Great review book for microscopic and gross anatomy

This PreTest includes many clinical questions and bridges cell biology, physiology, human anatomy, embryology, and an introduction to pathology. It was very useful during the anatomy courses and helped me to a 244 on USMLE I. I know, there isn't much pure histology on the boards, but this book helped me quickly review the microscopic and gross anatomical structure of the body and prepare for USMLE I. First Aid gave me a list of areas to emphasize, but it has errors and is too lightweight for those students who want to excel and do a first rate residency.

Grade 2–4—The new crescent appears, marking the first day of the month of Ramadan. Yasmeen, a seven-year-old Pakistani-American girl, is confused because "it's only the seventeenth." Her mother explains that the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. At sunset, the family enjoys a special dinner. The following week, her family prepares food to be distributed at a mosque. One night, Yasmeen sees that the moon is full, and realizes that the observance is half over. Other events include a family barbecue and a celebration of the "Night of the Moon" at the community center, where stalls sell clothes, jewelry, toys, snacks, and gifts. Then Ramadan is over, and the next day is Eid. Yasmeen awakes to her brother's greeting of "Eid mubarak," and the children receive gifts of money. Paschkis's beautiful paintings incorporate Islamic tile art, adding to an authentic sense of the culture. Yasmeen, a seven-year-old Pakistani American girl, looks out the window with her mother, watching the moon’s first crescent. Mom explains how in the Islamic calendar the months follow the lunar cycle, and an excited Yasmeen realizes it’s time for Ramadan. In school, she shares with her classmates details of the holiday, such as the fast. At home, she shares meals with family. The holiday moves week by week, until finally the sky is moonless. “The Night of the Moon” means Ramadan is over, and the next day is the holiday of Eid. Khan’s author’s note explains the origins of Ramadan and the reasons for fasting. The book focuses on the celebratory aspects of the holiday rather than the religious underpinnings, more of which could have been included in the text. But the upbeat tone of the writing is matched by Paschkis’ lively, jewel-like art that uses Islamic decorative stylings and has the look of enameled design work. Midnight blues and sea greens frame pictures of Muslims from many cultures and traditions, all sharing sacred days. Grades K-2. --Ilene Cooper

Great book for all!

I purchased this book to read to my 1st grade students during our Holidays Around the World segment. We had several Muslim children in our grade, so we wanted to make sure to include their culture in our studies since the other students were constantly asking questions. This book is beautifully written, and illustrated. Each page is covered with rich, inviting color. The story was easy for every student to understand, and they really enjoyed learning about how other people in the world live and celebrate. I would recommend this book for any curious child, regardless of race or religion.

Love this book!

I have been reading this book to my son since he was 2. He always liked it but now that he is 5 and understands things in more depth, he absolutely loves this. It is a beautiful tale of sighting the Ramadan moon, the holy month of Ramadan and the festival of Eid. I read this to my almost 2 year old daughter, and she identified herself with the main character in the book, even though she doesn't fully grasp the idea of Ramadan yet. I am so happy to have books like this to share with my kids. Hena Khan is one of my favorite authors - she does a great job lightly presenting these topics to young readers.

Wide Variety of Thought

WHO WE ARE provides an interesting overview of many of the popular thoughts on Human Nature. There is a wide range of varying views from a diverse group of people. Much of the book is fairly deep and difficult to comprehend, but such is the case with philosophical thinkers many times. Also, if you are looking for the author to give his definitive opinion, you will have to look elsewhere, as Pojman simply paints a picture of the varying views without tipping his hat as to his own personal beliefs. I believe there could have been a more thorough exploration of the biblical views, too. Overall, it is an informative book from which to learn and from which to grab ahold of for good critical thinking.

This book has a lot of great insight from various perspectives. It's the type of book you are forced to read for school, but find yourself discussing in your personal life or while reading give a few "no they didn't" to.

Arouses and challenges itself and your thoughts. Easiest school book I ever read because I wanted to read the complete book just so I could express my thoughts in class. The book made class discussin very juicey.

This book is great - but my students found that he wrote a bit too generally about the material. They'd like to have had more primary texts. Sometimes I wondered if it wasn't too advanced. It's definitely educational, not entertainment.

A must read for Jimi Hendrix fans.

Steve Roby, a well known Hendrix archivist as collected information on audio, film and video recordings of Hendrix, either in circulation or 'lost'. There is a wealth of info that Hendrix collectors, such as myself, will be able to use for years. Roby also hopes that 'lost' recordings will surface from someone reading his new book.

Excellent balance of facts and history

Admittedly, this book will appeal to the Hendrix-ophile more than the casual reader. However, Roby weaves a good thread of history and minutiae that will capture the interest of the casual Hendrix listener as well. Since the book was published, a lot of the "lost" material has been officially released. However, there is a wealth of video and audio that even the most ardent collectors have not seen or heard. (Experience Hendrix possesses some but not all of this un-bootlegged material and will probably release it in dribs and drabs for the next decade or so, consider this: a large armored truck was used in the 70's to transport all of the hundreds of reels of Hendrix material) Roby does neglect covering the Douglas/Hendrix period with the same level of archivists detail. What about all the sessions set up with Tony Williams, Mother Hen/Dave Holland, the apartment jam w/Miles Davis? There is still much entombed in vaults and will be for decades to come. Roby's book scratches the surface but I think as time passes more and more evidence will confirm the importance of Hendrix to pop music and music in general.

an essential Jimi read

Ever wonder who jammed with who? This book helps you to find out. This book both a comprehensive list of all recordings of Jimi and his band, as well as an intimate look at the lifestyle of one of America's greatest musicians. I skipped over a lot of the lists and dove into the narratives that told stories of Jimi jamming with Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton (Jimi is supposedly the only guitarist to ever play Clapton off-stage), The Who and many other greats. What I enjoyed most about the book was the details about Jimi learning to play the guitar and his first gigs. Jimi is a musician that stayed true to his roots and his own unique style.
I only gave this book 3 stars because, unless you know absolutely nothing about Jimi Hendrix or some of the other musicians in the book, much of what you read you are likely to already know. Redding included many well known anecdotes as filler for his archival list, which is admirably constructed and researched. The only problem is, is that much of what is on the list is unavailable to the public.
Still, if you're a Jimi fan, you have to read it. After all, it's a book about Jimi.

Worth it

So far everything I have learned in class is on point in this book with practice questions and answers to see if I got it right or wrong. This book also explains why it not the answer as well which gives u a better understanding. Talks on ekg, HIPPA, vitals, phlebotomy and sigmond freud. I hope I pass my test and will give update when I do. Worth the money buy it.

I would buy it again!

I ordered the book and the kindle version... I've been a medical assistant for more than 10year. I allowed my certification to expire, so when I wanted to do a job Change I had to recertify.
Both versions helped me, I actually liked the kindle version just due to convenience when carrying it and the book for the pratice test. Its was a great refresher!

FA on steroids!

This book is like FA on steroids!!!! It's a more organized and easier to read (many nice tables-esp. for pharm) version of FA. It have a little more details than FA. This book + FA + perhaps pathoma/Goljan = Ultimate USMLE review. I really wish I had this book back during basic sciences in med school.

smoothest translation of a thorny path

the reader has a basic choice between prose and verse translations of lucretius's poem: i recommend this prose version, or the rouse translation in the loeb classical library, as the best choices. the difficulty with verse translations is that they are forced to become paraphrases or liberal interpretations in order to satisfy the prosody. prose brings out most accurately lucretius's choice of terms, unwinds his obscure expressions and intricate syntax, and reduces the distance between author and reader.

ferguson smith's edition is beautifully conceived, with outline headnotes to each "book" or chapter, an excellent introduction and footnotes, and a clean typeface. the translation tactfully smooths out some of the thorniest lucretian passages, but rises to the poetry of the original through apt and economical turns of phrase. it's a pleasure to read.

lucretius was a roman aristocrat during the reigns of tiberius, caligula and claudius. one should read suetonius or tacitus, and lucian's "alexander the false prophet" from a later era, to grasp the appalling and degrading mixture of tyranny, paranoia, superstition, depravity, rumor and random brutality under which the roman elite lived. tacitus affirms that many prominent men and women from influential families committed suicide rather than cloak their fear in flattery; cults of conjurers and magicians thrived, and the most preposterous rumors or superstitions were believed as fact.

the ambition of lucretius's poem was to remedy that. it is not so much a "scientific" essay as an attempt to use empirical or materialistic explanations of the world as a bulwark against "religion" -- superstition, false gods, belief in magic, fear of death, and anxiety about the future. religion is not attacked because it is false, but because it nurtures fear and ignorance:

"This terror then and darkness of mind must be dispelled not by the rays of the sun and glittering shafts of day, but by the aspect and the law of nature."

the gods are not denied, but described as impassive and remote, too blissful to bother with human affairs; the reader need not fear their meddling or punishment. at the same time, the goddess venus is evoked in the opening lines as a symbol of the world's abundance in beautiful and good things, the blessings that bring us closest to the divine.

in place of ritual and magic, human reason and trust in the fundamentally lawful fabric of the world provide the path to "ataraxia" or robust calm. great stress is put on finding benign or naturalistic explanations for events that might arouse fear. these alternate with passages of sensual, vivid or fanciful poetry that celebrate the beautiful "aspect" of the world -- the starry sky, a calm sea, a verdant landscape, the act of love, a summer "f�te champ�tre", a grazing flock, the peace of philosophy. even the eventual passing of all things, from individual death to the destruction of the earth itself, are cast as part of the natural process of the world, "the way things are."

the claim that lucretius was indifferent to social morality is a bit misplaced: several times he mentions war as the greatest evil, and the poem abruptly ends with a passage deploring the social upheavals caused by an athenian plague, perhaps to prepare the description of a just and peaceful society that was never finished. in any case, lucretius believed that dispelling anxious beliefs was a better way to encourage individual right thinking than was preaching moral codes about right conduct. (when this happened, with epictetus, the moral precepts were presented as a careful student's notes.)

there are many "scientific" howlers and wild conjectures in lucretius, amusing to read today, but there are also many passages where logic, analogy or observation are turned to some astonishingly perceptive insights about the world -- including a concise rebuttal of "intelligent design" in the universe. the remarkable ambition of this poem dispels easy ridicule, and provides a fascinating window into the earliest forms of scientific reasoning. in every line lucretius seeks to replace superstition with reason, and encourage a naturalistic outlook to overcome the depravity of a superstitious spirit.

Excellent, clarified translation makes for enjoyable reading, easily absorbed almost as a fiction novel. Read this after reading "The Swerve" and other excellent books from Amazon on Roman history.

Great prose translation

I wanted to read "On the Nature of Things" but when I tried reading the verse version it felt hopeless. Then I heard about this prose translation, and gave it a shot. It's fantastic. It reads super-clearly, and flows really well. (Don't be put off by the prayer to Venus on the first couple of pages!) Smith's introduction is really good too -- I highly recommend reading it before you read the actual text.

One additional thing: some might claim that reading this work in prose is "cheating." But Lucretius' stated purpose in writing this in verse is to make it an easier, more pleasurable read for the average reader. Thus, given that nowadays we're more used to prose than verse, I think Lucretius would highly approve of us reading a prose translation. The key for Lucretius is that we understand the ideas, however they're presented.

First of all this book has a lot of information, and I used it for a class so I'm sure it conveys most of the information accurately and that a lot of it is useful actually. I'm giving it 2 stars because I think the presentation of the information was that bad in some parts of the book. It's wordy, lengthy and hard to consume. It could have been much more straightforward and concise than it was, but hey it's a text book, right?

If your getting it for a class then you may have to get it anyway. If you are thinking about getting it just to learn the subject, DON'T. There are free online sources, articles, and so forth about this kind of thing on programming blogs and online magazines and so forth. Or perhaps there is a more concise, straightforward book out there that you could buy.

I bought this textbook for a class I'm currently in and while some parts might be interesting, the majority of the text is just expanding on simple concepts, making it really wordy and dry.

One other thing might be worth mentioning. My teacher allows open book quizzes, but it takes a lot of time to flip through 50 page chapters to find one definition. I went back and rented the Kindle edition for this class and it is a life-saver simply because it has a search bar. Keep that in mind if you ever have to buy this book.

Not a helpful book.

I rented this book out for a college course I took and the results at the end of the year were not good. The class was interesting but the book was cryptic and provided very little insight on what it was trying to explain. There are paragraphs full of "fluff" where they could just explain the subject in a few sentences. To top it off, there were very little examples to help. Instructors, avoid this book at all costs for the sanity of your students.
