From the Publisher
Government-owned and government-subsidized firms compete with private firms in a variety of activities but are often endowed with privileges and immunities not enjoyed by their private rivals. Competing with the Government reveals how these privileges give government firms an artificial competitive advantage that fosters a wide range of potentially harmful effects.

Examining a variety of instances in which government and private firms compete—including freight carriage, electric utilities, financial services, and others—the authors raise fundamental questions about the proper relationship between business and government in a market economy and underline the need for significant policy change regarding competition between government and private firms. Drawing from a wealth of case studies, they detail how state-owned enterprises (SOEs) enjoy an array of government-granted privileges and immunities that can be used anticompetitively, revealing why an SOE is more likely to engage in anticompetitive behavior than a privately owned firm—and why anticompetitive behavior by SOEs is likely to be harmful to society. They show how the U.S. Postal Service—as well as postal services abroad—have consistently been guilty of anticompetitive behavior. And they make a strong case that government-sponsored enterprises such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have actually violated the Sherman antitrust act by monopolizing the automated underwriting market. A LIBRARY JOURNAL BEST BOOK SELECTION • A BOOKLIST EDITORS' CHOICE BOOK SELECTION

One doctor's passionate and profound memoir of his experience grappling with race, bias, and the unique health problems of black Americans

When Damon Tweedy begins medical school, he envisions a bright future where his segregated, working-class background will become largely irrelevant. Instead, he finds that he has joined a new world where race is front and center. The recipient of a scholarship designed to increase black student enrollment, Tweedy soon meets a professor who bluntly questions whether he belongs in medical school, a moment that crystallizes the challenges he will face throughout his career. Making matters worse, in lecture after lecture the common refrain for numerous diseases resounds, “More common in blacks than in whites.”

Black Man in a White Coat examines the complex ways in which both black doctors and patients must navigate the difficult and often contradictory terrain of race and medicine. As Tweedy transforms from student to practicing physician, he discovers how often race influences his encounters with patients. Through their stories, he illustrates the complex social, cultural, and economic factors at the root of many health problems in the black community. These issues take on greater meaning when Tweedy is himself diagnosed with a chronic disease far more common among black people. In this powerful, moving, and deeply empathic book, Tweedy explores the challenges confronting black doctors, and the disproportionate health burdens faced by black patients, ultimately seeking a way forward to better treatment and more compassionate care.

Review

“In this fascinating, heartbreaking memoir, Tweedy documents his experiences as an African American doctor in a medical system that can be 'just as sick as its patients.'” ―O, The Oprah Magazine

“Tweedy reveals all you need to know about the Byzantine health care system, wide-ranging disparities that persist and, more important, how we can take control of our well-being...Black Man in a White Coat is certain to garner incredible attention during the literary awards season. It's a book that deserves a very long shelf life.” ―Essence

“In ways wholly individual but similarly intricate, Margo Jefferson, Dr. Damon Tweedy and Ta-Nehisi Coates examine the impact of race on our expectations and experiences. And in doing so, they challenge us to as well.” ―Time

“Riveting.” ―Entertainment Weekly, The Must List

“On one level the book is a straightforward memoir; on another it’s a thoughtful, painfully honest, multi-angled, constant self-interrogation about himself and about the health implications of being black.” ―Sarah Lyall, The New York Times

“[A] heartfelt account... Black Man in a White Coat is a commentary on challenges and lessons [Dr. Tweedy has] encountered as a physician of color, offering first-hand truths about the medical issues and racial divides in health care plaguing our community.” ―Ebony

“Fascinating… What sets this book in motion is Tweedy’s dogged quest to understand how his personal experience relates to the staggering issue of health care inequality. In the process, he shines a light on disparities than can be hard to fathom…. An engaging, introspective memoir that will force readers to contemplate the uncomfortable reality that race impacts every aspect of life, even medicine…. A timely, thought-provoking examination of our heartbreaking health care system.” ―USA Today

“Black Man in a White Coat offers a clear, informative and uncommonly balanced assessment. Tweedy unflinchingly examines historical patterns of racial inequity in health care. But he also brings attention to often-overlooked indicators of progress…. Attentive to the frustrating inequalities rooted in our history, Tweedy’s Black Man in a White Coat is also usefully attuned to the promising prospects ahead.” ―Randall Kennedy, The Washington Post

“While many doctors write books―the Greek physician Ctesias in antiquity, Atul Gawande today―few have concerned themselves with race. Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine is Tweedy’s thoughtful answer to that gap.” ―Newsday

“Tweedy’s vulnerability makes him a vivid and engaging narrator…. [Black Man in a White Coat] makes important contribution to the ongoing debate about health care in America. Tweedy has advanced a much-needed public conversation about racial disparities in medicine which, while less familiar to most Americans than the deaths that inspired the Black Lives Matter movement, continue to cost black lives.” ―The Boston Globe

“A powerful case on how, in the era of Obamacare and the nation’s first black president, race can still determine who gets sick and lives, or dies.” ―Minneapolis Star Tribune

"A revealing, moving, and courageous examination of racism in American health care ...[Tweedy's] willingness to be self-critical as well as his reluctance to be overtly partisan gives Tweedy’s book an evenhandedness that lends its conclusions added weight, even when he wades into partisan waters."―The Daily Beast

“Required reading for African-Americans and health care professionals.” ―Raleigh News & Observer

“Tweedy uses vivid anecdotes to ground his critiques of physician prejudice and health concerns that affect his community… It’s this investment in the personal that makes Black Man in a White Coat especially powerful. Tweedy’s perspective―and his willingness to challenge his own fundamental biases―puts a voice to a social epidemic that demands to be addressed.” ―Maclean's

Fantastic, eye-opening memoir
By Rachel McElhany
Black Man in a White Coat is Damon Tweedy’s memoir of his experience as a black man getting into medical school up through becoming a practicing physician. At the very beginning of medical school, one of his professors mistook him for a maintenance worker even though he was dressed nicely and had been in his class for a month. Tweedy recounts his embarrassment, even though it was the professor who should have been embarrassed. He also talks about the mixed emotions he felt about a form of affirmative action being one of the reasons that he was admitted to Duke medical school.

Once he starts interacting with patients, he has a variety of experiences related to race that make him aware of the issues that both black doctors and black patients face. Some of them aren’t too surprising (although still horrible), like the white patient who didn’t want a black doctor. Some were very surprising to me. For instance, he encountered a black patient who didn’t want a black doctor. Tweedy backs up his personal examples with research that shows whatever issues he encounters exist on a larger scale. They are not isolated incidents experienced only by him.

Tweedy writes about medical information in an accessible manner with a conversational tone. My eyes were opened to race related issues in the medical field that I hadn’t previously considered. This is a great memoir that I highly recommend.

Phenomenal memoir offers much needed perspective on race and medicine.
By Hunter Bennett
Dr. Damon Tweedy's first novel, Black Man in a White Coat, is a fascinating look into the racial and socioeconomic problems that face physicians, medical students, and patients across America. Dr. Tweedy's reflections on how his identity as an African American male affected his training and development as a physician and young man reveal the biases and traditions of medicine and how they can negatively impact those who find themselves categorized as the "other". I highly recommend this book to those interested in the culture of medicine, particularly new medical students interested in issues of representation and social justice.

Dr. Tweedy writes with a strong, balanced, and humble voice. I cannot wait for his next book!

Great discussion of bias in medicine
By Book Lover
I heard Dr Tweedy speak at the Decatur Book Festival in Georgia a few days ago (he said it was his first time speaking at a book fair) and was inspired to buy the book. Part memoir and part discussion of bias in medicine, it is truly an eye-opener (though if you think about it, it should not be) into the way doctors often make snap judgments about their patients. For instance, he found that doctors were quicker to prescribe drugs for their poor black patients, rather than suggest lifestyle changes because they already were assuming that "people like that" wouldn't change their diet or exercise. Dr. Tweedy even found these kinds of biases residing within himself. He also discusses the challenges of our health care system, his own journey through medical school and his own experiences with prejudice, both from patients and other doctors. He also points out that you can't put all the blame on the system and the doctor for your poor health -- people have to take responsibility for their wellbeing too. The book was very well written and I highly recommend it.

Understanding Sabermetrics: An Introduction to the Science of Baseball Statistics, by Gabriel B. Costa, Michael R. Huber and John T. Sacco

Born in the 1970s as a radical challenge to traditional baseball statistics, sabermetrics has developed into a new way of understanding many aspects of the game. Its practitioners have created new statistical tools and revised our old ways of thinking about established measures such as the batting average, tactics such as the sacrifice bunt, and even who among the greats was truly great.

This introduction to the basics of sabermetric analysis explains concepts including normalization, peak versus career performance, linear weights and runs created, as well as popular calculations like OPS (On-Base plus Slugging), WHIP (Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched), PF (Park Factor) and others increasingly used by baseball fans.

Great Moneyball book.
By SophieB.
This is something of a special interest and I could not find books about saber metrics at a Barnes and Noble Superstore. There are a few of these books and this subject isn't for everyone. It is for: People interested in baseball and records and box scores to an unusual degree, math nerds, statistics nerds, people who play FANTASY baseball--anyone overly interested in these subjects or some combination. This series is a good one, it walks you through it. There may be other books on the subject but not many for lay people. You probably have one person in your life who will go nuts for this, while the rest will scratch their heads and wonder what you were thinking. You know who that person is.

This is a small textbook for a university sabermetrics course
By IvanW
This is a small but fairly expensive book. It covers the basics of sabermetrics. The explanations are concise and many worked out examples. I have read a fair amount of original work by Bill James and Pete Palmer among others. So most the material was not new to me. I did learn a few things such as Win Shares and Park Effects. I really like the description of a simple simulation of Joe DiMaggio's consecutive game hitting streak. I noticed a few typographical errors in the calculations that distract from the presentation. I am looking forward to reading the two other books in the series.
