Despite historians' interest in cultural representations of the body, we tend to think of human anatomy and physiology as scientific fact, not historical artifact. In this study Barbara Duden asserts that the most basic biological and medical teams that we use to describe our own bodies - male or female, healthy or sick - are indeed cultural constructions. She sets out to cross the traditional boundary between history and nature by gaining access to the inner existence of a group of women who lived in bodies very different from our own. These women were the patients of Johann Storch, a physician who lives and worked in the town of Eisenach, Germany, during the first half of the 18th century. Storch meticulously documented the medical histories of approximately 1800 women of all ages and social stations, often in their own words. This rich and unique record of complaints, symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments reveals an alien understanding of the female body and its function. Physical processes - digestion, menstruation, pregnancy - were not associated with discrete internal organs. Blood ebbed and flowed rather than circulated; pregnancy did not exist until quickening; menses could be discharged in the form of tears. Physical examination was not necessary to medical care, and in many cases the doctor had no direct contact with his patient. Barbara Duden uses his material to reanimates the female body that Johann Storch treated and that his patients inhabited, showing that its structure, function and meaning - and therefore those of our own bodies - belong to history as well as to nature.

A Sweet Reality

Okay. Am I the only one who thought that Jessie's drunk speech at her cousin's baby shower was hilarious? I could not stop laughing! And the whole time I was laughing, I kept thinking, "Oh my God, I'd totally do the same thing!"

Why? Because in the glaring light of everyone's successes, my own inadequacies, failures, and shortcomings are painfully brought to my attention. That's where Jessie was at this point in her life.

She had an okay relationship with a guy who's priority was work. She had a good job at a bakery where the chocolates she specialized in making were appreciated by customers. She had a home that wasn't hers. She had a best friend who was around more than her boyfriend. And she felt stuck in her life while everyone she knew was getting married, having babies, and having a family. It's what she wanted so what was she doing wrong?

To me, it wasn't that she was doing anything wrong. All the pieces were there. It was a matter of determining which pieces mattered more than others. What kicked her into gear was when her boyfriend dumped her after his firm's cocktail party. Honestly, I didn't feel heartbroken over that. I got the sense before that (and not because of the synopsis, lol) that he wasn't it for her. Ms. Charles really made that distance between Quinn and Jessie obvious, and I hoped and prayed that she wouldn't for anything get back together with him. She deserved someone who loved her despite her "bakery social skills".

Nate was an all around great guy. While he tried to keep his love for Jessie under wraps, it'd find ways to show up: driving her home, offering to help get her in shape, be a shoulder to cry on after a breakup. Yes, a friend does those things but a friend who feels more than friendship with you does it without question, without expectation of something in return. That's what Nate did. He loved her in his own quiet way because he knew, for the moment, her affections were for someone else. The breakup provided a way for him to finally show Jessie that all she ever needed was right in front of her.

This was a surprisingly sweet/sensual story. Sex was behind closed doors but their affection for one another was very open. It took time for Jessie to see Nate as more than a friend, but I think it was because she was so focused on winning Quinn back that she couldn't see it. Building up to that point of recognition was worth waiting for I think. Her awareness of Nate as more than a friend grew over time, and made her feelings for him more authentic for me.

I loved that this story wasn't so much about going from friends to lovers but about discovering your worth outside of a relationship and learning to see yourself as special, quirks and all, to the one person who mattered. Jessie didn't need a measuring stick to see how well her life was going compared to others. She was right where she needed to be. Add Nate into the mix and she discover the perfect recipe for living a life that was full beyond measure with room for more love and growth than she ever dreamed possible.

Jessica Mallory only wants three things in life. She wants to lose a few pounds and have her own chocolate shop with a pink polka-dot awning. But, most of all, she wants to be a woman that her boyfriend Quinn can be proud of. Nate Lancaster is a personal trainer with many clients and his best friend is Quinn. Nate wants his own gym and he is desperately in love with Jessie. When Quinn dumps Jessie and tells her she's just not right for him, Jessie devises a self-improvement plan. And she needs Nate's help.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters. I even cried at one point. I will look for more by Natalie Charles.

Friends to Lovers Romance

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.

This was another one of those books where it was difficult for me to nail down just how many stars to give it. There were things I liked about the book, things that had me scratching my head a little, and things I plain didn't care for.

First with what I liked. Nate was extremely likable. He was a bit shy when it came to women, but that only made him more adorable.

When I started the book it was made to sound as if Nate and Jessie only knew each other through the guy Jessie was dating...Quinn. But as the story goes on, you find out that this wasn't the case. That Nate and Jessie were friends, too. It had me scratching my head a little until I finally just went with the new direction for the sake of the story.

Now for what I didn't like. I wasn't crazy about Jessie's character. I didn't hate her, but there were a few times when I wanted to ask if she was really that blind. No guy...no straight guy, at least...that I know would do half the things Nate does for Jessie and not want to be more than friends. Jessie, however, seems oblivious to it over and over again.

The editing is good and the story has a decent flow outside of that little hiccup on the beginning with the relationship set up.

I would recommend this to people who like friends to lovers romances.

i had a really bad time with this book

This book had SO MANY MISTAKES. I would be stuck in a problem for hours because i had no idea how they got the answer, turns out the answer in the back WAS WRONG!. This didnt happen to me just once, it happened to me multiple times, not only were the answers wrong in the back of the book, but the examples they showed you had glitches too. Instead of showing you how to do the problem with actual calculations, they wanted you to you EXCEL!!! i had a really bad time with this book. I do not recommend.

The book is in slightly worse shape then I'd like. One page is almost completely ripped out of the book. There might be more but I haven't made it that far in the book yet.
