A complete and accessible resource for working with couples and families
Becoming a Family Counselor sets a new standard for family therapy texts. Working from a broad historical orientation, it focuses on the common themes that reappear across various theoretical approaches and connects family practice with individual approaches. Crossing boundaries of generation, gender, race, and culture, this useful introduction presents current thinking related to today's practice issues.
The text begins with an overview of couple and family counseling, emphasizing the diversity and unity in the field. The development of the field is examined, from its roots in the nineteenth century through its identity crisis in the 1980s. Subsequent chapters lay out an integrated approach to contemporary family research, theory, and therapy; core chapters focus on understanding the contributions of behavioral, organizational, narrative, emotional, and spiritual perspectives. The last section of the book offers practical chapters on conducting family therapy in organizational contexts that often define the client in individual terms. Readers are encouraged to balance a change orientation with a respect for continuity and tradition.
Complete with illuminating case studies, self-evaluation exercises, suggestions for independent study, and current ethics codes, Becoming a Family Counselor is a dynamic resource suitable for both students and practicing mental health professionals.

Review
...it is always of benefit when a new book appears which can organize and categorize [the many family therapy] models for beginning therapists, and for those trying to make sense of our eld.
This is such a book. It is admirably well organized and has the virtue of including more recent models....
Anne Rambo, Ph.D. --Journal of Marital and Family Therapy (added by author)
From the Author
I wrote this book after 20 years of teaching family therapy courses and finding that the conventional "historical" texts left my students confused, disoriented, and overwhelmed. Much of what was in those texts was no longer being applied, and they minimized the newer developments in family therapy. I use a postmodern, feminist perspective to reinterpret and reorganize the field according to common themes that appear across models. (added by author)

informative and inspirational
By Bart A. Burger
Clear, intelligently expressed, informative and inspirational.
Coming from a social constructivist approach to couple and family counseling, Thomas Blume's highly readable and at times quite exciting text, "Becoming a Family Counselor" never loses sight of the fact that first and foremost it is a teaching instrument. Blume avoids the temptation of sounding pedantic and authoritarian. The result is a well-balanced discussion of pertinent matters delivered with just the right sense of teacher/student familiarity--a trick not easily accomplished in writing.
The least I can say about this book is that it is a useful learning tool. In truth, I have high praise as a student of couple and family counseling, and a postmodern thinker. Blume manages to bridge the span between the philosophical and the practical in a way that is inclusive and inviting to the reader. One of the great strengths of this text is Blume's inherent sense of when to include further elucidation and/or examples. In this single text one gets both the hands on hows of intervention with outstanding illustrations, as well a clear discussion of the intellectual environments in which these therapies were hatched--for me the most exciting part of the book!
Probably the most telling thing about this book is that each time I sit down to skim a page, I find I am through ten before I know it. I can't think of many textbooks I can say I have enjoyed reading, and none as much as this one--more to the point--I have read few that have left me truly feeling I had both the tools for intervention and the thinking behind it firmly in hand.
I hope to see more from this talented practitioner and author. Sean OTuathal LLPC candidate.

Excellent book for beginning counselors. The author gives great scenarios for the student to understand the concepts in reality.

Thought I was purchasing a workbook
By Pearli
I should have paid closer attention (although I read closely when making purchases and saw that it said nothing about being a TEXTBOOK). Intent was to purchase a "how to guide", not a textbook. I could have obtained one of those from an old college professor. Book was in good condition, but I was not/am not in the mood to read a textbook, felt too much like returning to college. I have way too many books from college, just added it to my collection of school books on my shelf.
I wasted my money.
