In his straightforward approach to analysis, Professor Mets begins his discussions of three better-known airpower thinkers of the 1920s—Giulio Douhet, Hugh Trenchard, and Billy Mitchell—with a close examination of their personal backgrounds. He pays particular attention to their professional education and operational flying experience. Mets then lays out the salient elements of each thinker's aerial theories, again paying particular attention to the views of each on the relationship of air warfare to warfare in general, its potential for independent decisiveness, target priorities, the air arm's suitability for organizational independence, command arrangements, and air superiority. With those bodies of theory laid out for easy summation and comparison, Dave then does the same thing for John Warden. His subsequent comparison of the four individuals—three whose context was the dawn of military aviation and one whose context included precision munitions and space surveillance—is revealing. Although Warden's professional education and direct operational experience far outshine those of his predecessors, his core theories reflect as much continuity with their ideas as they reflect differences and accommodations to contemporary technology. These relationships are obscured sometimes by terminology differences, however, and it is one of Professor Mets' more important contributions that he cuts through them to show where Warden draws more from his predecessors than is obvious at first.

Don’t work alone. Create a low-friction environment for rapid feedback loops with other programmers.

Keep the "bus factor" high. (Bus factor = the number of people that would have to get hit by a bus before your project is completely doomed)

Practice humility, respect, and trust. Almost every social conflict can ultimately be traced back to a lack of one or all of these behaviors:
Humility: You’re not the center of the universe. You’re neither omniscient nor infallible. You’re open to self-improvement.
Respect: You genuinely care about the people with whom you work. You treat them as human beings, and appreciate their abilities and accomplishments.
Trust: You believe others are competent and will do the right thing; you’re okay with letting them drive when appropriate.

SET THE STAGE FOR SUCCESS

Build a strong team culture. Base that culture on humility, trust, and respect— and consensus-based decision making.

Write a mission statement. It's just as important to agree on what you're NOT doing as what you are.

Run efficient meetings:

Only invite people who absolutely need to be there.

Have an agenda and distribute it early.

End the meeting early if possible.

Keep the meeting on track.

Try to schedule the meeting near other interrupt points in your day.

Build strong processes and tools around team communication. They're just as important as your software tools.

Never underestimate the bandwidth (and power) of a face-to-face conversation. It trumps all forms of electronic communication.

BE A TRUE LEADER

Remove roadblocks for the team. Strive to be a "servant leader."

Be a leader, not a manager. Managers worry about *how* to get things done, while Leaders worry about *what* things get done, and trust their team to figure out how to do it.

Provide direction and intrinsic motivation. Figure out how much guidance the people on your team need to stay on track—and happy.

MANAGE PROBLEMS WITHOUT DRAMA

• Reject behaviors, not people.
• Guard your team's attention and focus.
• Ignore trolls and stick to facts.
• Don't sacrifice long-term culture for short-term convenience.

MANAGE UP & OUT

Ask for forgiveness, not permission.

If you can't take the path, make the path.

Connect to the right people. Take advantage of the favor economy.

Cut to the chase. Make requests using "3 bullets and a call to action" method.
Example:

TAKE CARE OF YOUR USERS

Listen to your customers. Users want to be heard and acknowledged. Proactive engagement with long-term users has a positive effect on the evolution of your software, and on retaining your customers.

Brian Fitzpatrick leads Google's Data Liberation Front and Transparency Engineering teams and has previously led Google's Project Hosting and Google Affiliate Network teams. He cofounded Google's Chicago engineering office and serves as both thought leader and internal advisor for Google's open data efforts.

Ben Collins-Sussman, one of the founding developers of the Subversion version control system, led Google's Project Hosting team, and now manages the engineering team for the Google Affiliate Network. He cofounded Google's engineering office in Chicago and ported Subversion to Google's Bigtable platform.

Great advice, not easy to apply outside of Silicon Valley

Strengths: Geek "mentality" (hide my code until it's perfect) is summed up well, the team experience and culture are explained throughout with useful metaphors.

Weaknesses: Much advice is based on utopic premises, i.e., oriented towards large open source projects or Google (where candidates with dysfunctional team culture are theoretically weeded out during job interviews). It would be good if there was more realistic advice that applies to the 99% other software companies, e.g., where customers are government, military, etc. and companies are small businesses operating outside of silicon valley without the biggest talent pool.

Enjoyable book that is worth a read

The book was quite an enjoyable read. The mere fact that I finished reading it was a good sign. The book kept me enthralled with its rich anecdotes even though they can be applied to pretty much industry. I really enjoyed the section about dealing with poisonous coworkers as this seems to be a common problem in companies. I also enjoyed learning about the HRT principle and how it can ensure a healthy culture within a software development team.

I would recommend this book to pretty much any one but more so to software developers. It's a good refresher on how to deal with common problems within software teams and how to participate in or lead a solid, lean software development team.

The books had some great points but I often thought that most of the advice and anecdotes were based on common sense. This is why I gave it four stars.

Quick read for creating a cohesive software development team

I found this book enjoyable and appropriate for helping me understand how to improve my "social graces" in my development team environment.

There are a lot of common sense things contained in here, however, because of the personality types that gravitate towards IT/software it sometimes feels like we live in a different world and normal rules don't apply. It commonly feels like if we wait long enough, since most of us are non-confrontational, our social infractions will fix themselves or go away. That's rarely true and can eventually lead to unsatisfying work (and who wants that?) and burnt bridges.

Being a person that loves my career cocoon I've created in development, I found the section that urges the reader to break out towards leadership - a swift kick in the pants. It might take more planning, but I see value in their argument, "Your career is in your hands".

These tips help getting along in any walk of life. I am just glad they came from the perspective of seasoned software pros whom I can empathize with.

Heartwarming, lovely short story

"Wedding Favors" (sequel to "Perfect Day") packs so much emotion, masterfully balanced with tender moments and the occasional bit of humor. What i loved best is how Wyatt's turmoil is soothed and kept in perspective by Graham's love and steadfastness, and, in the very last scene, how past, present, and future are expressed in simple, loving gestures.

I love this book and this series! It's a sweet little novella that is, well, perfection. It's like Mr.Lanyon too a full sized novel and ripped out the unnecessary stuff (fluff, angst, and the annoying sidekicks) leaving/gifting his readers with pure gold.

I really enjoyed watching Wyatt "ruin" the wedding

This is a Josh Lanyon novella/short story. For me, that's enough said but since not everyone has his work as an immediate "1-click", I'll expand my review a wee bit. Now, normally when I come across a story, no matter how short or long, is based on a bride or groom's cold feet, it's not overly appealing to me. I know that "cold feet" is a real thing that every bride or groom deal with and for that reason I find it a bit cliche. Now, having said that, this is a bit different. Yes, Wyatt is having cold feet but in his mind I think it has more to do with his inner fear that Graham is doing the wedding thing simply to please him combined with his paranoia that there will be three people in the marriage because he can't completely let go of the idea that Graham isn't over his deceased lover Jase. I really enjoyed watching Wyatt "ruin" the wedding, work it out in his brain and heart, and then have to "fix" everything-and all under 10000 words. If you liked Perfect Day, you'll love Wedding Favors and if you haven't read it yet, now is a perfect time to check it out.

Like IKEA's mass market-priced beds and dressers, this authorized history of the Swedish furniture company is accessible. Unfortunately, Torekull, a prominent Swedish financial journalist, is all too willing to downplay messy details as he charts the company's evolution from founder Ingvar Kamprad's first sales of cheap fountain pens in 1943 to the present-day behemoth, which boasts 150 stores in 30 countries on four continents with 41,000 employees. Emerging from the interviews with Kamprad and others is a flattering portrait of an entrepreneur with drive and vision who has been responsive to every opportunity to reduce costs. In a demonstration of quick reflexes in the face of changing market conditions, Kamprad sought out sources in Poland and other Eastern European countries as soon as local Swedish suppliers became too expensive. Over time, Kamprad's bold responses to challenges have undeniably been successful. Yet Torekull indicates that IKEA's future may not be as rosy as its past: Kamprad's sons tend to sit in silent obedience when their father is in the room, and new IKEA projects still invariably originate with Kamprad himself. Torekull, an editor and founder of Dagens Industri, an economic newspaper in Sweden, provides a picturesque and insightful view of Swedish entrepreneur Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, who was born in 1926. A descendant of merchants and traders, Kamprad started his own mail-order firm (IKEA) at 17, selling fountain pens, Christmas cards, and other sundries. Years later, he was the first to develop the idea, commercially, of selling furniture unassembled in easily transported flat boxes. Drawing on personal interviews, extensive research, and meetings with Kamprad, the author eloquently describes the company, its founder, and his business philosophy. Kamprad's reputation was tarnished when in 1994 it was discovered that from ages 16 to 25 he had contacts with a pro-Nazi activist, who was favored by his stern German grandmother and German father. Kamprad explains how he was indoctrinated and regrets this time in his life, but he asks, "When is an old man to be forgiven for the sins of his youth?" Misunderstood!

Really, this book describes the IKEA way really good. But after reading others people reviews of this book I can understand how hard it is for non-swedes to grasp the real lessons learned in this book. It doesnt make it better that the guy that wrote this book is a quite "boring dude".
The book is well written and researched, all the facts are true and THE MAN HIMSELF Ingvar KAmprad has had a finger with in this book.
AND INGVAR KAMRAD IS IKEA. You cant separate the founder of IKEA from the company itself. Yes, Ingvar has put his soul in to this company and it is this mans thoughts and actions that has made this company to what it is.
At first glanze this book is really boring. But if you give it time, let it melt in and try to see how it was in Sweden for 50 years ago: IF you can put the book in to context you really get a complete and a invaluable picture of THE IKEA WAY.
Without sounding to cooky I just wanna say that this book is right up there with the books about Nordstroms, Jack Welch and etc.
Really, buy this book if you wanna learn lean and mean business the IKEA way. The customers rule....this is the IKEA way...

Progress by Experiment According to Family Principles

If you read many of my reviews, you already know that I seldom rate a book this low. I would normally not finish such a book, and not write a review. However, I felt that this book would attract a lot of readers who, like me, wanted to learn more about the lessons of IKEA's success. What I found instead is one of the most poorly constructed case histories of an interesting company that I can imagine.
The book claims to tell the IKEA story, but really focuses on writing a biography of Ingvar Kamprad, the company's founder. As a biography, the strength of the book is in describing the family and physical environment that were early influences on Kamprad. Past about the first 30 pages, the book doesn't add much. The most interesting parts of the biography come late in the book when Kamprad's early associations with a fascist group are detailed in the context of press reports exposed in the late 1990s. These should have been fully developed early in the book, rather than treated as a later discussion of how to handle bad publicity. Most good biographies teach you something that you need to know. When I was done with this one, I didn't feel like I had learned anything. There probably were lessons there to be drawn out, but the author did not succeed in helping me find them. That meant that I knocked the book down one star.
IKEA has been an interesting international success with an unusual formula. The book assumes a great personal knowledge of that formula. Yet there are very few of the IKEA stores in most countries, so many people who will read this book will lack the experience of knowing about what is being described. Originally written for the Swedish market, that lack of handling the perspective of what the store experience is like limits the book's ability to translate its lessons. I rated the book down one more star for insufficient background early in the book on the reasons why the business works and how it works today. These are dropped in occasionally, so many of them are there by the end. You would then have to read the book a second time to really understand the relevance of the points.
Next, the book attempts to describe the company's success. A lot of time is spent on this, but the author seems to lack the perspective to pick out what is important and what is not. Kamprod is a classic experimenter. If something works well, he does a lot more of it. After a while that pattern becomes something he will not vary from. Since he was not a systemmatic experimenter, it meant that many developments were delayed. On the other hand, he always made it a place where people liked to work so he had someplace to stand on for continuity as the experiments continued. Without the necessary perspective, this is a little like reading 30 annual reports. Unless you have lots of management background, you will have trouble seeing what the important management lessons are in this book.
Basically, Kamprod is an advocate of low-priced distribution of low-cost, mass-produced goods based on high quality designs. His personal values are those of family and treating people with hospitality (like an honored guest). Having started his business from the family farm in Sweden with family and neighbors having been the first customers and employees, you can see the influences quite easily. What is unusual is that his business model developed earlier than that of other furniture merchants. It was reasonably complete by 1960. Only in the last ten years have we seen a reasonably similar store experience in the Boston area.
The best part of the book is that it contains lots of first-person stories from Kamprad. As such, this book will be a valuable source for the first person to write a good book about IKEA as a management case history. I hope that book will soon be written. There must be important insights to be gained about how IKEA developed its business model so many years ahead of others, but I could not figure out what those insights were.
In the meantime, unless you have a compulsive interest in learning more about IKEA today, skip this book.

About the Author
Louise Simonson worked as an editor at Marvel Comics during the late 1970s and early 80s, most notably on Uncanny X-Men which she edited for four years. She then became a successful freelance writer. She has worked for both Marvel and DC Comics writing critically-acclaimed runs on Power Pack, X-Factor, New Mutants and Superman: Man of Steel a title she helped launch and wrote for eight years.

amazing book. great connection to nolan's movies

I won't say a lot but this novel is ten tims better than the animatd film. Not only does it connect and bridge Batman Begins and The Dark Knight properly but it is also its own story much like both awesome films directed by Christopher Nolan.

Most of the main story does take a little time to get to the point but for good reason. The events of Batman Beginsis referenced well though I wish Joker and Harvey Dent would have been mentioned too. Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and Deadshothave great scenes and development. Even The Man in Black has his moments during the first 6 chapters. Over all it is a recommended read for fans of Batman and Nolan's take on Batman.

What can I say. Everything Batman is great!!!. This book has three really detailed stories. They are very compelling. A good read.
