About the Author
Janet M. Box-Steffensmeier is Vernal Riffe Professor of Political Science and Professor of Sociology at Ohio State University (courtesy), where she is a University Distinguished Scholar and directs the Program in Statistics and Methodology (PRISM). Box-Steffensmeier served as president of the Midwest Political Science Association and the Political Methodology Society and as treasurer of the American Political Science Association. She has twice received the Gosnell Prize for the best work in political methodology, and she received the Emerging Scholar Award from the Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior Subsection of the American Political Science Association. She was an inaugural Fellow of the Society for Political Methodology. The Box-Steffensmeier Graduate Student Award, given annually by the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), is named after her in recognition of her contributions in political methodology and her support of women in this field.

John R. Freeman is the John Black Johnston Distinguished Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his honors are the Morse-Alumni, All-University, and College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teaching Awards at the University of Minnesota. Freeman is the author of Democracy and Markets: The Politics of Mixed Economies, which won the International Studies Association's Quincy Wright Award, and the coauthor of Three Way Street: Strategic Reciprocity in World Politics. Freeman also edited three volumes of Political Analysis. He has coauthored numerous research articles in academic journals. Many of Freeman's research projects have been supported by the National Science Foundation as well as by the Bank Austria Foundation and the Austrian Ministry of Science.

Matthew P. Hitt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Louisiana State University. His interests include judicial politics, legislative politics, interest groups, the presidency, and quantitative methodology. His research has been published in the American Political Science Review and Presidential Studies Quarterly.

Jon C. W. Pevehouse is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin. His work examines the relationship between domestic and international politics. Pevehouse is the author of Democracy from Above (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and While Dangers Gather (2007). He is the coauthor, with Joshua Goldstein, of International Relations, the leading textbook on international politics. He is the recipient of the Karl Deutch Award, given by the International Studies Association, and has received numerous teaching awards, including the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Wisconsin. Pevehouse is also the editor of the journal International Organization.

Nice text--needs a proofreader

Good intermediate introduction to time-series. Almost all books on this topic are specifically for economics, but these authors bring in political science (voting patterns) and sociological (crime data) models as well as economic, which broadens the usefulness of the text to more disciplines. It is far less intense than Enders (Applied Econometric Time Series), which is far more "mathy." However, this text still requires a lot of math, and the lengthy appendix (to which they continuously refer the reader all the way through the text) is an advanced treatment requiring matrix algebra and higher math). The examples are very helpful, and good writing. However, they could use a better editor, as I found numerous syntax and spelling errors from the very first page, making some sentences difficult to follow. This always makes me suspicious, and as I am not capable of "checking the math," it leaves the reader wondering how much one can trust the proofs and calculations. Along those lines, one specific interpretation error is on p. 50: the AIC and BIC models they claim are the "best" are actually not--this is either another error, or they presume that one should take the absolute value of these to infer better fits, which is incorrect (i.e., they claim the AIC of -193.73 is a better fit than -277.66, which is wrong). There is at least one incorrectly cited equation (p. 60, listed as "equation 2.52, but this is clearly incorrect--possibly it should be 2.55?). Again, it seems to be a really good text, but the 2nd edition needs an alternate proofreader.

I agree - THIS NEEDS BETTER LABELING AT THE LANGUAGE! I didn't read the description because I already knew what the book was about, so I bought it, and to my horror it's in German! There goes 1 credit, spent uselessly. Audible staff, you need to do a better job labeling things! This is very disappointing, upsetting, and frustrating. And to cap it all, all those bad emotions and bad customer experience could have been easily avoided. And I see I'm not the only one, who got trapped, so it's not like we're all idiots. Don't buy if you don't know XML

This book is very well written but you will find it exquisitely frustrating if you are unfamiliar with XML. I am an embedded systems programmer new to web technology but I am pretty familiar with PHP and Javascript. The lack of XML knowledge made this book a total waste of time for me. It is amazing and stupefying why the author would arrogantly presume that his readers would know XML when he is already presuming that they will know HTML. The net effect of this is, for almost EVERY example in the book he uses some XML so if you do not know XML then you will not understand what is going on. My search for a simple and elementary book that basically teaches you how to weave PHP+HTML+AJAX goes on. This is a disease that Application programmers have. They are used to dealing with everything in an abstract manner ALL the time so they totally forget at what level of clarity their readership is. This is one of the reasons that Bruce Eckel's 'Thinking in C++' and 'Thinking in Java' became best sellers. He was able to bring clarity to the object oriented paradigm in a simple manner because he started from scratch. Any author who claims his book is about helping you design web aplications and in the first 5 pages assumes you know XML deserves very little respect if you ask me.

I wish there was more on the capabilities of PHP.

First off I'm fairly new to web programming (Javascript and PHP) but I didn't find much to broaden my knowledge with this book. Ajax Javascript is covered extremely well elsewhere ("Pragmatic Ajax", "Ajax in Action" and "Ajax Design Patterns" for instance) and is PHP programming ("PHP and MySQL Web Development" and "Advanced PHP Programming").
The book is not complete enough to serve as an introduction to Javascript or PHP. It really doesn't seem to cover the issues with distributed asynchronous programming either.
There is a huge need for a book that concentrates on building solid asynchronous servers with PHP. For instance how can state be carried from server call to server call (PHP session management?). What happens if multiple XML requests are sent while a PHP script is running? Can a single instance handle multiple requests without restarting from the beginning? How can a long running PHP program (yes you need to change the server time out) handle streams of data to and from Javascript?
My suggestions for the next edition are:
1) More on server side patterns (PHP) for AJAX
2) Session management
3) remote RPC techniques
4) JSON servers (techniques like phpolait?)
5) Talk through the code examples more.
I found the code in the book to be the hardest to read through and at the same time the most boring of any programming book I've ever read.

A great intro to popular web-based programming tools

A technical book is only useful if it appropriate for your current skills and knowledge. I am a system admin who has written a fair amount of C++ code and lots of Perl and other scripts. I now need to develop a simple web app from scratch, and this book was perfect for me. While I have many issues with the PHP language, the popularity of LAMP solutions makes PHP a necessary evil that will be around for some time.

This book is a great intro to AJAX as well as PHP, XML, CSS and the DOM. The book is laid out and progresses very well, assuming virtually no knowledge in the first three chapters and with many sidebar comments that answer anticipated questions. The code examples are explained well and give you some good, functional examples to play with and learn from.

They also do well by giving brief intros to important concepts such as DOM and CSS, but then provide links to good on-line resources rather than getting bogged down in these details. Why reinvent the wheel? If you start getting lost following the code that introduces one of these new concepts, just stop reading and peruse the sites they reference.

If you truly new to these concepts, I would recommend reading the first 3 chapters closely and not at your computer, except to refer to the websites they mention. Then go back and re-read them while creating and playing with the code they provide. This helped me a great deal.

If you are interested in semi-classical charge and energy transport theory in semiconductors, Seeger is still the best book to learn from. For experimentalists, this book is a boon since many formulaes are given in "reduced" forms - just plug in material constants and get a numerical value.

A lot of detail on the Zero

I’ve log been interested in the Mitsubishi Zero fighter. Numerous books have been written about the plane and said that this was the fighter plane used by Japan throughout the war. What I’ve wondered about was did the plane go through revisions to improve it as did American, British (24 different Marks of the Spitfire), and German planes. Was the 1945 plane identical to the 1941 plane?

This book, as is usual with the books from MMP provided the answer. Yes, the Zero went through several versions. The biggest changes were to incorporate more powerful engines, which required changers to the front of the fuselage. Likewise the armament changed somewhat in a few of the various models. This included going to a 30mm cannon, removing the 7.7mm machine guns, more ammunition storage area, etc.

Another question I had was why did only the wingtips fold on the Zero. Some versions had folding wingtips, some did not. American naval planes had folding wings so more could be stored in the same amount of area. On the Zero only the tips folded, and they were manually folded. This was to enable them to fit on the deck elevator of the Japanese carriers.

As is usual with the MMP books, there are a lot of photographs from World War II, and even more detailed photos taken for the book, usually in color from Zeros on display in various museums around the world. Some of these are in flying condition.

Early Mushroom Yellow Series title

This is one of the first Mushroom Yellow Series titles (No 6103) dating from 2001 when Mushroom Model Publications decided to enter the book market. The Yellow Series had not found its winning format yet. This was still very much a "recognition manual" type of book. Unlike the previous two books on the Bf 109E and G this book seems to hold up rather well over the past decade or so. At least there doesn't appear to be better books that have appeared in the interim as is the case for the Bf 109. I'm not sure whether this is due to linguistics, fluency in German being much more common than fluency in Japanese amongst English language writers, or whether it is due to knowledge of the Zero, even down to the details, being much firmer.

In any event the book is a 6-1/2" x 9-1/2", 96 page, square bound, card cover. The first 34 pages details the differences between the various Zero models via a mostly adequate but minimal text, nicely done line drawings and sketches, and black and white photos the best of which are of captured examples. The rest of the book consists mostly of close up color photographs of preserved examples (or in a few cases replicas) and color profiles.

All seems well done with a few reservations. The statement in the introduction that "The best American fighter at that time, the F4F Wildcat, did not stand a chance against the Zero" is excessive and almost immediately contradicted in a confusing comparison. Translation problems? In an armament list there is listed a 3 20mm and 2 7.7 mm armed A6M5 which is not subsequently detailed. All the color profile of the A6M2 Model 21 show the exhaust port coming through the fourth oil cooler flap whereas we were previously assured that the change to it coming through the fifth flap was made during the Model 11. The profile artist not getting the memo? Finally, I wish the museum where the various color photos were taken was pointed out on each photo.

Despite these inconsistencies I rate this book four stars because detailed monographs on Japanese planes are not plentiful in English. I wouldn't lay out serious coin to get this book but if reasonably priced both the modeler and general enthusiast will find it worthwhile.

Fantastic for aircraft modelers and technical enthusiasts

I have the new 2015 edition. The book is beautifully illustrated and contains photographs of almost every square inch of the aircraft. Aimed at the modeler and technical enthusiast, the design history of the aircraft is covered with a combination of narrative text and extensive photo captions. The book does not cover the operational history of the aircraft so look elsewhere if that is your interest. As a model and miniatures painter I was particularly interested in the research and color photos on the gray-green color of the aircraft during the early war years.

The book I have been looking for!

I've spent a lot of time looking for a performance related book that reflected both real world ideas and understanding with a hint of engineering in the explanations and the Four-Stroke Performance Tuning has met and exceeded what I thought was available. Very straight forward and easily understood concepts are presented for several areas of engine performance ranging to even the most minute details and best of all with real data taken from samples that certainly solidify the points that are being made. Areas of design that I rarely see in more generic articles were discussed with full importance towards the end development of an engine such as exact valve opening geometry, squish zone shaping/location, and things like cold versus hot spark plugs and gaping with specific constraints in place. The reader is addressed as already having a fair amount of knowledge on the subjects and helps get things rolling a lot faster without drawn out simplified breakdowns on engine basics. Overall, the book answered what I really wanted and I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a good real world based book without a lot of the engineering derivations one might see in a hard core engineering setting while being practical and backing up with real numbers. I would also recommend a turbo charging book and possibly a newer ecu/ems tuning for EFI to complement the ideas in Four-Stroke Performance Tuning.

first class work

This new edition once again proves that there are few reasons to go elsewhere for ideas and info on tuning engines, this has it all. I recently asked a group of fellow racers about what had actually worked on their cars compared to what was theoretically best and the over whelming majority had used ideas and data from this book.

The tuners reference standard -even better in its latest edition

Fantastic book. Should be in the library of every engine tuner and race engine developer. This book will save you loads of money, helping you spend money in the right areas and avoid rip-off merchants and trendy go-faster propoganda so often featured in performance modification magazines.

If you are a young person starting out learning about engine modification this book will give you an excellent base, putting "a wise head on young shoulders".

The fact that this book has been engine tuner's standard reference for over 3 decades is testimony to its worth. The best tuning dollar you will ever spend!
