry only a few months ago and devoured all her books in a short period of time. I read them in almost one sitting.
Ms. Henry's books concentrate on Alaskan history and an environment few of us can imagine, fabulous characters, and page-turning mystery and excitement. I find that I'm torn between Evelyn Wood-ing it to find out what happens and re-reading passages again and again because of the flow of the words and the descriptive phrases and language.
Jessie Arnold is taking her team on the Yukon Quest this year, instead of the familiar Iditarod. The Yukon Quest is run shortly before the Iditarod and she's decided to try the race from Canada into Fairbanks, Alaska. It's earlier in the year, the trail is rougher and the conditions harsher, but she's eagerly up to the challenge.
Racing, or involved behind-the-scenes, are several friends and acquaintances, legends and loners. It's exciting when you realize that this race, like the Iditarod, honors people who forged this area for the rest of us. A wonderful mix of history and current events, the race gets going and a novice racer is kidnapped and Jessie is singled out by the kidnappers to be the go-between.
Plus, Jessie's got her own personal problems to sort out. Gee, as if running the race for the first time weren't enough to deal with!
I love this book and was truly sorry to get to the end of it. July 5th can't come fast enough for me - that's when Ms. Henry's next book comes out.

Leaves You Wanting More

Ms. Henry is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Beginning with Murder On The Iditarod Trail, her tales of life and death in Alaska have never failed to impress me. In this story, Jessie Arnold is once again testing herself and her dogs on a long and difficult race, the Yukon Quest. The courage and stamina needed for such an endeavor is brought vividly to life by Sue Henry. The mystery, although a good one, is almost secondary to the wonderful descriptions of the snow covered wilds of Alaska. It leaves you wanting more.

On Christmas morning, Nora Winters is found shot to death in her bedroom. The previous evening, she had been talking about how she might take her own life, and since she was shot at very close range, her family initially assumes that she committed suicide. However, the police quickly discover that the gun that killed her is fifteen feet away from where her body was found. With most suicide victims, the gun is found either in their hand or very close to their body, and certainly, if the victim places the gun to the right side of their head, the gun should not end up fifteen feet to the left of their body.
The police are completely baffled by the case because it has all the elements of a classic locked-room murder mystery. The only door to the room has a deadbolt and two sliding steel bolts that are fully engaged; the two windows are securely locked from the inside of the room; and after an extensive and thorough investigation, no hidden panels in the floor, walls, or ceiling can be found. Sure, Nora Winters might have let her killer into her bedroom, but how did he leave? And the gun…the very puzzling position of the gun. Why had it been left behind two books at the far end of the room? What was the point? Since even a cursory examination of Nora Winters’ body showed that she had been shot at close range, why hadn’t the murderer left the gun near her body? If this person had taken the time to think about it, he could have placed the gun in a position where the medical examiner would have ruled her death a suicide. Or maybe the official ruling would have been that it was either a suicide or a murder, but given the fact that the room could not have been left without unbolting the door or unlocking one of the windows, everyone would have signed off on the death as a suicide.
Why would a murderer go to the trouble of mysteriously exiting a room and yet leave a very telltale sign that he had been there? The two things—the placement of the gun and the locked room—don’t go together. If one is going to perform a Houdini-like stunt, then one might as well take advantage of what that stunt offers and leave the gun close to the victim’s body. Why bring attention to oneself when it isn't necessary? Why even leave the gun behind unless you were going to place it next to the victim’s body?
Detective Nick Slater is an experienced investigator who will leave no stone unturned in his search for the killer. He has five suspects—the four children of Nora Winters and Chad Winters, her husband. Gradually, Nick begins to zero in on Chad since he had a strong motive to kill his wife, and of all the suspects, he has the weakest alibi.
Eventually, after the discovery of a key piece of evidence by Nick, Chad is arrested and brought to trial. But what happens after that will prove far more shocking than anything that has gone before...

Good book to read!

I love to read it’s my favorite pastime. I’m an avid fan of murder mystery stories and I quite enjoyed reading this book. The storyline is great, I love the twist I didn’t expect that. All in all this is a good book to read, I really love it. I loved it so much I’ve finished reading it in less than a day.

This was a really brilliant and creative plot line. I was thoroughly entertained, intrigued and engaged the whole read!!! I have read other books by this author and find his work to be most enjoyable. Highly recommend this book. What a great murder mystery and I love a great who done it story! Bravo!

About the Author

Galit Shmueli, PhD, is Distinguished Professor at National Tsing Hua University’s Institute of Service Science. She has designed and instructed data mining courses since 2004 at University of Maryland, Statistics.com, Indian School of Business, and National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Professor Shmueli is known for her research and teaching in business analytics, with a focus on statistical and data mining methods in information systems and healthcare. She has authored over 70 publications including books.

Peter C. Bruce is President and Founder of the Institute for Statistics Education at Statistics.com. He has written multiple journal articles and is the developer of Resampling Stats software. He is the author of Introductory Statistics and Analytics: A Resampling Perspective (Wiley) and co-author of Practical Statistics for Data Scientists: 50 Essential Concepts (O'Reilly)

Inbal Yahav, PhD, is Professor at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Bar-Ilan University, Israel. She teaches courses in social network analysis, advanced research methods, and software quality assurance. Dr. Yahav received her PhD in Operations Research and Data Mining from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Nitin R. Patel, PhD, is Chairman and cofounder of Cytel, Inc., based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Dr. Patel has also served as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the Computer Society of India and was a professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, for 15 years.

Kenneth C. Lichtendahl, Jr., PhD, is Associate Professor at University of Virginia. He is the Eleanor F. and Phillip G. Rust Professor of Business Administration and teaches MBA courses in decision analysis, data analysis and optimization, and managerial quantitative analysis. He also teaches Executive Education courses in strategic analysis and decision-making, and managing the corporate aviation function.
