Vivian Reeves is a typical teenager ... deeply involved in all things school and friends from sports (fencing, lacrosse, swimming, skiing, soccer, tae kwon do and tennis) to finding herself singing in the R&B school band for a few years and immersed herself in her classes. One of her favorites was a Memoir writing using each letter of the alphabet. Vivian even tried her hand at acting and commercials as many kids dream of doing finally taking a pass when she was told that she should have a nose job. She decided her nose was just fine. Expanding the vision, it transitioned into a portal for teens globally to express what they thought and felt. Her family roots are from Romania; has lived in four states; is a first she generation American; and speaks fluent Romanian, Spanish and English. Vivian represents the Class of 2013 and resides in Colorado with her family and her hamster, Karma. This is her first book.

As an 18 year old, I can say that this book truly captures what life can be like as a teenager, from various social situations to just getting through classes every day. It's a great read and very educational for kids and parents!

Solid Information!

As a middle school teacher, I appreciated the information presented in this book! It is full of useful information about teens -- straight from the source. I really enjoyed hearing directly from teens themselves, rather than piecing together some ideas based on the media and general stereotypes. The writing was direct and to the point, and each chapter was succinct, making the reading experience easy but informative. I think my favorite chapter was Fear Factor because many of us assume we know what is going on in the minds of teenagers, but we certainly don't know everything. Great job Ms. Reeves!

Colonel Philip Meadows Taylor CSI, an Anglo-Indian administrator and novelist, was born in Liverpool, England. At the age of fifteen he was sent out to India to become a clerk to a Bombay merchant. The merchant was in financial difficulties, though. In 1824, Taylor gladly accepted a commission in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad, to which service he remained devotedly attached throughout his long career. He was speedily transferred from military duty to a civil appointment, and in this capacity he acquired knowledge of the languages and the people of southern India which has seldom been equalled.

He studied the laws, geology, and the antiquities of the country, being one of the foremost early experts on megaliths. He was alternately judge, engineer, artist, and man of letters.

He looks at the reasons, such as economic stress, wars, and expansion as the United States looked to the western frontier. A study of how immigration both past and present continues to affect our economy and our culture. Why they came and where they settled, and at times picked up roots and moved to different areas of the country.

The transportation revolution with the advent of the steam engine in the 1800's increased travel by railroad and by ships and made it easier for people to move around both between nations and within them. Immigration to the United States increased with Europe's crop failure, especially when the blight wiped out a third of the potato crop in Ireland. Barone describes how this rapid influx resulted in a greater dispersion of immigrants in the north, the entry point for the majority, and its consequential increase of growth in northern cities over southern ones.

A new wave of immigrants in urban neighborhoods was also a catalyst for violence as different ethnic and political groups attacked each other because of language and custom barriers. Some of these problems can still be found in cities today with continued legal and illegal immigration taking place. At times conditions could rival that of living on the frontier in the west.

Barone looks at how women rights, slavery, and World War II were catalyst for the movement of people. World War II was a major surge as people came from abroad to escape tyranny and internally many migrated north during the war to fill jobs with the mobilization of industry.

Immigration is an important topic especially given today's illegal immigration which has almost become an invasion. Barone writes about Mexican immigrants who have been arriving in vast numbers since the 1980's. In his comparison of previous immigrants he writes "On average they come with lower levels of education and lower skill levels than immigrants from any other country, with illegals probably having even lower levels than legal immigrants" (page 251).

While "Shaping Our Nation" is a book filled with relevant statistical data it is presented in a very understandable way. I think this book is worthy of 5 stars and recommend it for its fascinating topic that can be kept as a reference for those interested in United States History.

A Terse, Compelling Examination of the Demographic and Political Impact of Various Ethnic Groups on American History

Surprisingly terse, but quite expansive in scope, Michael Barone's "Shaping Our Nation: How Surges of Migration Transformed America and Its Politics" is an excellent overview of the ethnic demographic history of the United States from its initial settlements as the "Thirteen Original Colonies" to the present. In separate chapters devoted to the demographic and political impact of the Scotch-Irish (Chapter One), New England Yankees and Southern "Grandees" (Chapter Two), Irish and Germans (Chapter Three), Southern and Central Europeans (Chapter Four), the great Northward migration of Southern Blacks (Chapter Five) and the ongoing immigration by Latinos and Asians (Chapter Six), Barone tells a compelling saga about American history as seen from the demographic and political impact that each of these ethnic groups had on the United States. Relying on economic and political demographic data, Barone notes repeatedly how these ethnic groups have had a substantial impact on the local, state and even, national, politics in the towns and counties they've resided, whether they are first generation immigrants or those whose ancestors immigrated to the United States centuries ago. To his credit Barone has written a compelling saga of migration to - and within - the United States as compelling as anything written by Thomas Sowell.

Especially illuminating for U.S. history and political/social science buffs

To start with, let's say that this is an especially valuable book for college students majoring in the above subjects. These readers are those who can help make a difference in the future of out country.

Michael Baroni's perspective is from the conservative side of the aisle, but on the moderate side. His conclusions are academically sound and aren't to be dismssed, even by those more inclined to the liberal viewpoint. The point the author is strongest on is pinpointing the effect of migration surges through the history of our country.

While I especally suggest this for our future voters and influential citizens now in college, this is most definitely for all of us older folks too. His expertise is especially in demographics and their analysis.

This isn't an easy book to read, but it sure is a rewarding one. If you have even the slightest interest in the history and politics of our country, this book is for you.

Enchanting & Romantic short story...

This short story was originally in Love Stories From Hell, a YA paranormal romance anthology. I loved it then, and I love it now.

Melissa Marr does mildly dark/tragish romance well!

I'd never read a story about selchies (men/women who also turn into seals) but I found this short story to be just as enchanting and romantic as Marr's Fairie Series Wicked Lovely, and I totally wasn't expecting that. Seals, don't sound romantic to me, but Marr does such a good job crafting this short romance that it didn't feel like a love story involving sea-mammals. Okay, so that probably made this story sound really weird, but it's not. It's well written! And it's about a teenage girl who accidentally get's involved with two very different selchie's who are both attractive, but not equally good for her.

If you are a fan of Marr's other young adult works then I am sure you will enjoy this as well. Just remember it is a short story and it is YA. But it's sooo very enjoyable.

Selchie, Selkie, Silkie Oh My!

Awwww! What a sweet story!

Love Struck is where Alana meets a Selchie aka Selkie aka Silkie aka a magical being who shifts from Seal to human. The lore has been that Silkies shed their seal skin to kidnap a lover and takes them back to see with them or binds them and live on land together. Either way it never seems like the ideal love situation, you knowing being forced into a love situation. BUT ANYWAY! Alana accidently steps on Murrin's skin and just like that they are magically bound to one another.

The rest of the story is one where Murrin works on earning Alana's trust, friendship, and love but not without some obstacles. JUST READ TO GET THE DEETS!

I think what I liked most about this story was the message that love does not have to be complicated and that there is no need to self sabotage, making something that is right so wrong. Alana had to learn to allow happiness and love into her life. Love does not have to be complicated... it's not always perfect, more often than not this is the case but it should never be complicated.

At any rate I say read it! This story made me want to read more stories where Silkies were involved. It was a nice change. :-)

Stops just as it's getting good

I did enjoy the read (and I've loved all her other "Wicked Lovely" books), but it was just too short. Just as I felt I was starting to get into the story, it was over and I felt a little cheated (not because of the price. $2 wasn't a bad price at all to pay for this story), mostly because it seemed like there were so many places that the story could go and then BAM! It's over. Not that it isn't worth reading, but it's not very satisfying.

A+ - Best in it's class!

Living in the Village was easy an read and gave me a clear understanding of what I need to do with my finances. The thing is that much of what the author discusses, we already know. It's just common sense. However, reading it and putting these practices to work for you is another story. My husband and I are just starting out and we've decided to use this book as a guide to help us attain our financial goals. I've always been practical when it comes to saving, but there are so many other nuances that I now realize that I've overlooked. This book is right on time especially with the state of the economy. I'm sure I'm not the only person that would like to have more than a few years stashed away for a rainy season. We've been going through a tumultuous storm for the past 3 years and this book can truly help put a lot of people back on track...if you heed to the solutions provided in the book. I felt like I was talking with a financial advisor without the huge fees attached. The testimonies gave me tons of food for thought and inspiration for my life. They made financial literacy real to me. Definitely a great read!

Well, personally being a finance professional myself I usually find myself in the self improvement section at my local borders, B&N, etc....I've read Dave Ramsey, Suzy Orman and a few others...The only thing I have to say about this book is I really enjoyed the ''estimated budget'' section...That was helpful to me and I noticed it is an a lot more helpful than Dave Ramsey ""total money makeover section''....I just wished Mr Mack expanded on that a lot more. I guess you can't always get everything you want.I will say,I found chapter 6 very helpful to me particularly four and five when he went on to talk about the credit cards. I must admit I do have not only my american express , brooks brothers card and Jc Penney. I need to get rid of the ...JCP like YESTERDAY. After reading chapter 7 I noticed one thing that I am a total victim of ....when Mr Mack mentioned '''whichever card you choose do not use for everyday purchases....My weakness is American express...the reward points are like DRUGS. All in all, the book I would give it a B+ only because I really wish he would have expanded a lot more on actually breaking down your spending diary(pg 281)
